The Oxford History of Modern China

Description:

b'excellent' iLSE Review of Books/i/b

bChina is the world's most populous country and newest superpower, whose place on the international stage can only be understood through the lens of its modern history./b

iThe Oxford History of Modern China/i is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand this rising power in what promises to be the 'Chinese century'. Covering the period of dramatic shifts and surprising transformations which comprise China's modern history, the book spans from the founding of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) to the present day. It introduces readers to important but often overlooked events in China's past, such as the bloody Taiping Civil War (1850-1864), and also sheds new light on more familiar landmarks in Chinese history, such as the Opium War (1839-1842), the Boxer Uprising of 1900, the rise to power of the Chinese Communist Party in 1949, the Tiananmen protests and Beijing Massacre of 1989, and China's rise to economic superpower status in the 21st century. A new chapter for this edition brings the story into the era of Xi Jinping.

Reviews:

3.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting but surprisingly poorly written.

It would be foolish to question the credentials of the historians who wrote this book - as far as history is concerned. However, it is quite astonishing to encounter such inelegant and clumsy writing in every chapter of this volume. Indeed, the book is plagued with constant repetitions, and virtually identical sentences and blocks of texts coexisting within the very same paragraphs. I was not expecting Charles Dickens, but it seemed a given that the text would at the very least meet the basic standards of proper writing. After all the name, Oxford is in the title of the book.Since a different author is responsible for each chapter, after being surprised by the poor writing in the first one, I assumed that this was simply an anomaly, and that the rest of the volume would be just fine. However, every single chapter is subject to the same poor quality writing. One would expect that a book published by Oxford University Press would live up to certain very basic standards in terms of quality. Frankly, this is quite perplexing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not quite new.

Text and print are fine; I have yet to read through the book so am unable to review content. The book cover however shipped with minor scratches and sticky stains despite being "new". Overall not a huge issue and does not affect readability.

Ausführliche historische Abhandlungen verschiedener Autoren

B. · March 19, 2024
