I found many thought provoking and profound insights in this short book that explores the various ways in which Americans have defined the "American Dream" over several centuries. Also a good reminder that we are still defining and pursuing that dream, but getting it right requires work and attention by all.
5.0 out of 5 stars Good Book
We have skimmed through it to see what's ahead of us when we do get a chance to read it, I'm sure that it willbe a great book, once we've finished it.. 3 books to read over the summer take a bit of time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Description of American Dream
Cullen, J. (2003). The American dream: A short history of an idea that shaped a nation. Oxford University Press.Jim Cullen is the author of >20 books. He holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Tufts University and master’s and doctoral degrees in American Studies from Brown.Cullen described five tenets associated with the American Dream including (a) freedoms described in the Declaration of Independence; (b) upward mobility understood in terms of economic and/or social advancement; (c) equality; (d) home ownership; and (e) the quest for personal fulfillment. Some literature suggests that the American Dream is dead citing statistics indicating that people no longer feel as though their children will have a better future. I was drawn to Cullen's work because it provides a brief description of what the phrase American Dream means including some of the challenges associated with it such as race and gender. Cullen asserted that the "American Dream remains a major element of our national identity, and yet national identity is itself marked by a sense of uncertainty." This uncertainty arises in part due to differing definitions and expressions of what the American Dream means individually. This perception when combined with material and social realities reduces individual perceptions that the American Dream is achievable for all. Something he observed: "The foundation of this dream - upward mobility, was a belief that one could realize the fruits of one's aspirations through applied intelligence and effort." While referencing the hope associated with a dream such as this, Cullen stops short of speculating what happens when people realize that their hard work or effort may not translate into the American Dream for them. This might be a good springboard from which to write another book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much food for thought!
This is an intellectual history of an important idea in American life. Cullen is a fine historian whose love for the subject matter shines forth on each page.
4.0 out of 5 stars High level writing.
I was hoping to use this as a reading text for my college-level ESL classes, but it's too obscure for that. But for me, it was interesting.
Tolles Buch!

Bin absolut zufrieden damit und man erfährt nebengleich gleich noch jede Menge über die amerikanische Geschichte. Kann ich nur weiterempfehlen!
A History of the United States through the lense of the American Dream
I really liked reading this book. I teach ethics in college and wanted to get some basic historical background information about the genesis of the American Dream as an ethical framework for how we live on this continent. Cullen gave me valuable insights into the diversity of the Dream, but also into what the varied instances of the Dream share in common. The book is intended for college students and educated laymen, but it is well documented and ends with a huge list of source material that academics will appreciate. Also note that this book is not entirely a factual account : it also reads as an essay of sorts. The author is explicitly looking to the past for guidance in dealing with today’s fractured American political landscape.
Easy to read
Easy to read-great insight and helpful
Well crafted rendition of our national heritage
A marvelous synopsis of the historical tapestry behind the dream. A must read for any undergraduate, postgraduate, or connoisseur of American government/politics.
