The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing

Description:

The New York Times bestselling classic of a young woman’s journey in work, love, and life

“In this swinging, funny, and tender study of contemporary relationships, Bank refutes once and for all the popular notions of neurotic thirtysomething women.” —Entertainment Weekly

“Truly poignant.” —Time

Generous-hearted and wickedly insightful,
The Girls’ Guide to Hunting and Fishing maps the progress of Jane Rosenal as she sets out on a personal and spirited expedition through the perilous terrain of sex, love, relationships, and the treacherous waters of the workplace. Soon Jane is swept off her feet by an older man and into a Fitzgeraldesque whirl of cocktail parties, country houses, and rules that were made to be broken, but comes to realize that it’s a world where the stakes are much too high for comfort. With an unforgettable comic touch, Bank skillfully teases out universal issues, puts a clever new spin on the mating dance, and captures in perfect pitch what it’s like to come of age as a young woman.

THE GIRLS GUIDE TO HUNTING AND FISHING by Melissa BankOctober 7, 2004THE GIRLS GUIDE TO HUNTING AND FISHING is not a novel. It's a series of stories (some that had been published previously) centering on Jane Rosenal, starting from the age of fourteen through middle age. Each story reveals something different about her, puts her in different situations, and in nearly every single story, it is told with a lot of wit and sassy humor. I found myself chuckling through some of the earlier stories, and found myself empathizing with her in another story (about her father dying from cancer).I don't know of any other way to describe this "novel". It isn't a novel and so there was no climax or high point at the end of the last chapter. However, I did feel a sense of "ending" with that last story, feeling that maybe Jane had finally found someone that she may love for the rest of her life, or maybe as she said "We are just two mayflies mating on a summer night". Very profound. My overall feeling about this "book" is that I loved it, mainly because it is not what I had expected. With a title such as THE GIRLS GUIDE TO HUNTING AND FISHING, I expected a tale centering on a teenage girl living in Wisconsin, for instance. What I did not expect was a coming-of-age series of short stories, chronicling the life of one woman from New England, along with her desires, thoughts, and opinions. I found it unique and it kept my attention throughout the entire book. The middle story, which many readers have questioned, bothers me as well. But, from what I feel after reading this book, it was just a "lull", a transition story, in which Jane had moved into her deceased aunt's apartment, and it signified a big change in her life (her starting her relationship with her aunt's friend Archie). It was a rather weird blip in this series of stories, and that is only my guess as to why it appeared in the book. Other than that, I have no real complaints about THE GIRLS GUIDE TO HUNTING AND FISHING. With that said, I don't think this is a book that any reader can enjoy. One needs to be in a certain frame of mind, and come to the book not expecting anything in particular, or you may be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars wow. This book is like riding a wave all the way in

m.d. · March 4, 2025

The writing is awesome and the insights even better. This book is so true about what goes on in a girl/woman’s head and heart. And it’s funny too. What more could you ask. Start reading and you won’t stop til the end and then you want more.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cute read

K.D. · January 7, 2018

I liked the narration in this book and felt like I would be friends with Jane if she were real. Her voice made me smile as I read. The structure of the book is interesting but potentially confusing if you put the book down for too long. I enjoyed the book overall but don't think it will really stick with me, as it is a little forgettable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for my daughters

J. · January 6, 2024

Bought this book for my 20 something year old daughters. They both recently graduated college and I heard about this book from friends in advertising because the author was a copywriter in the ad biz early in her career. My daughters loved it. “ Witty, clever and honest” were words that they used. I will read it next. Sad that the author died last year from cancer. She would be happy to know that she touched both my daughter’s hearts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Portrait of a previous New York, with romance

This book is like a period piece of 1980s/1990s New York. It is about affluent people with minor life crises. I enjoyed reading it for what it is, and it kept me wanting to read more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything it should be and more

Why did it take me so long to get this book? I loved its honesty and humor. These connected stories immerse the reader in the main character’s truly humorous and occasionally stressed view of her life. Enjoy the experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Woman's Guide to Discovering Her Self

L. · June 19, 2017

I love this book, even (especially) upon re-reading it. It's more like a series of connected short stories focused on a particularly character (two of them not even from her point of view). When the chapters are in the protagonist's (Jane's) point of view, it is very witty, in a tongue-in-cheek kind of way. The first chapter (my favorite) is about Jane's view of her brother's first serious girlfriend and how that impacts her views on relationships and identity. A later chapter, written (ambiguously) from another character's, contemplative, of view, is about being with someone who loves the idea of being with you, rather than you. The last chapter (that shares a title with the book) is about playing at dating like a game instead of being yourself. Even though the book is mainly about romantic relationships, it's also about relationships in general and how those relationships affect your sense of self.

Loved it!

One of those books that makes it impossible to put it down, easy to read and gives you lots to think about, swelling back in my own memories of fishing and hunting.

Great book of interconnecting short stories

o. · August 3, 2011

I put off buying this book because I associated it with "chick lit" (maybe it is chick lit, but as it should be). I changed my mind when I came across Bank's excellent story "The Wonder Spot" in an anthology. The same elements in that story can be found in this anthology: humor, intelligence, wit, great writing, messed-up relationships, and struggles with one's place in the world. Great!!

A boys’ guide too

A.C. · August 11, 2018

Great book which looks misleadingly like chick lit from the title and the cover, but which is not at all - in fact, it’s a super-smart, witty, believable and eminently readable collection of short story-cum-chapters looking at human relationships. Fab.

Wise and funny

S. · October 12, 2019

This is not a novel exactly, but a series of stories narrated (bar one) by Jane. Mercifully they’re in chronological order so when we first meet her, she’s a sprightly 14 yo, and her older brother brings a girlfriend to meet the family. Then she’s older and goes with her boyfriend to a Caribbean island to holiday with his ex and the ex’s new man. You can imagine how that went. Jane indulges in some straight talking. Later, as an editor, she has an on again off again relationship with a much older man: an alcoholic with diabetes. He’s a great guy in many respects but ... He goes into ketoacidosis just as her doctor father is dying of leukaemia. Hard times. Her next boyfriend seems perfect till she notices how angry he is. Nevertheless he helps her through her own bad health situation but eventually she realises that he doesn’t really hear her. I’m sure many of us can relate to that. In the final, very funny story, she meets a great guy at her friend’s wedding. Disillusioned by her previous hunting and fishing expeditions in the relationship lake, she furtively buys one of those advice books that tell women to play hard to get and suppress their real selves. She internalises the voices of the authors, who dispense advice at every turn (“Insist on advance notice for dates!” etc), thus almost ruining her chance to finally have the satisfying partnership we all dream of. Luckily, she claws it back just in time, allowing herself to be real, and funny, quirky and open.Jane is a very likeable narrator. Her voice is honest and matter of fact. Big emotions are there, but there’s no drama queening. The warmth of her family is palpable, as are its sorrows, all the more powerful for the laconic way in which they’re presented. A very enjoyable read.

TERRIBLE book quality

D.D. · August 13, 2015

The quality of book is terrible, like books sold on pathways/roadside. The pages are of terrible quality, font and colour (very hazy words) and this is definitely not an original copy but a pirated one. Kindly look into the sellers stock because paying INR 799 for this book was DEFINITELY not worth it.
