Pride and Prejudice

Description:

Austen's most popular novel, the unforgettable story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy

Few have failed to be charmed by the witty and independent spirit of Elizabeth Bennet in Austen’s beloved classic
Pride and Prejudice. When Elizabeth Bennet first meets eligible bachelor Fitzwilliam Darcy, she thinks him arrogant and conceited; he is indifferent to her good looks and lively mind. When she later discovers that Darcy has involved himself in the troubled relationship between his friend Bingley and her beloved sister Jane, she is determined to dislike him more than ever. In the sparkling comedy of manners that follows, Jane Austen shows us the folly of judging by first impressions and superbly evokes the friendships, gossip and snobberies of provincial middle-class life. This Penguin Classics edition, based on Austen's first edition, contains the original Penguin Classics introduction by Tony Tanner and an updated introduction and notes by Viven Jones.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

About the Author

Jane Austen was born on December 16, 1775 at Steventon near Basingstoke, the seventh child of the rector of the parish. She lived with her family at Steventon until they moved to Bath when her father retired in 1801. After his death in 1805, she moved around with her mother; in 1809, they settled in Chawton, near Alton, Hampshire. Here she remained, except for a few visits to London, until in May 1817 she moved to Winchester to be near her doctor. There she died on July 18, 1817. As a girl Jane Austen wrote stories, including burlesques of popular romances. Her works were only published after much revision, four novels being published in her lifetime. These are Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma(1816). Two other novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, were published posthumously in 1818 with a biographical notice by her brother, Henry Austen, the first formal announcement of her authorship. Persuasion was written in a race against failing health in 1815-16. She also left two earlier compositions, a short epistolary novel, Lady Susan, and an unfinished novel, The Watsons. At the time of her death, she was working on a new novel, Sanditon, a fragmentary draft of which survives.

Vivien Jones is a senior lecturer in English at the University of Leeds.

Tony Tanner was a Fellow of King’s College, Cambridge and a professor of English and American literature at the University of Cambridge. He died in December 1998.

5.0 out of 5 stars Austen’s best work perhaps.

C. · October 6, 2025

The development of characters as they mature and go through experiences is so authentic as to seem biographical rather than fictional. It’s a beautifully written, feel good, “happily ever after” story. A delightful read and so necessary a departure from the horrors of the news lately.

5.0 out of 5 stars worth it

C.G. · September 17, 2025

If you can get into the groove of the prose this book is seriously a delight. I’ve always loved this story but only ever knew it from the mini series and the movie. It was so fascinating to get so much more depth from these characters I thought I knew so well. I especially loved getting the little glimpses of povs that weren’t Elizabeth’s. Overall, I had a really fun time reading it and would recommend that every avid reader take a chance on the og enemies to lovers romance.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a Classic

F. · October 15, 2025

It's a classic, so I won't bother with the merits of the book other than to say that my high school daughter, who doesn't like anything, thought it was "fine," which is glorious and overwhelming praise coming from someone who thought the nightime light show and fireworks at Magic Kingdom were "okay I guess."

4.0 out of 5 stars worth it for the characters

B.T. · March 29, 2025

Elizabeth has a strength of character and ability to navigate The social world with confidence that is instructive and inspiring. Mr. Bennett is hilarious and clearly loves his daughters and steps up when needed. Lady Catherine is and imperious piece of work who likes to bully others... unfortunately a character we are all familiar with. The characters in this book and the gradual unfolding of Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth’s relationship makes this book a pleasure to read. If I had to choose between this and Middlemarch, I would choose Middlemarch every time. However they are very different books so perhaps it’s not a fair comparison. Either way it was a book I definitely enjoyed reading and would recommend for those who love and grossing novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every Word Was Pure Perfection

t.n. · October 13, 2025

I've read Pride and Prejudice multiple times, but there's something about having a physical Penguin Classics edition that makes the experience even better. The book itself is well-made with quality binding and pages that don't feel flimsy. The introduction and notes add helpful context without being overwhelming, which I appreciated as someone who enjoys understanding the historical background. Elizabeth Bennet remains one of the most well-written characters in literature, and this edition does the story justice. It's become my go-to copy for rereading, and it looks great on my bookshelf too. If you're looking for a solid edition of this classic, this one delivers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Always a joy to read

It’s a classic for a reason! I’m sure it won’t be my last read-through. But this time I intend to follow it by finally watching the movie lol.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for classic readers

L.D. · May 12, 2025

I don’t read a lot but I honestly loved this book! The characters are unique and the story was so interesting. Do keep in mind that this takes place during the regency period, so the language, and the way people communicated was different at the time. If you want to read this, take some time to read it privately, preferably out loud.

Classic, not without a reason!

C. · June 11, 2018

Love it, love it, love it! Excellent book. It will keep you glued till the very end. You'll be left wanting for more by the time you finish this. Language can be a bit tricky, nothing a dictionary app cannot fix. The acrid language, piercing detail and the vivid picturization make this a worthwhile read. I'll probably read it again and again many times just for the pure joy of reading - there is something of nice and pleasant flow of her language. Now as for book and printing - very nice. The font used is Sabon instead of something ghastly like Times New Roman. Text size is quite comfortable. Paper quality is nice and has a smooth texture to it, although people accustomed to the bright off-white pages might be a bit disappointed at the not so bright pages. So my suggestion is to buy the penguin edition.

i like it!!
