The Symposium (Penguin Classics)

Description:

A fascinating discussion on sex, gender, and human instincts, as relevant today as ever

In the course of a lively drinking party, a group of Athenian intellectuals exchange views on eros, or desire. From their conversation emerges a series of subtle reflections on gender roles, sex in society and the sublimation of basic human instincts. The discussion culminates in a radical challenge to conventional views by Plato's mentor, Socrates, who advocates transcendence through spiritual love.
The Symposium is a deft interweaving of different viewpoints and ideas about the nature of love—as a response to beauty, a cosmic force, a motive for social action and as a means of ethical education.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. This is a short read, the book was written extremely well. I read it college many years ago, just read it again and it opened my eyes and mind ten folds

The media could not be loaded. Wild read. Didn’t expect to enjoy it this much—Plato really knew how to stir up a dinner party

its NOT a good story. plato goes on and on about how heterosexuality is not as good as male homosexuality and ONLY men on men can experience love as its meant to be, (thus insinuating that lesbians are probably the worst off), and further it seems that PEDO love is not only acceptable, but the right way to bring young men up. there were some interesting approaches to the topic of love, the style of discussion was engaging, and the character socrates brings an thought provoking views, but its hard to look past pedo love and the near mocking of heterosexuality as if its for simpletons.that being said, the book was in great condition, and the published version and delivery were excellent. one star was knocked because plato is lauded for bringing philosophical genius to our culture, but i didnt like the book at all, and despite finishing the short read, got nothing intellectual out of it other than an understanding of ancient greek pompous...but not anyone's fault but plato's.

Everyone should read. This is base for much of humanity today. Especially art and beauty. Would give it all the stars in the sky if I could. Loved it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Plato's philosophy, obscure & complex, re: love and relationships.

E. · April 25, 2024

The dialogue is compelling and interesting with plenty of contrasting opinions. Love may make the world go round but it has a strange down side, would you not agree?

5.0 out of 5 stars Comical, Poetic, Enlightening.

5 out of 5 stars! If you like ancient philosophy, then you will love this book. As most of his Socratic dialogues go; Plato, through the lens of Socrates and his interlocutors, examines the nature of love and beauty. It was unlike anything I’ve ever read from Plato before. I found the levels of perspective to be extremely interesting—if you keep that in mind while going through this, it makes for a very interesting read. The idea of “a ladder”, seems to present itself if more than one way.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the Plato book that I think most people are thinking

D.L.N. · March 29, 2021

It talks about where the sexes are from. In a creation emblem kind of way. It does not talk about the navel (belly button) in any way shape or form. Which is what Demi Moore talked about in the Butcher's Wife. And I was told it was Plato.

Thank you

This is probably one of Plato's most accessible texts. Lighthearted and profound. Interesting excursion on the topic of love that offers an intimate glance of an evening amongst friends in ancient Greece.
