Discovering Wes Moore

Description:

From the governor-elect of Maryland comes a story of two fatherless boys from Baltimore, both named Wes Moore. One is in prison, serving a life sentence for murder. The other is a Rhodes Scholar, an army veteran, and an author whose book is being turned into a movie produced by Oprah Winfrey.

The story of “the other Wes Moore” is one that the author couldn’t get out of his mind, not since he learned that another boy with his name—just two years his senior—grew up in the same Baltimore neighborhood. He wrote that boy—now a man—a letter, not expecting to receive a reply. But a reply came, and a friendship grew, as letters turned into visits and the two men got to know each other. Eventually, that friendship became the inspiration for
Discovering Wes Moore, a moving and cautionary tale examining the factors that contribute to success and failure—and the choices that make all the difference.

Two men. One overcame adversity. The other suffered the indignities of poverty. Their stories are chronicled in
Discovering Wes Moore, a book for young people based on Wes Moore’s bestselling adult memoir, The Other Wes Moore.

Includes an 8-page photo insert.

It was a great story over all. It talked about the struggles of growing up in a poor black neighborhood.

5.0 out of 5 stars Glad I bought - very interesting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good story, quick easy read at late elementary/middle school level

This is an interesting story, very easy read. I read it in one sitting. I was reviewing this for high school students, and the consensus was most people will like the story, the author is very conversational and keeps it very to the point (doesn't go into a ton of emotions and details) which some kids who aren't avid readers will appreciate. If you have a boy or child you can't get them to read, this might be the perfect book. I think it would be perfect for middle school aged kids or certain high school kids. An avid/fast reader will blow through it quickly, but will still probably like the story. It's a true story of two boys named Wes Moore who lived very close to each other in a rough neighborhood but didn't know each other. Both were raised by single mothers and got into trouble. But then their lives took different turns. The author researched the other Wes Moore who was serving a life sentence for murder (not a spoiler, it's on the back cover of the book) and ending up connecting with him. Our biggest critique of this book is it doesn't go into much detail about the other Wes Moore. This is a condensed version of The Other Wes Moore, so maybe that one has more information. I wouldn't have any problem with my middle or high school kids reading this book. It's been a while since I read it, but there is reference to drugs and alcohol and some violence, but nothing very graphic. The theme is about how early decisions can change the course of your life, so a good message.

My rising 8th grader had to read this as part of his summer reading assignment. He completely enjoyed it and it kept his attention. He read it in a couple of sittings.

5.0 out of 5 stars We share similar experiences and has also helped me become a better parent. However

When I was a college intern leading a reading group, it helped me to relate to my students and Wes is a man that is from my neighborhood. The Bronx is where I am from and made Baltimore my home. We share similar experiences and has also helped me become a better parent. However, he is an awesome leader and an exceptional motivator.

Wonderful read and inspiring. Good for many ages.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not very insightful

P. · September 28, 2024

My fourteen year olds were assigned this book for summer reading. I read it too so I could discuss it with them. My boys felt the writing was too simple for their reading level. They are freshmen. I bought The Other Wes Moore so I could read what Discovering Wes Moore was based on. The "adult" book was a bit more complete and complex but still wasn't too insightful about WHY there was this huge difference in the two Wes Moores. The two men were both about the same age, raised in the same city by single mothers, the middle of three children. One ends up a decorated veteran turned Governor of Maryland and the other is serving life in prison for murder. The book speaks of the different outcomes in their lives but doesn't really get into the reason for the dichotomy. How did society, education, personal drive etc. contribute to these men's lives? I think that it was important for my white, middle class Midwestern boys to learn about the lives of people very different from theirs but I am not sure that this is the book is the one to teach it.

As a 12 year old it was important to read that your environment does not define you. I found the book to be inspiring. I acknowledge that although one makes mistakes it takes wisdom to take responsibility and what follows is a call for action. My mother always says "with awareness comes action."I enjoyed the book very much
