5.0 out of 5 stars All of the rules for the card games you've never even heard of.
(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } I ordered a copy of "Hoyle's Rules of Games" to replace an older edition I had from the 80's. This is certainly a good investment if you want to learn how to play a new card game, or just need to brush up on the rules for all of the varieties of poker. Makes a great gift.
5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome book
This is such an awesome book. The volume of topics it covers is amazing. Games I've often wanted to play, but did not know how.....until now. Great product. Seller recommended.
4.0 out of 5 stars Not the only Hoyle’s, just one of many.
First off this is one of many rule books using the name Hoyle. It’s as good as any of them. It’s your choice based on price, format, writing style. Secondly, who is Dean Hoyle? The original author Edmond Hoyle wrote a treatise on the game of whist. He followed up with similar works on chess and backgammon. After one publishing run, he sold the rights to the book and use of the Hoyle name in the early 1740’s. The name has long since passed into common usage, with different publishers, editors and content. So saying this particular edition is good or bad is like preferring one flavor of ice cream over another. What you like may not appeal to others. This edition doesn’t include rules for more modern versions of some games, so that may be the ultimate deal breaker for some.
5.0 out of 5 stars Such a good game under either name (can't remember the current one
We have an older version and I often refer to it to remind me of rules of games. Sometimes I have found that an older game such as one I played with the grandmother (Spite and Malice) now has a new name and is in box form which I have played with a granddaughter. Such a good game under either name (can't remember the current one, sorry)! When I played with my grandmother, all we needed was a couple decks of cards. Now it comes in a game box and, of course, there is a price tag on it. Still, it is reasonable and I highly recommend it for all ages. Our granddaughter was nine or ten when I introduced it to her and she picked up on it immediately. Note, she is a games enthusiastic.
5.0 out of 5 stars PERFECT FOR YOUR REFERENCE SHELF
If you want to play card games you pick up a deck of Hoyle or Bicycle cards. If you want to learn about card games you go to the expert: HOYLE's RULES OF GAMES BY ALBERT MOREHEAD. I love solitaire! I play every day but I wanted to learn more versions than the standard of Solitaire & Spider so I went to the expert, well the expert is dead, but I went to the next best thing, this book. Not only does it give you instructions on card games but games of the retro group including Cribbage, Chess, etc. Dont miss this great reference book. I even went so far as to purchase the kindle version as well as the paperback. Now I can reference games anywhere any time.
5.0 out of 5 stars Teach your kids to play cards!!
This was my second order for the book "Hoyle's Rules of Games". One for Me because my old one is over 25 years old. One for friends who have recently become Foster Parents of 2 young children (plus some playing cards and kid's games). It is said that playing cards helps develop Math Skills.I taught my grandchildren to play as many card games as I could, I even learned some new ones myself. What a great way to keep them entertained while "baby sitting" !! Now they are all grown up, but we still have POUNCE tournaments. I love to play cards ever since My Grandmother would play 500 Rummy with me.My second order was for Christmas gifts to all those Grandchildren. .
3.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, but Printed Using Crappy Mass-Market Paper
Hoyle's is always good, but I'd hoped for better quality printing (and would have gladly paid for it). It's printed like a dime-store novel, NOT like a reference book, which is what it's supposed to be. It will get yellow and dingy within a few years. Amazingly, the dominoes section does not include the extremely popular "Mexican Train," which I have been playing since the early 1990s. This edition is from 2001.
5.0 out of 5 stars Concise Rules
Every card game reviewed with detailed rules. Excellent source book for that buddy who always gets the rules wrong!
Me hubiera gustado que la calidad del papel y de la edición fuera mejor.
(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } La información es buena, muy bien explicado, de eso no tengo queja.

IN SERIOUS NEED OF A RETHINK...
I'm an author myself, and I hate giving poor reviews, as it sucks to see people pouring cold water over something you laboured hard over and naturally take a pride in. However, honesty is of paramount importance.First, the positive side. The book covers many games, and its overriding strength is that the rules are explained perfectly for both the newbie gamer and the person who is new to one, particular game. The textual quality of the book is fine, and if elucidation was the only criterion I'd give this book six stars out of five. But the book has a huge flaw in my opinion, which detracts from all the good things one can say about it. Let me explain:The book is titled, HOYLE'S RULES OF GAMES, which suggests it is a comprehensive and wide-ranging compendium of games of all kinds. It isn't. A hugely disproportionate amount of space is devoted to card games - which is fine, if you're a card game fanatic. But precious little space is devoted to other passtimes, such as board games. Sure, there are rules for draughts (checkers in the USA) and chess, and a even a detailed section on backgammon, but these and others are simply swamped by a tsunami of text concerning card games. If you aren't a fan of card games - and I'm not - then you're going to have to hope that the game you DO like is "in the other bit", so to speak.Draughts/checkers is my thing, so fortunately there is a pretty good chapter on the history and rules of the English version of the game. What a pity that more time wasn't devoted to some of the myriad other versions, such as Polish, Russian and Lithuanian draughts. The bottom line is that the book is just way too top heavy with card games. The author would have been much better deployed writing, "HOYLE ON CARDS", "HOYLE ON BOARD GAMES" etc., or doubling the size of the book so that other game types could enjoy equal text space.Another oddity is the inclusion of a section on electronic/console/computer games. Its fine as it goes, but just seems odd in a book devoted to other, very traditional passtimes. The structure and content of this volume are in serious need of a rethink. If they do this, and the result matches the quality of the text, I'll give it top marks.
