I was a little apprehensive about buying this book at first as I thought it might be a repeat of what I had read before on the SS. I have read many accounts of the SS organization, personalities, campaigns etc. but Adrian Weale's book narrates a refreshing new approach to the SS and contained new information and descriptions not read before. I would highly recommend this book to those who study the SS.

So many of 'my people' claim they had no idea. Thats hard to believe. If you were there you were complicit.

The writing is superb and the development of this historical account is unmatched by any other author. As a reader, you are skillfully led through all the critical events that contributed to the evolution of the SS. If you think you have heard it all regarding this maniacal group, think again. This is the penultimate history of the most ruthless band of thugs to have ever worn a military uniform. Adrian Weale is to be commended for this achievement in the writing of World War II military history!

The author does a fine job summarizing the organizations movements and famous members, but at the end of the day the book never really dives all that deep into the actual organization. The summary of their actual training and ideology is rather shallow. Plus, he sums up the aftermath of their fall in ten pages; nine of which are about Himmler.If you have an understanding of the basic outline of the SS and the general timeliness of the second world war, this book is pretty much 75% review.

This is a well written history of the SS and the Nazis prior to WW1. It tells the story of the rise of nazism during the 1920 and '30s and document menus the rise of several of the key players.

Really enjoyed (if that’s the right word for a book about the SS) this book found it informative and feel I’ve learned a lot about this subject and the characters involved in its formation and development.
A good read
This is a much easier read than it’s predecessor by Hohne but just as informative and with the addition of new data. Recommended.
