I wanted to read something different and I didn't even read the synopsis of this book when I began reading it.I loved it. I learned about philosophers, different events in the world. This was combined with a motivational, heartfelt message about life. It's not a how-to book, but rather you are meant to interpret his message as it favors you. The control bit hit very close to home for a control freak like me.It was an easy read. Definitely easy to pick up and read if you have fine minutes a day.

I didn’t want the book to end! Matt writes about depression the way that depression feels and defines hope as a possible experience for everyone. This book is a comfort for anyone who struggles with depression and anxiety. Please read this book and share it with your friends and family!

3.0 out of 5 stars Started out good.

S.R. · September 14, 2025

A mixed of short antidotes to help you think with a different perspective on ideas. Halfway through I started to feel I was in a psychiatric counseling session for suicidal depression, phobia, self worth, and debilitating anxiety. He admits to having these mental health issues and uses his experiences to shine light on issues the reader may be going through. I applaud him for continuing to conquer his demons, and this may very well be a good book for a person that is severely depressed. However, it gets a little dark for someone just looking for a “comfort”, cozy, feel good book. One of his fears he talks about in the book is the fear of death and uncertainty, and how he rationalizes it. My strong belief in Christianity has a simple answer to that anxiety, GOD 🙏🏼💜

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Kind, Profound, Delightful Book

S.H. · September 2, 2025

I can't praise this book enough! If you've ever struggled with depression, especially with suicidality, this book is amazing. Each short page is so full of inspiring wisdom, hard won by the author's own personal struggles. There is so much empathy and love and HOPE in these pages. Be kind to yourself and get this profound book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful and thought provoking compilation of hopeful tidbits

R.V. · September 24, 2022

This is the third book I’ve read from Matt Haig, and I have to give him credit for not constraining himself to one genre. There does seem to be an underlying theme to his work, at least what I’ve seen of it so far (“The Midnight Library” and “Humans”) and that is hope and positive change, especially mentally and emotionally, through thoughtful introspection and self discovery. That theme has never been more prevalent than in this book. “The Comfort Book” is not a fiction story that portrays the human condition through extraordinary circumstances, rather it’s a series of musings, thoughts, quotes, lists, and the occasional anecdote that all give the reader something to think about in terms of our self esteem and self worth. He doesn’t have all the answers, nor does he pretend to at any point. He just offers a different perspective on how to look at life, wisdom he has gained through his battles with severe depression and anxiety disorders. I really admire him for having the outlook he writes about, considering the emotional burden he has carried. This book might not necessarily change your entire life, but I think if you read it slowly and carefully, taking the time to let the ideas bounce around in your mind and really ingest what he’s saying, I think you’ll find some comforting perspectives. There’s a lot to quote, and honestly I don’t think I’ve ever highlighted so many lines in a book before, but a lot of it makes the most sense in context, so it doesn’t just seem like a series of fortune cookie sayings on their own. I think if you go into this expecting to find all the answers to dealing with emotional trauma, or you just blow through the short passages to read the book faster, and don’t take the time to really think about what you just read, you’ll be doing yourself a disservice. This book has to be read slowly, carefully, and thoughtfully. I have to highly recommend this one, and while it’s not my favorite book ever, as some of the perspectives were a little too metaphysical for me, even while keeping an open mind, I think it may be the best book I’ve read this year, and I think in our troubled times, we could all use some perspective like Matt Haig’s.

Comfort you can hold
