"Absorbing. . . [Tonight in Jungleland is] a fascinating portrait of a talented, ambitious and stubborn young man with strong creative instincts - but who needed to get out of his own way to let the genius shine."
—Los Angeles Times
“Carlin revisits those pivotal years [before the release of Born to Run] with a fan’s fervor and a journalist’s attention to detail.... Carlin’s prose heightens the drama of the album’s construction.... Tonight in Jungleland vividly summons the album’s struggle and its spirit.”
—New York Times
"Few writers make the recording and writing process feel as alive as Carlin does, recounting the story behind Born to Run with a deep appreciation for Springsteen's craft and artistry; it's music writing and biography at its finest."
—Seattle Times
"A must-read accompaniment to the biography of a man that many of us have only known to exist in the stratosphere of musical artists. But what makes this book remarkable is what almost wasn't - his most perfect album."
—Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
"What Carlin does here is more than just music journalism. He creates a story, a mood, and triumphs and challenges for its main and supporting characters, almost novelistic in its approach and analysis. So even if you've already spent hundreds of hours with Wendy, Mary, the Magic Rat, Barefoot Girl, Scooter and the Big Man, Terry, and the Duke Street Kings, Tonight in Jungleland is worth another ride out on Highway 9."
—Houston Press
"After two strong but imperfect albums, how did Springsteen's sound grow so quickly? . . . By the end of Tonight In Jungleland, Carlin just might have figured it out."
—AV Club
“A thrilling page-turner, Carlin’s book, which includes new interviews with Springsteen, recounts the minute-by-minute details leading up to and immediately following the album’s release, lingering on the intimate happenings at the recording sessions, Springsteen’s perfectionist struggles, and the grind to craft and record each note and word.”
—Smithsonian Magazine
"Carlin made the most of his remarkable access to Springsteen’s bandmates, producer, agent – and The Boss himself. . . You don’t have to be a Springsteen fan or even a rock music fan to appreciate this book. It reads like a novel, shining a light on the power of authenticity."
—Christian Science Monitor
“Meticulously researched and masterfully composed, Tonight in Jungleland belongs in the top rank of rock history books and deserves to be in every home where Springsteen’s classic sound still drives the playlist.”
—BookPage (starred)
“Bolstered by interviews with Springsteen himself... this book thrives in exploring the hard work that preceded it. An admirably comprehensive study of a masterpiece and its creation.”
—Kirkus Reviews (starred)
“Captivating. . . Carlin takes a fascinating look at the challenges of making an album whose success now seems inevitable, exploring what drives artists to create as well as how their relationship with their work can shift as it becomes part of popular culture. Springsteen fans should snap this up.”
—Publishers Weekly (starred)
“Endlessly entertaining.... A must for Springsteen fans and admirers of the album.”

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating story exceedingly well-told
I thoroughly enjoyed Carlin’s book. I read it in one sitting while sitting on the beach down the Shore (where everything was indeed alright) with my family. Very well-written and briskly paced. Even for us diehard fans who have heard the story of the making of Born to Run multiple times, there was new information and deep dives into people and topics that made it more than worth the purchase price for me. I enjoyed it very much.
5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific book
This is an insightful and informative book that beautifully tells the story of how Springsteen created his masterpiece album, Born to Run. As a songwriter, I found it inspiring. Bruce Springsteen worked incredibly hard to create this album. I enjoyed the book.
4.0 out of 5 stars Greate Listen, not enough new info for diehard Springsteen Fans
My rating may not be fair, it is a 5 star audiobook. The issue is that it is a niche book. Who would read a book JUST about the making of a single record besides "real" Springsteen fans who have read a lot about him.I knew much of the info before, so for me (and others who have read a lot of books about Springsteen) it just did not have enough new info. But really is a great story.Ironically probably the best source on the recording of the album is from The Dave Marsh biography of Bruce (https://www.Bolo.com/Born-Run-Bruce-Springsteen-Story/dp/0385154437/ref=sr_1_1?crid=OMBE11HIBYPX&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.CNZUX9el2fLpwD94qde_Sg.DUZWyADJJw94hIPxffhOVx04nFdLD3eWXjE6-Yo37CE&dib_tag=se&keywords=born+to+run+dave+marsh&qid=1755671867&sprefix=born+to+run+dave+mar%2Caps%2C453&sr=8-1)
5.0 out of 5 stars wonderfully insightful
Well written and terrific. Hard to put down. This is a great record of the making of a great record!
5.0 out of 5 stars Immersive, Insightful, and Pure Rock History
Peter Ames Carlin does it again. Tonight in Jungleland is an excellent account of what was happening with Springsteen, the E Street Band, the Columbia Records execs, and the folks behind the board and in Bruce’s orbit during the making of Born to Run. I’ve read several of Carlin’s other books, and his style is consistently engaging, richly detailed, and always insightful. He has a gift for putting you right in that time and place, making you feel like you’re in the studio or backstage as the story unfolds. If you love Born to Run or Springsteen’s journey, this is a must-read.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great insights
Great insight into the recording of one of the best albums recorded
5.0 out of 5 stars A Strong Stand
Carlin, whose "Bruce" was a better read than Springsteen's autobiography, delivers again with this behind-the-scenes look at an iconic piece of rock music. By digging through video and audio recordings, Carlin literally takes you into the studio with Springsteen and his E Streeters, enabling you to feel Bruce's paranoia and his bandmates' frustrations. There are great stories here told not just by Springsteen, but Jon Landau, an esteemed rock critic who became Bruce's manager; former manager Mike Appel; and mogul Jimmy Iovine, who at the time was nothing more than an assistant engineer. Each song gets its due - turns out Landau played as big a role in writing "Thunder Road" as Springsteen did - and doesn't skimp on detail. A must-read for Springsteen fans.
4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting
Lot’s of musical detail.
Very Happy
Product is as described and delivery was speedy.
Well written and Insightful
Insightful book. Obviously Mr Ames loves his subject. One glaring error though in first dozen pages. Carole King, Gerry Goffin, Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich all worked for Aldon Music and NOT at The Brill Building. Common mistake
