The Desiderata of Happiness (Inspirational)

Description:

Desiderata, that world-famous poem that begins, "Go placidly amid the noise and haste", must be one of the best-loved poems in the English language, revered by many as the ideal philosophy of life. Few people realise that it was written, not on a gravestone in an old churchyard, but in 1927, by the Indiana poet Max Ehrmann who died in 1945 and whose work, until the 1960s, was largely forgotten. This beautiful little book brings together more of the writings of this remarkable man, revealing a love of the world and a concern for its social problems that mark him as one of the greatest spokesman of the twentieth century. Ehrmann was not afraid to express his thoughts about the evils and scandals he saw around him, and in his quest for contentment he turned to nature and the eternal passage of the seasons: his philosophical thoughts are a search for social truth and peace.Readers will find in his poems much that has relevance today. Through Ehrmann we are led to look again at our twenty-first century values and to turn for truth and reality to the essence of beauty and goodness that lies all around us, if we can but open our eyes to see

This book, which was very popular when I was in college, (the 70’s), was a pleasant reminder from my youth. My son also found it inspirational so I ordered one for him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice group of uplifting poems of living a good life in today.

A great friend emailed me a copy of the poem Desiderata, that her mom gave her, which I enjoyed thoroughly and created a lot of positive thoughts of being happy each and every day. This is collection from the same gentleman poems, who was a philosopher in Indiana. They all are good short reads that get your mind wandering along a pleasant path. I bought this one to give away to that friend, buying another copy for my book shelf....

In excellent shape for an old book. I have a copy from 1979 that I dearly love.I was lucky to find the same printing! I wanted to send it to a young friendwho writes short essays, and poems. An encouragement to him to continue. It will be a helpful escape for him, he's joined the Army and is off to bootcamp.

This book is a nice collection of other poetry by the author of the Desiderata of Happiness, one of my favorite prose poems/prayers. I enjoy reading that as requently as I can, and the addition of other poetry and thoughts by Max Ehrmann is a welcome addition to evening reflection reading, prayer, and focused thought. The condition of the book is fine, about what I expected when I ordered as the quality was indicated on the product description when I ordered. I am happy to have this as part of my collection and it was very reasonably priced for a used book.
