Evaluating ADHD in Children and Adolescents: A Comprehensive Diagnostic Screening System: an Adhdology Book

Description:

This book is the ADHD diagnostic guide that assists clinicians to accurately conduct evidence-based ADHD evaluations, as well as identify and better understand the numerous other possible coexisting conditions that may present along with and worsen true ADHD, or cause ADHD-like presentations when ADHD does not exist.
This Book Will Help You:
  • Confidently conduct ADHD evaluations
  • Identify conditions that coexist with, worsen, or mimic ADHD
  • Improve the accuracy of diagnosing ADHD and other conditions
  • Better understand and provide referrals for other suspected conditions
Evaluating ADHD in Children and Adolescents Has Three Parts:
  • Part One presents the 10-Step ADHDology Evaluation Model, which provides the steps to comprehensively evaluate ADHD.
  • Part Two presents numerous medical, sleep, psychological, trauma, neurodevelopmental, sensory processing, and fetal substance exposure conditions. These chapters describe the conditions in detail, how they coexist with or appear similar to ADHD, how to distinguish them from true ADHD, and how mental health clinicians and specialists can further evaluate and treat these disorders.
  • Part Three is composed of the Comprehensive Diagnostic ADHD Screening System (CDASS), a unique approach to improve the accuracy of evaluating ADHD by utilizing checklists to help identify: the risk factors associated with ADHD, the many possible conditions presented in Part 2 that may exist so these can be further considered and evaluated by specialists, and little-known and not typically considered conditions that can cause ADHD-like presentations.
While written mainly for clinicians, parents as well as educators, and interested others will find the text helpful to better understand these complex topics, as well as assist clinicians with the ADHD diagnostic process.

The CDASS checklists for evaluating ADHD are priceless. I will definitely teach my doctoral students in clinical psychology this system, and I will encourage them to use this comprehensive assessment approach in their clinical practice." - Cynthia Lubin Langtiw, Psy.D., Clinical Psychologist; Professor, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology/Chicago Campus; Associate Editor, The Qualitative Report

I can add this to my list of tools when a not-so-simple case which may be ADHD presents itself." - Theresa A. Bell, M.D., Board Certified Psychiatrist

From the Author

As a licensed clinical psychologist, I have evaluated and treated hundreds of children, teens, adults and families with ADHD and other coexisting conditions.  As the director of an accredited doctoral clinical psychology internship program, I trained many doctoral interns to evaluate and treat ADHD.  Over the years I realized that many clinicians do not fully understand how to evaluate and treat ADHD in children and adolescents.  Without the proper foundation of accurate diagnostics to help families understand the challenges and needs of children and teens, families often cannot obtain the right treatment.  But while there are many with true ADHD, there are also many inaccurately diagnosed and improperly treated.  Thus, those with untreated ADHD, and other conditions, often continue to struggle with hardships and confusion.

True ADHD is a neurobiological condition that can significantly impair multiple areas of life.  It is a massive societal problem and all touched by it since about 1 in 10 children and teens and 1 in 20 adults have ADHD.  It is estimated that there are over six million children and teens in the United States with this condition.  ADHD is not easily determined, and accurately diagnosing it can be difficult.  For most, ADHD is not diagnosed with blood tests or brain scans, and relies on the clinician's skills for identification.

Each person is unique.  Some have more straightforward and obvious presentations, while others are complex and confusing.  To make things more complicated, inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity can be caused by a number of medical, sleep, psychological, neurodevelopmental, and sensory processing conditions that can coexist with true ADHD, or cause ADHD-like presentations when ADHD does not exist.  Research has found that up to 80 percent of clinic-referred children and adults with ADHD also have at least one other psychological disorder.  Unfortunately, these other conditions are often not detected at all or until much later in life.  When they are not discovered and remain untreated, children and teens may only partially improve and entire families can continue to suffer.

I know there is a way out by replacing struggles with successes.  I have witnessed the progress and growth from my approaches.  I'm passionate about helping clinicians obtain a better understanding of the ADHD diagnostic process and treatment to transform the lives of entire families.  With the proper foundation of effective diagnostics, children and adolescents can receive the right treatments to change their lives.
Evaluating ADHD helps clinicians to better understand the ADHD evaluation process, provide more effective evaluations, and identify the other possible conditions that may coexist with or cause ADHD-like presentations.  This book provides professionals with these tools for results.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully insightful text to help enlighten college professors

b.t. · May 12, 2020

As a professor in the hospitality field, the majority of my students are young people, in their late teens & early twenties. As they navigate their way through college, these students face tremendous obstacles to their mental health as well as their physical growth. Often it has been perplexing to diagnose their difficulties in the classroom. However, with this text, it is so much easier to identify and better understand what could be going on in their lives. Having wondered many times if ADHD was the factor, I now have a concise, thorough and user friendly tool to help me understand the situation more clearly. The checklists are extremely helpful in defining symptoms. Professor Barbara Bobbi Taylor, M.S.

Combining a comprehensive understanding of theory with years of first-hand therapeutic experience he has innovated a new cutting edge understanding of screening for ADHD and its treatment. I found the book comprehensive, yet very approachable and practical. As an experienced clinician myself I found this is a "must read" whether you are a therapist, struggle with ADHD yourself, or have family members who have it. Highly recommended!

I appreciate this book so much that I actually brought an Amazon link to my pediatrician because he has been a great support to me and yet has a great deal more that he can learn. I am an ADHD advocate and speak with many adults and parents to children with ADHD and often recommend this book as a touch point for understanding the full picture, comorbid diagnoses, and getting to know one’s own personal complex journey with Adhd. Having a guide like this is really helpful and takes out the overwhelming google searches that lack reputable sources. Dr. Carrocia has blown out of the water! Thank you for making this available!
