“Penguin provides introductory essays; superb analyses by the series editor, Ben Saunders; and extensive bibliographies.”
—Michael Dirda, The Washington Post
“Stories become classics when generations of readers sort through them, talk about them, imitate them, and recommend them. In this case, baby boomers read them when they débuted, Gen X-ers grew up with their sequels, and millennials encountered them through Marvel movies. Each generation of fans—initially fanboys, increasingly fangirls, and these days nonbinary fans, too—found new ways not just to read the comics but to use them. That’s how canons form. Amateurs and professionals, over decades, come to something like consensus about which books matter and why—or else they love to argue about it, and we get to follow the arguments. Canons rise and fall, gain works and lose others, when one generation of people with the power to publish, teach, and edit diverges from the one before ... A top-flight comic by Kirby—or his successor on “Captain America,” Jim Steranko—barely needed words. You could follow the story just by watching the characters act and react. Thankfully, Penguin volumes do justice to these images. They reproduce sixties comics in bright, flat, colorful inks on thick white paper—unlike the dot-based process used on old newsprint, but perhaps truer to their bold, thrill-chasing spirit.”

About the Author
Steve Ditko (1927– 2018) began his comics career in the anthologies of the 1950s, where his unique style quickly earned him recognition and respect. He was recruited in 1958 to join Stan Lee’s Atlas Comics, which was later transformed into Marvel, where his talent for expressionistic caricature contrasted well with Jack Kirby’s gift for widescreen- style spectacle. In 1962, in the pages of Amazing Fantasy, Ditko and Lee brought to life Peter Parker, the Amazing Spider- Man, changing the industry forever. During the same period, he also co‑created (with Lee) and plotted the first adventures of Doctor Strange. After leaving Marvel in 1966, Ditko drew the Blue Beetle and Captain Atom for Charlton Comics; the Creeper and Shade the Changing Man for DC Comics; and Mr. A., an independent creation whose black-and-white vision of morality reflected Ditko’s own political philosophy. Ditko returned to Marvel during the late 1970s and remained there for much of the 1980s, co‑creating Speedball, the Masked Marvel, the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, and other prominent characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Collection for Spider-Man Fans!
Penguin Classics’ “The Amazing Spider-Man” collects “Amazing Fantasy” #15, “The Amazing Spider-Man” #1-4, 9-10, 13-14, & 17-19 along with summaries of “Amazing Spider-Man” #5-8, #11-12, #15-16, Annual #1, and material from “Strange Tales” #97, all written by Stan Lee and illustrated by Steve Ditko. These stories detail much of Spidey’s formative first two years, while Ben Saunders’ introduction explains the historical context of the comic book industry at the time as well as the legacy of Lee & Ditko’s work. Jason Reynolds’ foreword describes what Spider-Man – and his teenaged alter ego Peter Parker – meant to Reynolds and his brother as young readers, further helping to contextualize the character. These stories introduce Spider-Man’s friends and family, Aunt May, J. Jonah Jameson, Betty Brant, Liz Allen, and Flash Allen. Spider-Man regularly works with members of the Fantastic Four, developing a friendship with the Human Torch, and even meets the Avengers in these stories. Additionally, classic recurring villains make their first appearances, including the Vulture, Doctor Octopus, Sandman, the Lizard, Electro, Big Man & the Enforcers (Montana, Fancy Dan, & Ox), Mysterio, the Green Goblin, Kraven the Hunter, the Sinister Six, and Mac Gargan (who later become the Scorpion & Venom). The story from “Strange Tales” #97 features a couple named Aunt May and Uncle Ben months before “Amazing Fantasy” #15, though these two have little in common with Peter Parker’s family as their story so thoroughly departs from the May & Ben who appeared later. These formative issues underscore the significance of Spider-Man and lay the groundwork for the hundreds and hundreds of stories that followed. As Stan Lee noted in the end of issue 9, summing up Ol’ Web-head’s appeal, Spider-Man is “the superhero who could be – you!” (pg. 162). In addition to the stunning presentation of this volume with its bold red covers with gilt details and page edges, Penguin added bonus material for fans new and old. This volume includes three appendices, suggestions for further reading, and a notes section as befitting the best of Penguin’s historical collections. The overall presentation makes it a truly lovely volume to gift to any fan.
5.0 out of 5 stars A must if your a spiderman fan
Great book looks awesome
5.0 out of 5 stars Great for actually reading Amazing Fantasy No. 15!
Who doesn't want to own an Amazing Fantasy No. 15?!? But if you had one, it would be hermetically sealed inside its graded case, and probably tucked away inside a climate-controlled vault to avoid any chance of damage. Or enjoyment, if you come right down to it: you'd never dream of touching it or (gasp!) actually reading it.That's why I loved this volume so much. It was wonderful to experience some of the foundational Spider-Man comics as if they had been purchased off the rack in the corner five-and-dime (albeit, as part of this volume, considerably less able to be folded and carried inside one's back pocket). But everything's there in all the original glory: the stories; the artwork; even original fan letters to the editor. Add contemporary essays and interesting historical commentary to the mix, and you better understand why these comics have become an essential part of the zeitgeist and are worthy of such a sumptuous and well-executed volume. Treat yourself!
5.0 out of 5 stars Classic. What else is there to say?
Early comics are such a joy to read. There's a certain charm in them that's hard to find now. These are the heroes I grew up on, and these stories helped me get into writing.
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! I want a volume 2
I have been getting into Spider-Man just in time for its 60th anniversary so I preordered this collection of early Lee & Ditko years comics. I don't read American comics very often, and while some of these stories may seem a little simple or quaint by the standards of today's more complex narratives, they are engrossing all the same and the last several issues included just got better and better til I was glued. It is terrific being able to see the origins of this character and others as well as where filmmakers like Sam Raimi derived a lot of their own interpretations of Spider-Man from. The printing quality is quite good (a few pages had some slight blemishing probably as a printer mistake, but nothing severe) and the overall presentation of things is very crisp and easy to read.Part of me does wish though that this volume collected the first 18 issues with no skipping at all, a few issues are skipped over and have their events summarized in their place. I understand why this was done, and some of them did sound skip-worthy, but there were a couple described involving Doc Ock and more drama with Betty that I really would have rather gotten to read than just had summarized. Still, worth five stars. I really hope these Penguin Marvel books are not just one-offs and that second volumes get released. Spider-Man comics compilations like this seem to get very rare and valuable after a little while, and it's very lucky I was able to get this for just $28. Let's hope the success of this release promises us more. We didn't even get to see Gwen Stacy or MJ yet!

It’s a great comic book and I recommend Bolo is the great at delive
5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for any Marvel Fan
Huge Spider-Man fan and also love the old school comics, this is a great gift or collection item to pick up. The book is put together well and feels great to hold, love the gold leafing adds a a touch of quality to the over book. Highly recommend getting it if you’re into comics, marvel, or spiderman.
5.0 out of 5 stars Obsessed!
The media could not be loaded. I preordered this as a gift to my brother who absolutely loves comics and superheroes. It came exactly on the day it released and in perfect condition! It is a bit bigger than I originally thought it would be, but considering it is a collection, it makes sense. I haven’t opened it yet since his birthday isn’t until a couple months later but I have no complaints thus far. The price was pretty good considering it is a collection of comics, hardcover, and has “fancy” features. I have no regrets with this purchase.
Clássico!!

Item is very good, but arrived damaged because of delivery.
This book is very nice, the gold finish makes it look even beautiful and the contents are picked to perfectly display who spider-man is and why he has become so popular. The people packaging and delivering damaged the item however (by presumably cutting something else in the storage room they cut into the spine of this book, and when delivering the corners were damaged). So if you are planning to keep this in perfect shape, this might not be the place to buy it from.Overall, still a pretty good buy but I'd like to request to be a bit more careful with these books!

The best way to start reading Spider-man, Captain America & Black Panther
As a huge DC comics fan and collector, I was always a bit hesitant to get into Marvel (one publishing house is expensive enough as a hobby). But since I'm a huge MCU fan, owning all the movies on BluRay I was always very much interest into Marvel and the history behind the work the movies were based on.The only Marvel comics I ever read before this were "Civil War" & "Secret Invasion."As a literature student in college, these three editions are absolutely perfect and almost seem made for me. This is the perfect starting point for any collection, or just for people who want to check out the start of these characters. These volumes feature various forewords and introductions by scholars or writers. At the back of these volumes you get some further reading lists, just like any other classic literary work. It's for this very reason why these three volumes are worth picking up. The books themselves are absolutely beautiful with a nice matte finished feel to the paper and it makes the colour pop.For me personally, it's a good starting point because I want to write my bachelor thesis on why comic book stories can be equally as important as any other significant literary work. These three editions help build that argument, besides that, the stories themselves are pretty amazing (see what I did there). Especially this Spider-man volume; it features almost all the iconic rogues he is known for in his movies and more.Yes, these additions are a bit pricey, but if you are fan of comic books, or literature in general and you want to dive a bit deeper than a normal collected volume: this should be worth all the money. You won't regret it!
