Tiffany's Table Manners for Teenagers

Description:

Here is the perfect little book for anyone—teenage or otherwise—who has ever wanted to master the art of good table manners. Written by Walter Hoving, former chairman of Tiffany's of New York, it is a step-by-step introduction to all the basics, from the moment the meal begins to the time it ends ("Remember that a dinner party is not a funeral, nor has your hostess invited you because she thinks you are in dire need of food. You're there to be entertaining"). In addition to the essentials about silverware, service, and sociability, it includes many of the fine points, too—the correct way to hold a fish fork, how to eat an artichoke properly, and, best of all, how to be a gracious dining companion.

Concise, witty, and illustrated with humor and style by Joe Eula, this classic guide to good table manners has delighted readers of all ages since 1961.

Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

Written by the former chairman of Tiffany's, this is a simplified, illustrated guide to basic table manners for anyone--teenaged or not--who'd like to dine correctly. More than a handbook on which fork to use, this small volume explains how to be graceful and sociable when dining out and at home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Manners are easy to learn

I bought this book for my daughter. The message and illustrations are simply defined and easy to remember. I highly recommend for teens and tweens.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear and practical guide to civilized behavior

There's a trick to this book's success with teenagers. It must be given at the most receptive moment (i.e.during the few seconds when your teen WANTS to know this). I suggest buying the book when your child or grandchild is eight, and keeping it in your purse or briefcase at all times until the right time to give it-- as many years as it takes, even if it's more than a decade. It will be valuable enough for the kid that you'll have no second thoughts about having carried it around.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mostly current for today.

If the reader keeps in mind the context of the day and time of which this was written, these delightful illustrations are a concise and fun way of understanding manners at the table.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good refresher on basic etiquette

H.F. · August 11, 2011

I'm not into being pretentious, but I do want to make sure I don't make any faux pas at nicer establishments or even when dining with friends. This book will remind of you of what to do in confusing or sticky situations. Though intended for teens, I think this book is relevant to old and young alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adorable little book

C. · June 2, 2013

This is a wonderful little book. So simple and easy to read (15 minutes tops). Although it is written for teenagers, the style, the information is not wasted on adults. There were things that I was not sure of or had forgotten, my mother had this formal thing going when we were children and as teenagers and later adults had moved away from, that has this basic reminder of how to do it properly (mom would be pleased). I honestly love this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best

Have indoctrinated kids and grandkids with the wonderful little book. The clever solution to which side to put bread and drink when sitting at a table alone is worth the price! Remember 👌 with the right hand shows the proper side for drink and a "b" formed with the left hand shows where the bread should be placed. Ingenious and a wonderful learning tool for kids (and some adults)!

3.0 out of 5 stars Charmingly out of date - not too helpful

L.r. · August 13, 2013

I bought this book for my teenage niece. The book seemed haphazardly written with a few good pieces of information scattered about, but it was not at all what I expected. It was humorous but dated - discussing various pieces of silver ware such use of a fish fork. I would have liked more clear direct instructions on current etiquette - ex. place setting arranged in order of courses - working from outside in seems to be most popular setting. Would like better illustrations than the cartoonishly hand drawn forks and knives. I liked the info on how to use serving utensils when presented with a serving platter. I liked info on how to close the plate with fork and knife when complete with meal. I was surprised to see it is appropriate to eat asparagus with fingers. Surprised that the cut and switch with knife and fork was inappropriate. I cut with knife in right hand, fork on left, then place knife on plate and switch to use fork in right hand. I turn fork right side up. This was not offered as option. It is a much prettier display of manners and not offered at all as an option. I dislike the european way of holding fork continually in left hand and stabbing down to cut food with fork face down and bringing to mouth face down. I think switching and fork up is more genteel and slows the pace. It just looks better. But alas, I see people eating with fork in left hand face down.

Pequeña joya con tapa dura. Escrito en inglés es una buena manera de que mi hija aprenda inglés y modales a la vez. Con la estética de Tiffany’s es todo un acierto en cuanto a diseño.
