Small Garden Style: A Design Guide for Outdoor Rooms and Containers

Description:

A stylishly photographed guide to creating lush, layered, dramatic little gardens no matter the size of your available space--an urban patio, a tiny backyard, or even just a pot by your door.

Petite gardens align with the movement to live smaller and create a life with less stuff and more room for living. But a more eco-friendly and efficient space doesn't have to sacrifice style. In
Small Garden Style, garden designer Isa Hendry Eaton and lifestyle writer Jennifer Blaise Kramer show you how to use good design to create a joyful, elegant, and exciting yet compact outdoor living space for entertaining or relaxing.

A style quiz helps you focus in on your own personal garden style, be it traditional, modern, colorful, eclectic, minimalist, or globally inspired, then utilize every inch of your yard by considering the horizontal, vertical, and overhead spaces. You'll learn how to design stunning planters and container gardens using succulents, grasses, vibrant-colored pots, and more. Hendry Eaton and Blaise Kramer recommend their favorite plants and decor for small gardens, along with lawn alternatives and inspiration for making garden accents such as a fire pit, front door wreath, instant mini orchard, boulder birdbath, patterned vines, perfumed wall, and faux fountain with cascading plants.

However small your garden,
Small Garden Style will transform it into a magical, modern outdoor oasis.

The book is packed with simple and easy to implement ideas for turning the backyard into an oasis for enjoying outdoor time with friends and family. The Californian authors have got me dreaming of the spring thaw here in Minneapolis, as midwesterners are especially motivated to plan our gardens with an eye on making the most of our fair weather months. I so enjoy this book that I am gifting it to several friends as inspiration for the spring and summer, and as an abundant dose of green and liveliness while our gardens are covered in snow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful photos and thoughtful tips for creating lovely (and livable) outdoor spaces!

All future hostess gifts sorted! This book is it. The photos are light, bright, and a feast for the eyes. The garden tips and techniques are accessible and offer major bang for the buck. I love the eco-friendly vibe, and focus on less stuff - more living. Garden Style quickly replaced the pretty cookbook I display (and never use) in my kitchen and a second copy lives on my coffee table. I feel more connected to nature while cooking and lounging (inside) – plus this book I'll actually use!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is PERFECT if you are starting a garden project!!!

W.D. · February 22, 2020

Love this book! I am starting a landscape project and was looking for a book to help me understand where to start and what to do, and this fabulous book appeared in my feed. It arrived and I could not put it down! Read it cover to cover and keep going back to post it photos and ideas. It starts with a design quiz and then moves step by step through all the pieces of the project highlighting various styles. The pictures are stunning and super inspiring! The whole feel of the book is accessible and friendly - it is EXACTLY what I need as I start my project.

3.0 out of 5 stars Succulents are Gorgeous

J. · April 14, 2020

This is a pretty book with examples of beautiful landscape design. There are some good design guidelines that for someone without a design sense will find useful. However, I was disappointed that most of the plants shown and mentioned are succulents, olive and citrus. Almost (about 80%) of the images are primarily succulents. This contributes to how pleasing all the photos are as it’s easy to design with such high style and unique plants - but they are not practical in other climates. This is a great book for Southern California but not Minnesota ( I was surprised to find this out when I thought the author had spent time living in my neighborhood). I actually came back from Santa Barbara last summer trying to figure out how to have an olive tree, if even in a container...searched high and low for even a cut bouquet on my table. So fun to look at but limiting for my purpose. I’m trying to find how to get these styles with plants that work in my zones. So a variety would have been a little more useful. I think a true design book tackles and succeeds at more of a challenge. This is what the average person is usually dealing with.

5.0 out of 5 stars All you need to create your own garden AND gift to friends.

E. · March 28, 2020

So, to say I have a black thumb is an understatement. So when I decided I needed a little green in my cold, still snowy, northern home, I searched and found this guide and have to say it's pure magic. I've also been gifting it to friends and they all love it regardless of their skill level. Wonderful, wonderful book!
