Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The authors--a psychotherapist and a psychologist--have written a book expressly for Latinas, taking as their premise the idea that there is a profound clash between traditional values and culture and the opportunities and expectations Latinas find in the U.S. At the core of the Maria paradox is the concept of marianismo, already defined in academic literature but, according to the authors, made available to the general reader for the first time in this book. Marianismo is for Latinas what machismo is for Latino men, a set of cultural expectations that can define and also limit behavior. Among the "10 commandments" of marianismo are "do not forget a woman's place," "do not forsake tradition," "do not be single, self-supporting, or independent minded," and "do not wish for more in life than being a housewife." Using exercises and case studies, the authors examine the impact of marianismo on mother-daughter relationships, workplace issues, sexual behavior, marriage, and parenting. They then discuss avenues for change. A useful and readable book for most libraries serving Hispanic populations. Mary Ellen Quinn

5.0 out of 5 stars Great therapeutic tool for Clinicians

y. · December 15, 2009

This is an old but classic book regarding the treatment approach for Latina clients in therapeutic settings. Clinicians of all backgrounds should take time to read and digest. Not only is it good in the process of understanding Latina clients but it has worked well with the constructs carried over by Italian, Portuguese and clients from other countries. It is recommended to have a Spanish speaking or a bicultural person nearby in order to discuss some of the words and concepts in italics.Got at least 5 used books as gifts for my colleagues!

I came across this book in my therapist's office. I wanted my own copy and found it hard to find online. I got it from Housing Works through Bolo and it was a great deal for an organization that does great work. I used to live in NYC and popped into Housing Works anytime I had a chance. It's great to find them online also.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soul Saving

L. · August 30, 2000

I am first generation Mexican American and I had been struggling with a lot of the very same issues that the book talks about. It has explained many things to me about the Latino culture that I could not before put into words. It has helped me so very much to first of all, know that I am not alone and am not crazy, and secondly, that there are ways to deal with this conflict of having two cultures in a healthy more productive manner rather than simply becoming enchilada. My friends and I have had very very very lengthy discussions about the subjects of having two cultures, dealing with our moms who were born and raised in the Old World Traditions, experienced suffering and humiliation for not being traditional and particularly the difficulty of finding the 'ideal' man versus getting the 'real' man. This book has put words to my old feelings and I am eternally grateful. It is, by far, one of the most enlightening and soul saving books I have ever read - and I read A LOT!
