Towers Falling

Description:

From award-winning author Jewell Parker Rhodes comes a powerful novel set fifteen years after the 9/11 attacks in a classroom of students who cannot remember the event but live through the aftermath of its cultural shift.

When her fifth-grade teacher hints that a series of lessons about home and community will culminate with one big answer about two tall towers once visible outside their classroom window, Dèja can't help but feel confused. She sets off on a journey of discovery, with new friends Ben and Sabeen by her side. But just as she gets closer to answering big questions about who she is, what America means, and how communities can grow (and heal), she uncovers new questions, too. Like, why does Pop get so angry when she brings up anything about the towers?

Award-winning author Jewell Parker Rhodes tells a powerful story about young people who weren't alive to witness this defining moment in history, but begin to realize how much it colors their every day.

Excellent book. Would be a great read aloud for late August/September. Really shows the reader different long term effects of 9/11, helping see situations are more than meets the eye. 5th grade and up to understand and grasp the seriousness of what happened and how real these characters could be. We do a lot to remember 9/11 in my class but still felt 4th graders weren’t quite ready for this.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Read

I purchased this for my 9-year-old daughter (who reads on a middle school level), and wound up reading it myself first. The author does a great job handling the subject, and I loved the varied backgrounds of the central characters. My daughter said the main character wasn't her favorite, and yet this is still one of the books she has re-read numerous times, so she clearly enjoyed the story in it. I'd definitely recommend this book to others.

Absolutely excellent treatment of a difficult topic. The author deals with so many serious questions in this book: why history is important, how poverty hurts on so many levels, how what we don't know can hurt us and others - by using examples from the adolescent protagonist's daily life to make them relevant. I highly recommend this book to every English/History teacher. Jewell Parker Rhodes has a true gift for teaching, writing and relating what adolescents really think and feel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow . . . leaves me thinking . . .even when the book is done.

D.G. · December 18, 2016

Wow . . . I love a book that once I’m done reading, it leaves me thinking about all the connections I am making now that it is over. While the narrator is only in fifth grade, that fact quickly falls away when the teacher explains to the students that they will be working on a new curriculum this year. The story focuses on the relationships of three students and their families. Deja who lives in a homeless shelter, dears anyone to give her a hard time or the other new student in class. She finds herself intrigued by the girl who always has a smile for her. As these students find their “communities” they also learn about 9/11 and how it relates to not only themselves, but all Americans. Charming, thought provoking, a definite keep in my library.

Powerful!

Powerfully written. Excellent for middle school students. Provides lots of information, that students can further investigate. Celebrates difference, and now to forgive.
