5.0 out of 5 stars The most exciting "Debut Novel" to come down the pike for a long time.
Readers will be after this book from the beginning. The pre-publication promotions for this book were so good that readers were unable to get copies unless they knew somebody. This novel was advertised as being the most exciting "Debut Novel" to come down the pike for a long time. This novel opens up in Washington, DC at a very respected consulting firm "The Davies Group" where Mike Ford, a recent graduate of Harvard Law School, has secured a dream job. The 500 in the title refers to the 500 most prominent people (men and women) in the nation's capitol that run things. The author is good at telling the readers about the ins and outs of Washington society with a lot of great imagination and maybe a bit of truth thrown in for good measure. Mike Ford is a hard worker and works just as hard at fitting in with his richer than Midas classmates as he does at learning his profession. Mike's mother has passed on and his father is a convicted felon so Mike has also learned about the seamier side of making a living for example: being able to steal cars and to break into houses without leaving any evidence behind. He becomes a stand out student at Harvard and Henry Davies, head of the Davies Group, hires him to be an associate and Mike, wanting to make a better life for himself accepts the job. The group is paid for by corporations and special interest groups to influence the 500 who are the people who run Washington behind the scenes. Mike is anxious to please Mr. Davies and goes into his job with a vengeance and, sadly the job that Mike is hired to do turns into a corrupt power play with powerful people behind it.This novel is a very well-written story that brings together intrigue and action. It's a first class debut that does remind the reader of John Grisham's The Firm. However, it's not exactly the same. As a matter of fact, in some places it's a better read than The Firm. Maybe it's because it takes place in the seat of power and it's an election year. The story is action-packed, fast-paced and a page turner to read. It's clever and with many of the tales of Washington insiders and will not be able to be put down until the very last page is read.
4.0 out of 5 stars Exhilarating, Engaging, and very Entertaining, Matthew Quirk’s The 500 is a good read!
Book Review - The 500 - Matthew QuirkThe legal thriller “The 500” combines elements of political intrigue and heart-stopping action, and is an explosive debut by author Matthew Quirk. This suspenseful tale reminds me a lot of John Grisham’s “The Firm” and Steve Cavanagh’s Eddie Flynn series. Readers will discover a new kind of ‘legal-eagle’ hero in main character Mike Ford who quickly learns in this story that in Washington DC, the higher the climb, the harder and deadlier the fall! Quirk writes an intriguing narrative about a corrupt and powerful law firm that digs up dirt on ‘the 500’ most influential politicians in DC only to use it against them in the sleazy game of high power politics. Ford, a young newly hired attorney to the shady DC firm, unknowingly gets involved and is forced to revert back to his former street ways in order to survive the unscrupulous dealings with the slimy politicians and shifty lawyers. The storyline makes the reader pay close attention and the conclusion is surprising and totally unexpected. The book is very well written, very coherent, very believable and intense with action. Exhilarating, Engaging, and very Entertaining, I recommend Matthew Quirk’s The 500! It’s a good read!
5.0 out of 5 stars FUN TO READ
Very well developed characters Plot twists and turns enough to stay interesting and somewhat believable. Makes me want to read the follow on novel.
3.0 out of 5 stars Matthew Quirk's lead character Mike Ford leads to a pretty good summer read!
***SPOILER ALERT***Matthew Quirk's Novel "The 500" was a nice and light quick read. I say nice and light primarily because the plot of the book is relatively straightforward and the characters aren't too complicated. The main character is Mike Ford, a man that tries to live an honest life but his criminal past continues to find him. From the very beginning of this book, I found myself rooting for Mike as he tried to live his life by the "straight-and-narrow." He put himself through Harvard and truly worked harder than most people do in a life time. But he quickly comes to realize through his involvement with the Davies Group that this life is filled with crooks and the "straight-and-narrow" simply doesn't get the job done in a town like Washington DC.As the book moves through Ford's life as an associate at the Davies Group, Quirk continues to ask his readers to ponder how to be honest in a city run by crooks? Through characters light Davies, Malcolm, and Cartwright you continue to ask yourself what is truly good versus bad. And as Ford continuously proves, the answer oftentimes is very grey. In the end, when faced with an opportunity to use bad for good, Mike Ford does the RIGHT THING... "I was born crooked, sure, but like my father I was an honest thief."If you are looking for an interesting but far from complicated summer read, Matt Quirk's "The 500" is a novel for you. While you never get complete visibility to whom the 500 most powerful people in DC are, Quick creates enough interesting characters (in particular Mr. Henry Davies) to keep you interested in the book throughout. You never really know how is good and who is bad (in the traditional black and white, good vs. evil sense) and even when the book ends you still find yourself questioning.
Sehr empfehlenswert
Ein spannender, gut geschriebener Roman der mich entfernt an "The Firm" von John Grisham erinnert hat. Dazu ein sympathischer Held und zumindest eine Fortsetzung - ich hoffe auf mehr.
Good Thriller
A good thriller but the writing style is sometimes too loose for my taste, almost as if the author is unable to supply the necessary details to continue the plot.
500
good racy book
A true page turner.
The 500 is an excellent read. The characters are engaging, the plot is fast-paced and the interwoven themes of politics, commerce and crime are fascinating. Recommended.
