5.0 out of 5 stars Very informative and well-written
This was a truly groundbreaking and helpful book. I am a longtime Zen practitioner and have found it to be very helpful but didn't know why. The explanation of the neuroscience of habits and how to change them dovetailed with my teacher's instructions about the importance of feeling physical sensations, and also correlates with a lot of research on recovering from trauma (i.e., Peter Levine's Somatic Experiencing). I also thought the book was very well-written for a general audience as well as one with more experience in neuroscience or psychology.
5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful new approach to meditating
This is simply a wonderful book. At its heart it is a highly practical book that describes a new way of meditating, what the authors call sense foraging. This approach makes meditation easily accessible to everyone, and without spending a great deal of time. The book also describes the research and MRI findings behind this new way of meditating. It reads like a detective story as you follow the authors' search for understanding neurological and MRI scientific results and how they discovered sense foraging. This book will shift your understanding of the brain from a left/right dichotomy to a front/back dichotomy and in the process open up the world of MRI interpretation. You will also learn multiple ways of using your senses to enter the world of meditation and mindfulness. It is the kind of book that can change your life.
4.0 out of 5 stars Better in every sense
This book introduces concept of foraging one as away of discovering senses you have long ignored and also Establish root cause of some of your psychological problems. A useful book in these times of mental health crisis
1.0 out of 5 stars Recycled ideas presented poorly
I expected some new ideas for using sensory inputs strategically to interrupt the default mode network based on the book description. But honestly it was mostly just regular mindfulness techniques that have saturated culture over the past 30 years regurgitated poorly. It would have gotten 2 stars but I had to quit on the last chapter after talk about the paradigm shift of fitness trackers making Americans healthier and our great export of good health by basically inventing exercise and our quality healthcare because doctors now call us clients not patients and how wellness initiatives by employers are because they care about us.
4.0 out of 5 stars Break out of routine through sensory exploration
Clinical psychologist Dr. Zindel Segal and neuroscientist Dr. Norman Farb explain the science of habitual thought and sensory exploration. If you’ve heard the terms “default mode network” and “salience network” but aren’t sure what they mean, these authors do a decent job of explaining how those parts of the brain function. This is more popular science than self help. Some of the text is fairly technical for the average reader, although I think most people could understand and benefit from the suggestions of how to toggle back and forth between perception and conceptual cognition to break out of routine and explore new options. I enjoyed the discussion of various scientific studies. The authors are refreshingly honest about how often study results didn’t match their expectations and their process of discovering what the evidence actually showed. It’s a great example of science in action. The back matter includes acknowledgments, notes, and resources to discover more.I would recommend this primarily for those interested in learning more about how the brain works.I was provided an unproofed ARC through NetGalley that I volunteered to review.
4.0 out of 5 stars Practical strategies to be healthier and happier
Thank @netgalley for the ARC of this book. I was excited to read this book as an occupational therapist with an interest in the sensory system and how it helps us self regulate. This book delves into scientific explanations and research that explain how we can optimize our sensory experiences to help live happier and more present lives. The practical strategies in this book focus on helping you become “unstuck” from monotony and learning how to be mindful, curious, and intentional.
