5.0 out of 5 stars A Mind-Bending Journey into the Dark Heart of Creativity

S.J. · April 2, 2025

This book, The Writer: A Thriller" by James Patterson and JD Barker is a masterclass in psychological suspense that will keep you guessing until the final page. It is sure to hit #1 on the best-seller list.As a writer myself, I found this thriller particularly resonant. The character of Denise absolutely captivated me—she brilliantly embodies the shadow side that lurks within all creative minds. Patterson and Barker have crafted a character who is both terrifying and uncomfortably relatable, forcing us to confront the darker impulses that can fuel artistic expression. The crime narrative itself is expertly constructed, with twists and turns that consistently upend your expectations. Just when you think you've figured out where the story is heading, the authors pull the rug out from under you with shocking revelations that somehow still feel earned rather than contrived. What truly elevates this thriller above others in the genre is its utterly unique conclusion. Without giving anything away (though I'll simply say: pay close attention to the cat!), the ending delivers a satisfaction that's rare in modern thrillers. The authors maintain the mystery of "who's really the criminal?" right up to the end, blurring the lines between victim and perpetrator in ways that will have you questioning everything you've read.Patterson and Barker's collaboration results in prose that's both accessible and richly atmospheric. Their pacing is impeccable—tense when it needs to be, reflective when the story demands breathing room. I read at night in bed, so at times, I had to force myself to put it down!If you enjoy psychological thrillers that delve into the complexities of the creative mind while delivering genuine surprises, "The Writer" should be at the top of your reading list. This is one of those rare books that will have you thinking about it long after you've turned the final page.

I liked this book. A lot of unexpected twists as in almost of James Patterson’s books. But if you’re following his checklist be aware that this is the exact same book as “The writer “.

4.0 out of 5 stars it got me

Enjoyable read, awesome job with characters and the plot was outstanding. I truly thought I had it figured out and knew how it would end, but Mr. Barker and Mr. Patterson pulled a fast one on me and loved it. Worth the read.

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME READ ! BEST ENDING EVER !

THE WRITER (‘25 - 5 STARS) BY JD BARKER & JAMES PATTERSONDESCRIPTION : NYPD Detective Declan Shaw gets a call: How fast can you get to the Beresford building on Central Park West? In the tower apartment, Shaw finds a woman waiting for him. She’s covered in blood. A body is lying dead on the floor of the luxurious living room. Every book in the apartment’s floor-to-ceiling shelves is by the same author: bestselling true-crime writer Denise Morrow.  “This is you?" Shaw asks the woman. "You're a writer?" Only one person knows the ending to this story. Is it the victim or the killer?REVIEW :Previous books by only this author, JD Barker, for me were Behind a Closed Door (‘24 - 3 Stars), A Caller’s Game (‘21 - 5 Stars) and The 4MK Thriller 3-Book Series : The Fourth Monkey (‘17), The Fifth to Die (‘18) and The Sixth Wicked Child (‘19) all 5 STARS.Books written with James Patterson were The Writer (‘25 - 4 Stars), Confessions of the Dead (‘24 - 3 Stars), Death of the Black Widow (‘22 - 2 Stars), The Noise (‘21 - 3 Stars), The Coast-to-Coast Murders (‘20 - 4 Stars). I definitely think Mr. Barker’s own plots/storylines are so much better than the ones he writes with Mr. Patterson. Previous books by James Patterson were the Michael Bennett and Alex Cross Series and, of course, any books written with JD Barker. They’ve all received 4/5 stars. I’ve stopped reading any other James Patterson books since he calls the people who write for him “contributors” and will not call them co-authors. Just irks me.First JD Barker book with Christine Daigle was Heavy are the Stones (Nov ‘24 - 4 Stars).First JD Barker book with E.J. Findorff was We Don’t Talk About Emma (Feb ‘25 - 2 Stars). I won’t read any more books with EJ Findorff.Earned Double Kindle Reward Points with this purchase.I Can feel the build-up of tension that Mr Barker is so good at right away. Interesting plot connecting a past case with a current one. POW ! Watch-out what’s coming ! There was actually two spots in the book, where I actually had to stop reading because I couldn’t believe what I read! Mr Barker made a mystery tale very engrossing with the twists and excitement.BEST ENDING OF A BOOK I’VE EVER READ !!! BRAVO MR BARKER !!!

This is the same exact story that I just began reading again under a different title....The Imperfect Murder....I bought them both....loved the story but not twice....seems a bit deceptive....

Unexpected Ending

C. · June 7, 2025

The plot twisted & turned. It kept me reading until the very end. I was definitely not expecting that ending at all.

Solid read with some good plot twists

D.T.P. · March 21, 2025

While I expected a twist at the end, based on the blurb on the cover, I still enjoyed the ending. It wrapped up a nice reading experience over the whole book, which I enjoyed reading over a two-day period. The characters are interesting and draw you in to the narrative, and the main plot twist about half way through makes you think you've got it all figured out, only to realize there's more twists to come (including the ending). It's well written and an easy read, and I enjoyed this book.

A great book
