Experimental Design for the Life Sciences

Description:

The careful design of experiments lies at the core of good research. Experimental Design for the Life Sciences equips you with the skills you need to effectively design experiments, making this essential aspect of the research process readily understandable. It demonstrates how good experimental design relies on clear thinking and biological understanding, not mathematical or statistical complexity.

With a refreshingly approachable and articulate style, the book walks you through the considerations that go into designing an experiment in clear, practical terms. Using examples drawn from across the life sciences - from ecology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, and health sciences - the authors illustrate how these concepts are applied within the broad context of real biological research.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Review from previous edition: "This is an excellent book for learning how to approach the design of experimental and, indeed, observational work. It avoids the usual inclusion of statistical detail that turns many students off while retaining all the key issues that are necessary for planning studies that produce good science. I commend this book to all those who struggle to get students to think seriously about designing good scientific studies." --Higher Education Academy, Bioscience e-Journal, June 2006 "I think it is splendid; it is the sort of short and concise text which students remember for a long time and which they hang on to long after the course is passed." --Bernt Walther, Department of Fisheries and Marine Biology, University of Bergen "A well-presented, clearly argued, concise and witty introduction to one of the most important topics in the life sciences." --Nick Royle, School of Biosciences, Exeter University

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for a necessary but boring subject

O.L. · February 5, 2011

I don't like reading about experimental design, but as a biology grad student and also as a high school science teacher I need to constantly. This book takes a boring subject and presents it in a readable fashion without having to nap or purposely look for distractions. It also has the added benefit of having a chimp on the cover which just adds to its value as a conversation piece. It has an entire chapter on ethics, which is great considering most science books just mention ethics in passing. I would recommend this book to anyone helping students design science fair projects, or to those who forgot how hard it was to come up with their research topics and studies in college.

4.0 out of 5 stars Design is even more important than method.

D. · December 13, 2019

In purchasing this text I intended to revamp and restructure my principles of research course in the undergraduate program at Northern Caribbean University in Jamaica. It was an easy read and many of the illustrations used throughout the book were easy to associate with and to use in classroom discussions. I was able to build on those illustrations examples of my own. It has revolutionized the way I look at the world and my approach to research in the life sciences.

This is a great book, if you are interested in experimental design you should read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars So easy to read.

I purchased this book this summer as a review for myself in experimental design, and I have found it to very useful and easy to read. Definitely this was a good investment, and a book I will return to often.

4.0 out of 5 stars purchased for schooling purposes

This book was purchased for my schooling purposes. Shipped fast and was in great condition. as far as personal enjoyment= naa.. but as far as schooling purpose= EXCELLENT

A reference for experimental design

A complete guide for a very important but often neglected aspect in the biosciences : the experimental design. Really well written.

Sounds cheesy to say, but this book spreads the knowledge in a fun way

E. · January 20, 2016

Wow, what a beautifully written, humorous and interesting book!Considering the topic, I was expecting something much drier- and indeed I have attempted to read much drier books on similar topics. It reads a bit like a philosophical book as well- analysing the logical thought process behind the conception and design of an experiment.I would recommend this book to anyone, to expand your general knowledge and thinking on all things science, and properly appreciate the effort as well as the limitations behind designing an experiment.

Worth buying for your course and beyond

K.M. · July 8, 2012

I found this very informative and well-written .I read it straight through as I wanted an overview of the subject to prepare for a course but you could dip in and out easily; it's very well laid out, with clear headings, subheadings, examples and boxed definitions in the margins. If you're at all awed by the topic of experimental design this book will cut it down to size for you.
