Review

“Without The Artist's Way, there would have been no Eat, Pray, Love.”
—Elizabeth Gilbert

"
The Artist's Way is not exclusively about writing—it is about discovering and developing the artist within, whether a painter, poet, screenwriter, or musician—but it is a lot about writing. If you have always wanted to pursue a creative dream, have always wanted to play and create with words or paints, this book will gently get you started and help you learn all kinds of paying-attention techniques; and that, after all, is what being an artist is all about. It's about learning to pay attention."
—Anne Lamott

"This is a book that addresses a delicate and complex subject. For those who will use it, it is a valuable tool to get in touch with their own creativity."
—Martin Scorsese

Loved this book. It felt like sitting down with a wise friend who kept nudging me to make space for creativity. Some of the references feel a little outdated for today’s world, but the heartbeat of the book- the reminders to listen to your inner voice, to show up on the page, to carve out space for inspiration are timeless. I walked away feeling both inspired and equipped with practices I can actually use in daily life.

The Artist’s Way is more than just a book — it’s a 12-week journey to rediscovering your creativity. Whether you're an artist, writer, musician, or simply someone who feels creatively blocked, Julia Cameron’s approach is both practical and inspiring. Her two core tools — morning pages and the artist date — sound simple but are incredibly effective. Morning pages helped me clear mental clutter and connect with myself, while artist dates rekindled a sense of play I hadn’t felt in years. What I appreciated most is that Cameron doesn’t make creativity feel exclusive. She reminds us that everyone is creative — it’s just a matter of nurturing that part of ourselves again. Some parts may feel a bit spiritual or repetitive, but if you commit to the process, the rewards are worth it. I finished the 12 weeks feeling more confident, energized, and open to new ideas. Highly recommend this to anyone feeling stuck or looking for a creative reset.

5.0 out of 5 stars best creative book I’ve read

D.B. · August 3, 2025

This book can change your life if you do the work. And the work is hard, it’s open ended and it takes time. I’ve been doing morning pages for close to 6 months, and every day my understanding of art and creativity continuous to evolve towards a more complete version in a way that has helped me learn to freeflow and not judge my own work, focusing on showing up. It’s seriously a pain to do this course in countless ways but it’s worth it. If you’re struggling creatively, show yourself that you REALLY want to advance by completing the book and 12-week course it walks you through.

I know it's a classic, but that's not always a good thing. Dated new-age self-help truisms, circa 2000. Save your money and go for a walk. According to Elizabeth Gilbert, "without The Artist's Way, there would have been no Eat, Pray, Love." Enough said.
