Handmade Electronic Music: The Art of Hardware Hacking

Description:

Handmade Electronic Music: The Art of Hardware Hacking provides a long-needed, practical, and engaging introduction to the craft of making - as well as creatively cannibalizing - electronic circuits for artistic purposes. With a sense of adventure and no prior knowledge, the reader can subvert the intentions designed into devices such as radios and toys to discover a new sonic world. At a time when computers dominate music production, this book offers a rare glimpse into the core technology of early live electronic music, as well as more recent developments at the hands of emerging artists. In addition to advice on hacking found electronics, the reader learns how to make contact microphones, pickups for electromagnetic fields, oscillators, distortion boxes, and unusual signal processors cheaply and quickly.

This revised and expanded second edition is extensively illustrated and includes a DVD featuring eighty-seven video clips and twenty audio tracks by over one hundred hackers, benders, musicians, artists, and inventors from around the world, as well as thirteen video tutorials demonstrating projects in the book. Further enhancements include additional projects, photographs, diagrams, and illustrations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book Purchase in the Last Year

E.B. · May 29, 2014

It's like this book was written for me. Fun, simple, incredible experiments and ideas for playing around with home-made electronic sounds. I'd spent a year playing with 555-style oscillators from the Forest Mims playbook to make synthesizers; but Forrest has musical circuits as an afterthought for his more practical electronic projects. I was at a complete standstill, full of ideas, but doing them incorrectly and getting nowhere. This book has exactly what I need to go up a few levels. And while it's at it, tons of really fun ideas for the sound devices themselves. Put loose change in a speaker cone, hook it up to a nine volt battery, dangle some leads and see what you get! Who knew? And Nicolas writes pretty funny as well; I'd never seen a resistor/capacitor setup compared to a Monty Python sketch before.I have one complaint about the book. There's too much cool stuff. I finish a chapter, ready to try everything, and then the next chapter has even better ideas. And then I look at all the chapters remaining and wonder where I'll find the time to do it all. I've got an online order for Jameco for which I'm afraid to hit "send" until I re-read it all again. Meanwhile, I've had a blast doing the projects from the first few chapters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the most complete (but comparably non-technical) books ever written on the subject

t. · February 14, 2020

What I love about this book is that it focuses exclusively on what works, without being slowed down by the underlying formulas and electrical processes going on under the hood. You do not need any significant background in circuit theory or engineering to open it up and start a project. Ohms Law isn't referenced until after the first hundred pages, It is at times very hand-wavy about this, but gives you enough information to pursue more technical research if you're so inclined. Much the same way you do not need to understand a recipe at a physics level to successfully cook a delicious meal, you can simply follow the assembly instructions within and get something to make various bleeps, bloops, and drones in record time. It encourages experimentation, peppered throughout with various "rules" of the process which encourage creative applications and hacks while cautioning against common beginner errors (such as installing a battery backwards, or soldering under the influence). This edition also has even more sub-articles and reader submissions included as inspiration, as well as many references to other creative resources and authors.Truly indispensable, you will want to purchase a stack of Post It notes and a highlighter along with this book.If you're interested in a companion read that gets considerably more technical without getting overwhelming, I recommend "The Art of Electronics" by Harowitz & Hill to explain some of the theory underlying the schematics you will encounter.

4.0 out of 5 stars very cool book

a.s.c. · March 21, 2014

being into synthesizers and things that generate noise in general, I am stoked to have this hard copy however the PDF is extremely similar and was umm less a while ago. FYI. This book is definately modernized and more hip than the PDF d/l but a bit pricey if you ask me. BUT: it's for the cause and Nicolas Collins is, to me, most definately a pioneer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely changed my life

This book is absolutely incredible! So simply articulate to such technical things, and such interesting projects! This is just an all around well written project book. It has updated citations to things like what website to get bulk/cheap parts from and examples (on DVD, as well as other references) from many sonic artists who have tampered in related mad sciences. The different projects are diverse and well prepared.. It's just the greatest thing for a beginning sonic/electronics nerd! Can't say enough about how much I've gotten out of this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars kindle version sucks

c.c. · April 23, 2011

The Kindle version of this book is terrible. There are multiple errors in the text and some sentences do not carry over to the next page - they just disappear. There are no extras; the DVD which is much referenced in the text is not available of course, but neither is there a site to view the contents of the DVD. Music and sound samples are not available either. So, in this case one is left with 1/2 a product and even that half is flawed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent for getting started in electronics

E.B.G. · August 22, 2014

I was hoping for a bit more in-depth information on electronics than this book gave. It's a nice "get your feet wet" kind of book, but left me with lots of questions that I think could have been included in the book. The first half of the book wasn't very interesting to me as it talked mostly about circuit bending and hacking already made electronic noise makers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great basics and not-so-basics for musicians

K. · January 11, 2011

As a musician with an interest in bizarre tone generators this seems like a very cool book and includes circuit-bending and circuit-building advice that I've heard many times from my electronically gifted friends. Mainly, however, I am interested in a little DIY money-saving action and this book is great for that. It's explanations of electrical phenomena is simple and easy to understand, and the sections on speakers and microphone building will pay for the cost of this book ten times over.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun read for beginners

Creative Swiss Army knife

S. · August 21, 2014

This book is a fantastic general introduction to the world of experimental electronica, circuit bending and hardware hacking. It would be perfect for art school students, artists and anyone who uses words like 'upcylcling', 'repurposing' and/or 'glitch' who wish to explore their ideas through hacked sound and visuals. It makes few assumptions and takes you through safe working practices, how to solder and a little (necessary) physics (Ohm's law).It introduces basic components and what hardware can be hacked to get them. Pretty much every bit of knowledge and every idea are illustrated with a mini project, experiment, suggestion or example. Those keen to learn about how to make basic analogue synth’s may find they skim up to Part IV (like me). Initially I wondered if this would mean the book would represent poor value-for-money but the ‘Building’ section is explained and illustrated so well that I'm happy to pay the price for this part alone. Thanks to this book I can now look at schematics and (very slowly) decipher what's going on and therefore what parts are likely to yield interesting results from component changes, shorts and feedback. You’re still going to have to put the hours in but this book is an essential Swiss Army knife of ideas that will see you through your first adventures into hacking electronica. My only wish is that there was another section building upon parts IV and VI (waveforms, ADSR etc) but I suspect the author would feel there’s enough information in the book to engage in a creative process to deconstruct existing kit, work it out yourself and maybe come up with something new in the process. An essential go to book for any creative bookshelf.

Inspirierend. Befreiend. Lesen!

A.B. · December 10, 2014

Man kriegt das was man erwartet. Und was anderes dazu. Und noch was. Und noch was. Und noch was. Man wird ermutigt ein Künstler zu sein, oder ein Spielkind, wie man mag. Ich zitiere (aus dem Kopf): "If it sounds good and it doesn't smoke you don't really need to understand it." :)
