The Ship of Brides: A Novel

Description:

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Giver of Stars and Someone Else's Shoes, a post-WWII story of the war brides who crossed the seas by the thousands to face their unknown futures.

1946. World War II has ended and all over the world, young women are beginning to fulfill the promises made to the men they wed in wartime.

In Sydney, Australia, four women join 650 other war brides on an extraordinary voyage to England—aboard HMS
Victoria, which still carries not just arms and aircraft but a thousand naval officers. Rules are strictly enforced, from the aircraft carrier’s captain down to the lowliest young deckhand. But the men and the brides will find their lives intertwined despite the Navy’s ironclad sanctions. And for Frances Mackenzie, the complicated young woman whose past comes back to haunt her far from home, the journey will change her life in ways she never could have predicted—forever.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Read

B. · November 14, 2020

This was an interesting and enjoyable book. I was not aware of the ships of brides which took so many women to UK to be with British servicemen they had married during shore leave in WW2. Nor was I aware of the extent that those small island of Indonesia played a role during the war.The characters were all believable and Jojo Moyes did a great job involving them in their individual and joint storylines. I can imagine how hard it was for the captain to try to contain the crew and be able to keep 600 women entertained on long journey like that on a ship not built for that role. For the women, the initial excitement of heading to new country to be with their husbands suddenly became fear that they may end up unwanted with rumors and gossip spreading like wildfire. For the crew, keeping themselves contained was an obvious struggle.A well written book combining fact and fiction keeping the reader entertained throughout. It deserves 4.5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Based on true happenings

This book was very Historical which made it even more interesting. All these brides on this ship made for interesting reading. Lots going on. I couldn't wait to see how it ended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Spoilers about the dog

J.R. · January 19, 2016

I'm such a fan of Jojo Moyes. This is the third book by her that I've read and it's a little slower than The Girl You Left Behind and Silver Bay. It's good, and recommended, but does take a while to get to the meat of the story. She's a fantastic writer and her characters are all developed perfectly. I gave this three stars because of the dog. Stop reading now if you don't want spoilers. So - Margaret boarded the ship with her dog and set sail on this long journey overseas. I get it - I love my dogs and wouldn't want to leave them behind if I were to move. But this poor dog is sequestered to a room for many weeks and is treated like a secret to be kept because pets are not allowed to be brought on the ship. She gets one bathroom break a day, maybe two if someone can sneak her out of the room for a minute or two. Margaret describes sweltering heat aboard the ship, which the dog also has to suffer through. Then, there's a fire on board and the situation leads the dog to running to the one place that she might find her owner during the chaos, only to be let down. The dog dies while trying to scratch her way out of wherever she is, and is then "buried at sea" by Margaret, who tosses her poor little body into the water after crying about how much she loves the dog. I understand that this is fictional, but it still made me feel terrible. The author did what she was supposed to do - she made me feel for the characters in her book, even though the feelings weren't all flowers and rainbows.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting book based on an actual event

V. · April 2, 2023

It is a very interesting story but rambling at times. It keeps you reading and it ends well, but parts are hard to slog through. I gave it a four as I just had to know how it ended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story!

S.M. · September 17, 2025

Most people know about the British girls who married GI’s during WW11 but I didn’t realize Australian girls married British servicemen. This is such a great story, based on true facts, that gives us insight into the hopes, fears and emotions of the young women who followed their hearts to leave their homes and join husbands they barely knew.Another winner from Jo Jo Moyes.

5.0 out of 5 stars I’m sad that I finished it

One of the best books I have read in a long time. Read it, you won’t be sorry. Amazing story and writing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Read

M.W. · May 14, 2015

I love all of Jojo Moyes novels. She does her homework with history and develops great characters. This is a perfect book with a realistic plot that kept me reading to the end with few interruptions. And I learned some interesting history relevant to World War II. Some of the old-fashioned ideas about a woman and what she should/should not be like were so prejudicial. Thank heavens this has mostly changed in most countries.

História e romance juntos

O livro tem uma grande pegada, é um registro histórico de um determinado momento da pos-guerra. Então, o leitor tem romance, história e relatos verídicos extraídos de jornais e revistas da época. Bem interessante!

a beautiful, emotional and touching historic romance

A.M. · February 2, 2024

From the moment you meet Margaret, Francis, Avice and Jean, you are gripped by the enormous journey these Aussie girls had to undertake to be reunited with their new British husbands. It’s just after the 2nd world war, so hopping on a plane wasn’t an option. With luxury passenger ships already full, the Red Cross and British armed forces decide to put over 650 brides on the flight ship Victorious for a 6 week journey across the globe to their new life in England.Mags, Avice, Frances and Jean are four of these young girls, each with their own story and reasons to make the journey. We follow them as they navigate life on board, living in cramped quarters with all the other girls, attending lectures on what to expect from married life in post-war England, and attending social events put on by the crew of hardened sailors. Each has their own struggles. Margaret is heavily pregnant, and the baby is not the only passenger she has brought on board with her! Avice is desperate to do things right and befriend the sort of girls one should be friends with, and it’s not her room mates. Sixteen year old Jean is so giddy with happiness, and oblivious to the dangers the ship’s crew pose to her future. And Frances, a nurse, knows all too well what happens when people abuse that innocent curiosity. The captain, the WSO’s and the marines tasked with guarding the brides have their hands full in getting everyone across without incidents. And then there is the question: will they be welcome in their new home? Who will receive a dreaded “Don’t come” telegram?I loved this book! The author describes everything with so much detail, nuance and emotion that you feel as if you are one of the gang. You root for each girl, wanting them to get their happily ever after, and cry when things get tough. It keeps you turning page after page, till it’s over and you wish there were a thousand pages more. One of the easiest 5 stars on my reading list.

Buen final

3.0 out of 5 stars Spoilers about the dog

It is a very interesting story but rambling at times. It keeps you reading and it ends well, but parts are hard to slog through. I gave it a four as I just had to know how it ended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Read

I love all of Jojo Moyes novels. She does her homework with history and develops great characters. This is a perfect book with a realistic plot that kept me reading to the end with few interruptions. And I learned some interesting history relevant to World War II. Some of the old-fashioned ideas about a woman and what she should/should not be like were so prejudicial. Thank heavens this has mostly changed in most countries.

História e romance juntos

L. · November 23, 2019

O livro tem uma grande pegada, é um registro histórico de um determinado momento da pos-guerra. Então, o leitor tem romance, história e relatos verídicos extraídos de jornais e revistas da época. Bem interessante!

a beautiful, emotional and touching historic romance

Buen final
