5.0 out of 5 stars Well Organized and Tons of Unique, Fresh Ideas

What a well-organized book, I am so impressed! You can attack this book in whatever order suits you best: Want to see everything that's in one neighborhood? check. Just want to know what food Boston is known for and make sure you don't miss a top eatery? check. Need an idea to pass away a few morning hours and explore a couple of blocks in-depth on foot? check. Love how the book is sectioned off, and will definitely consider this series for future travel.

It wasn’t as helpful as I’d hoped! It’s more kitschy then helpful!

Lots of useful information and detail, easy to read

L. · March 7, 2024

This book is in an attractive small hardback form. Flicking through the pages, which are reasonably thick and have a natural feel, this book certainly seems good quality. Furthermore, the design and typesetting of the pages is really nice—somewhat minimalist and friendly. The book has a significant introductory section. The main writers are introduced, then Boston is, with a good general overview of the city, talking about its characteristics and particularities, as well as its main neighbourhoods. There are a number of maps, which indicate many of the attractions and give the page number to find more detailed coverage of that attraction. This is all very well designed. The bulk then of the book is split into numerous chapters covering various variety of attraction, with titles such as "Eat", "Shop", "Arts & Culture" and "Outdoors". I think it covers more than you could need as a tourist. And of course, as the title of the book suggests, there is a heavy emphasis on attractions that aren't in the slightest touristy but are still worth your time. Each chapter is really just a list of descriptions (descriptions are typically a decent sized paragraph) of attractions, though they are all first subdivided into more specific categories (such as "Eat" being seperated into "Breakfast and Brunch", "Declicious Seafood" etc.) Peppered throughout are a few other types of content, such as quotes from locals, and specific suggestions. In the descriptions and choice of attractions, I would say there's a significant emphasis on both history and importance to the local community, which I think it really nice. At this point I'd just say that they do a really good job of making this book feel unique and provide information that is more meaningful that the average tourist guide book.Towards the end of each chapter is a suggested route, complete with map and list of attractions. These routes are all very reasonable, only covering a small number of the attractions in a localised area, which makes it a lot more likely to be of practical use.Overall, a really useful book, filled with genuinely fasinating nuggets of history and insight into modern Boston, all aimed to make it accessible to a tourist with no prior knowledge of the city.

Great

A compact guide that covers a lot of detail for it's size

J.B.S. · February 14, 2024

This new book is from the ‎DK Eyewitness Travel range and covers “Boston Like a Local: By the People Who Call It Home ” and is one volume from the many in this compact “Like a Local” series by DK Eyewitness. This book offers a potted description of many of Boston's attractions but from the point of view of the locals rather than tourists. The local DK Eyewitness authors for Boston include Cathryn Haight, Meaghan Agnew and Jared Emory Ranahan. There is currently no “Look Inside” feature on Bolo's product page but the images show the format and style of the book's presentation. This book is nicely produced and runs to 192 informative pages - this edition was published by DK Eyewitness on the 5th of October 2023 – so is right up-to-date. Currently just under eleven pounds from Bolo for the Hardcover version – the Kindle edition is about a fiver – this is an interesting book that offers a different view of the city than regular guide books. For what it offers at the price this compact guide to Boston's food, drink, nightlife, shopping and culture is worth five stars for all of those interested in visiting this historic American city.

A locals view of Boston

T. · February 10, 2024

I got the hardcover version of this book. It's a great size measuring 13cm wide x 18cm high, easy for carrying around with you. It has 192 pages. The book is broken into these chapters:- Eat- Drink- Shop- Arts & Culture- Nightlife- OutdoorsAt the beginning of the book there is a good overview of all the different neighbourhoods, with basic maps showing the locations of all the places mentioned in the chapters above. How useful the book will be to you, is based on how many of those chapters you are interested in. As a family, we are going to Boston for 4 days this summer. I have done some research online (lots of information spread about lots of websites/forums, takes ages to research), so I was keen to see if this book would help. I have to say this book had a few nuggets in it, for me, these were: craft breweries (a passion of mine), and a couple of the walking maps. I like the way the authors use What3Words to locate everything mentioned in the book, it has to be the easiest way to find places.I managed to read through the book in an evening (skipping chapters not relevant to me). Will I be taking the book with me to Boston? No, I won't, but that doesn't mean the book doesn't have value. However I'd have liked to see a few more of the obvious tourist places listed, such as the Cheers Bar. But then again, maybe that's what this book is trying to avoid, giving more of a locals approach of what to do and see.Overall, recommended, with a few minor reservations.

No accommodation information, otherwise good guide book

A. · February 12, 2024

Boston Like a LocalBook is compact (19*14cm) but thick covers make it relatively heavy at 300g for the ~190 pages. Clear sections for eating, drinking, shopping, culture, nightlife & outdoors. It is of course for the city in Boston not the town in Lincolnshire.Couple of issues- being written by locals it doesn't cover accommodation, though it does describe different districts and has sectional maps. Does have walks and a couple of pages of advice on getting around- page layout could be better, lots of blank space which could have been used with a larger font
