Michelle Newhart works as an expert course designer and applied researcher in her role as an instructional designer at a large two-year college in southern California. An award-winning writer in medical sociology, Dr. Newhart has contributed to more than a dozen nonfiction books, chapters, and articles. She also teaches sociology part-time at multiple colleges in southern California.

Highly recommend this book for an easily digestible guide to social science research methods. The new edition has substantial changes that improve the organization of topics and expand on qualitative methods and contemporary sampling techniques. The new edition also has updated examples that draw from student research and an attractive layout with more graphics and illustrations. After trying several other research methods textbooks over the years, I've found the short, clearly written topics these authors use make the material more accessible and memorable than the long bloated chapters in other books. Students in my research methods and masters thesis seminars consistently report that Understanding Research Methods is easy to read and understand.
