5.0 out of 5 stars The language and the illustrations are really good for school age children

s. · November 6, 2017

This is a classic adaptation for children, loosely based on the King James Bible. The language and the illustrations are really good for school age children. Unfortunately, it has been pulled off the shelves of my public library because it is "too old" and only the newer translations are available. The newer books lack the beauty of language, but I suppose they are more "accessible." What a sad state we are in. I am not a Christian, but I appreciate the language of the King James Bible and its stories. The book by Tomie dePaola is okay, but not as good as this classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars The SPIRIT of the Word of God

M.H. · April 23, 2017

I am a Catholic school teacher of grades K-4 as well as a teacher of Sunday religious education classes. I can tell you after viewing MANY different children's bibles this stands out as one written not just as simplified, shortened versions of Bible stories, but as one in which the author takes the care to imbue the words with the SPIRIT of the story of God's relationship with His people. I have actually referred adults new to reading the Bible to use this as a supplement to a complete bible to help understand the significance of different passages and characters. I recently bought three copies for gifts, and one is for a young adult totally new to reading the bible. No, this is not complete of course- but the living love of God for us all shows through this bible, and I think that's a pretty good place to start.

3.0 out of 5 stars Adds to the Bible to the point of confusion

C.P. · September 2, 2016

I hate to give this three stars because of the care and research that I can tell went into the creation of this Bible, but I have to recommend caution when reading this to your children. The great thing about this Bible is that it adds a lot of detail to give children context for what is going on in the stories. Better yet, the author didn't just use his imagination but did some digging to understand what was actually going on in the cultures at the time. The stories are mostly Biblical accounts but great liberties are taken for the purpose of adding context. For example, the Tower of Babel narrative is longer than the actual brief Biblical account. The story adds a flourish about how men were whipped if they didn't build fast enough and women were beaten if they wanted to stop working to take care of their children. This helps establish what was problematic with the building of the tower in the first place. It then describes how after God stopped them from building, peace reigned once more and the people were happy. This could possibly have been the case, but the Bible doesn't record it. I'm not even sure where it comes from. Scanning through the book I don't think it does this a lot but I did notice it in just the first few chapters.Ultimately, the problem comes down to telling your children that you're reading them "The Bible" and then reading through extra-Biblical additions. They will have no idea which details are in the Bible and which are not and this is likely to prejudice their understanding and cause confusion as they get older.

Loved this book since I was a child

L.Y.W. · August 5, 2017

Loved this book since I was a child. While loving the stories and pictures, this book grew me as a Christian. It is amazing to learn to love a religion completely on your own without any other influence but the story of it. The novel, 'Life of Pi', illustrates this kind of love in a very beautiful and funny way.
