Hurricane

Description:

When a storm is raging, David and George are glad to be inside the house, snug and safe. In this spectacular picture book by Caldecott Honor recipient David Wisener, a fallen tree becomes the threshold to the limitless voyage of the imagination, which David and George share as only true friends--and brothers--can.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-3?For brothers David and George, the only thing more unforgettable than the gusty storm that assailed their neighborhood for most of one day is the downed giant elm they find the next morning. The formidable tree becomes a vehicle for hours of imaginative play and fanciful excursions. The stuff of boyhood memories.

Review

"Wiesner captures perfectly the aura of a giant storm from a child's perspective. A family weathers a hurricane; the next day, in the post-hurricane yard, the two boys in the family play on a great fallen elm, imagining it to be a jungle, a pirate ship, and a space ship. A handsome book, affording opportunities for sharing fears and dreams of adventure." -- Copyright © 1991 The Horn Book, Inc. All rights reserved.

5.0 out of 5 stars All-time favorite!

We are on the second generation of children who love the beauty of this book! The illustrations are so vivid, a reader can easily fall into the story and use their own imagination along with the main characters! This is one of the books that will be worn thin from reading night after night!

5.0 out of 5 stars Every boy should have this book

T. · September 3, 2014

The book is the our favorite of our 3 year old (and ours!). Beautifully illustrated, and the story is perfect for a young boy. It is actually teaching him to use his imagination - we use the storyline during play and have such a fun time with it. I highly suggest this for a boy (or girl, but its a great brother tale) 2 and over.

Best children's book author. This isn't my favorite book, but it has some of my favorite illustrations (the two brothers in bed showing the whole room around them, so detailed and evocative). My favorite D. Wiesner book is Flotsam. A perfect book with no words! and gorgeous, inventive illustrations that tell a complex story. Tuesday is another favorite.

For me, I have to admit, it's all about the paintings. Gorgeous.I'm a huge fan of this writer/illustrator. Always so imaginative, and the realism of the pictures makes it even more believable. He deserves all of the awards he's won, and more.

5.0 out of 5 stars fascinating!

totally appropriate in a neighborhood hit hard by hurricaine Sandy. It balances reality and fantasy in such a wonderful way. A lesson in weather science, the coziness of home, and the exploration of the imagination.

Leave it to David Wiesner to create such a beautiful story based on a hurricane and a tree that falls during the storm. My kids love this book and could look at the pictures for hours!

Definitely made for older kids between 5-7. I bought this for my 3 year old classroom and though they like the sounds I have to describe what is happening on each page to keep their interest.
