Two-Spirit People: Native American Gender Identity, Sexuality, and Spirituality

Description:

This landmark book combines the voices of Native Americans and non-Indians, anthropologists and others, in an exploration of gender and sexuality issues as they relate to lesbian, gay, transgendered, and other "marked" Native Americans. Focusing on the concept of two-spirit people--individuals not necessarily gay or lesbian, transvestite or bisexual, but whose behaviors or beliefs may sometimes be interpreted by others as uncharacteristic of their sex--this book is the first to provide an intimate look at how many two-spirit people feel about themselves, how other Native Americans treat them, and how anthropologists and other scholars interpret them and their cultures.

1997 Winner of the Ruth Benedict Prize for an edited book given by the Society of Lesbian and Gay Anthropologists.

I must say this book really open my mind and turned my world upside down and totally open me to a whole new world ,even though this world of Native Americans is very ancient and I found it very healthy and grounded.

5.0 out of 5 stars good read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good read on alternative genders in Indian Country

K. · November 12, 2019

Great book and read regarding two spirits and their roles. Hoping for a volume 2 :)

2.0 out of 5 stars Dense, not terribly relatable.

J. · April 23, 2021

As someone who was searching to feel at home in this book, I was disappointed in the dated nature of it and technical answers. It is thoughtful, but not enough. If you need a book for your thesis? This is probably a good book to look at for a few parts, but I feel like there must be something more personal out there for those of us seeking comfort and relatability in the word “two spirit”. If this book were written now, with so much work done around Nonbinary, and acceptance of non gender conformance, perhaps it would be a better read, but it’s dated(even though it’s not that long ago).

Excellent Academic Book about Two-Spirit Perspectives

P. · June 6, 2013

This is an excellent and informative book that gives context and cultural perspectives from numerous well informed academics and professionals that speak from experience about two-spirit identity, as well as gender and sexuality perspectives. This book is not good for casual reading - it is intense, thought provoking and very academic.I appreciated the explanation in many of the chapters of this book about the importance of cultural context of two-spirit identity, as well as how gender and sexuality have been interpreted from a Western, ethnocentric perspective in much of the research that has been conducted in the past. As someone that is trying to gain a broad perspective on this topic, this book gave numerous insights to the topic, while offering diverse perspectives that were well researched and well thought out.I highly recommend this book to anyone that is seriously interested in learning more about berdache, Two-Spirit identity, as well as gender and sexuality in aboriginal cultures.

Fabulous

I did gender and sexuality studies at Uni this year and got this book for a paper I did. Each chapter is written by diffrent authors. It is academic but its a must read if your interested in exploring gender from a spiritual perspective. Just amazing I love the concept of your gender or sexuality as being a gift or a calling, some come to this through a visionary experience. Or by a deep searching. Equally it deserves 5 stars
