Basic Vision: An Introduction to Visual Perception

Description:

Basic Vision: An Introduction to Visual Perception demystifies the processes through which we see the world.

Written by three authors with over eighty years of research and undergraduate teaching experience between them, the book leads students step by step through the various elements that come together in our perception of size, color, motion, and three-dimensional space.

It illustrates the intricacy of the visual system, discussing its development during infancy, and revealing how the brain can get it wrong, either as a result of brain damage, through which the network of processes become compromised, or through illusion, where the brain compensates for mixed messages by seeing what it thinks should be there, rather than conveying the reality.

The book also demonstrates the importance of contemporary techniques and methodology, and neuroscience-based techniques in particular, in driving forward our understanding of the visual system.

DISTINCTIVE FEATURES
* Engaging writing style
captures the excitement of recent research

* Engaging boxes take students deeper into the subject, offering further explanations of key concepts

* Full-color artwork conveys important principles in a visually stimulating way

* Companion Website (www.oup.com/uk/orc/bin/9780199572021) includes student resources (weblinks) and instructor resources for registered adopters of the text for students, and resources for registered adopters of the text (downloadable figures from the book, a Test Bank of multiple-choice questions, and a "Journal Club" with questions to lead students through key research articles that relate to topics covered in the book)

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This the best textbook I have come across that dedicates enough time and space to describing the underlying physiology of the visual system and why understanding these neural mechanisms is critical to understanding human visual perception. The 'conversational' style is great for breaking down the barriers between students' apprehensions and the neuroscientific aspects of the field."--Nick Barraclough, University of Hull

"I was very pleased to discover Basic Vision. The style is very engaging, and it covers all the main topics. The explanations are clear and generally well-pitched for undergraduates."--Kielan Yarrow, City University

5.0 out of 5 stars Great textbook!

Great textbook! It takes more of a physiological approach which is refreshing from the other psychology books I've been asked to read. Only downside is there is no accompanying online flashcards or practice quizzes

It's absolutely perfect. It took a little time to get here but other than that, everything about it screams new. Best delivery.

4.0 out of 5 stars and the info is easy to process

The book arrived on time, and really helped with studying, and the info is easy to process.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not funny, very opinionated. Hard to read without feeling annoyed with the authors.

A. · December 3, 2019

This guy is trying to seem funny, but he's just an old guy with corny jokes and a lot of annoying opinions. He spends time making annoying jokes and if I were taking a class with him, I'd have dropped it. Just give the facts, not your political opinions or life opinions, they're not what I need. There are better books out there. I thought this would be good because it seems lighthearted.....seems, but it's like the annoying uncle who tells the same jokes over and over and you wince to get through it. He also doesn't seem to like old folks much and I think if they've made it this far in life, they deserve respect but this guy falls grossly short on that as well. It was a good attempt at trying to be cool and interesting, but he fell flat on his face on both. You need a younger author for those qualities. He might be a hit teaching to senior citizens with his cheesy shtick if he could leave out the disparaging comments about them. Not a high quality choice for a college crowd.

Testo di riferimento sia per apprendere concetti di base, sia per approfondire tutti gli schemi di precezione visiva.

A. · July 8, 2015

A must-read for anyone studying the Human Eye and Visual Perception

R.S. · June 14, 2020

This is a well-written book where the authors explain the concepts in a witty way while still keeping the core concepts simple and clear. The book has many illustrations and colored pictures - almost takes you back to your childhood days. It is a must-read for anyone that is interested in the Human Eye and its wonders!

Best book for non-experts that are interested how and why we see the world

O. · July 24, 2025

Absolutely fantastic book. Contains excellent and deep description which is clear for non-expert and requires no preliminary knowledge. Excellent description of how our visial system works and why it works the way it does, how human eye perceives the objects, colours, motion, faces, more complex objects. Useful for everyone curious about how we see the world. Strongly recommend to everyone for general self-development.

Nice book for a perception course! Perfect for undergrads!

An excellent resource for Visual Optics!

M.H. · December 17, 2022

As a lecturer in Ophthalmic Dispensing and Visual Optics, I would say that this text book is one of the most engaging text books available, covering very interesting areas of visual optics and perceptual science. For students the style of the book is easy to understand and, with a nice blend of science and humour, engaging. Vocational context is maintained throughout the book by continuous use of case-studies and clinical highlights. For teachers, the texr book covers a wide range of topics, from basic visual optics to visual neuropsychology. At the end of each chapter there is also suggestions for written assessments and additional resources which can be used in the delivery of modules. The only drawback with the book is the publication in 2006 means more modern visual science developments will not be covered.
