Experiencing Speech: A Skills-Based, Panlingual Approach to Actor Training: A Beginner's Guide to Knight-Thompson Speechwork®

Description:

Experiencing Speech: A Skills-Based, Panlingual Approach to Actor Training is a beginner’s guide to Knight-Thompson Speechwork®, a method that focuses on universal and inclusive speech training for actors from all language, racial, cultural, and gender backgrounds and identities.

This book provides a progression of playful, practical exercises designed to build a truly universal set of speech skills that any actor can use, such as the ability to identify, discern, and execute every sound found in every language on the planet. By observing different types of flow through the vocal tract, vocal tract anatomy, articulator actions, and how these components can be combined, readers will understand and recreate the process by which language is learned. They will then be introduced to the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and will practice using the IPA for narrow transcription of speech sounds. The book also offers both an intellectual and physical understanding of oral posture and how it contributes to vocal characterization and accent work. This approach to speech training is descriptive, giving students a wide and diverse set of speech sounds and skills to utilize for any character in any project, and it establishes a foundation for future accent study and acquisition.

Experiencing Speech: A Skills-Based, Panlingual Approach to Actor Training is an excellent resource for teachers and students of speech and actor training, as well as aspiring actors looking to diversify their speech skills.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing resource - don't spill on it

H.J. · December 3, 2024

A brilliant resource that I cherish as a voice and speech teacher working with actors at the undergraduate college level. However... lord help you if you ever spill water on it. The pages turn into glue and the book is truly unusable going forward. I value this book so much I bought it AGAIN, how's that for a testimonial! I will be storing it as far from my water bottle as possible. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars A great text for Speech work

A thoughtful, thorough, fun, and witty approach to Speech training for actors. I’ve adopted this text in my classrooms and it’s been of great value to me and my students.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful for Students & Teachers, or anyone interested in their speech

M.A. · November 5, 2021

I use this book in the college courses I teach. The exercises bring out my students' joy and curiosity about speech. Playing with Outlandish (gibberish that includes any sound) is a particular favorite of theirs. It also provides a wonderful building block to move from experiential anatomy to understanding the International Phonetic Alphabet. Can't recommend it enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you! We have been waiting for this.

Thank you. This book is everything actors, directors and speakers have been waiting for. Skinner will always be known for her contributions to “ good” speech, but here all speech is good. Even if it falls in between the wide cracks left by Skinner and forerunners and explores areas of sppech and voice where their is no bad speech, just unique. Our idiolects are like fingerprints. No fingerprints are bad.

Just great

So pleased to receive this book today, after I took the Knight Thompson Experiencing Speech course online recently. The content of the book is just fantastic for actors or anyone else who uses their voice a lot, or is simply interested in speech, and I love the layout of the book - particularly the 'End of Module Wrap' sections and the exercises in each chapter.
