Talk to the Elephant: Design Learning for Behavior Change (Voices That Matter)

Description:

What do you do when your learners know what to do but still aren't doing it?

Training is created with the goal of changing learners' behaviors, but anyone who has created learning experiences knows that there's a big gap between knowing and doing. You can create an engaging learning experience that informs and helps people remember, but often those people go back to their regular world and continue to do things the same way they always have.

In the last few decades, the fields of psychology, behavioral economics, and other behavioral sciences have brought an enormous amount of scientific research into helping people with behavior change. Only a fraction of that research has made its way back into learning design.

Talk to the Elephant: Design Learning for Behavior Change shows you how to add critical tools to your learning design toolbox to affect behavior change. You'll find out how to use frameworks and strategies from behavioral science to help you research and analyze challenges, feel more confident that you're solving the right problem, and design and test solutions that can help people with difficult behavior changes.

By the end of this book, you'll be able to

  • Map the change journey of your learners and identify their path
  • Assess and clearly communicate the value of the change
  • Use motivation models to better understand what learners really care about
  • Utilize evidence-based models like the COM-B Model to analyze behavior-change challenges
  • Use a diagnostic checklist to determine whether you actually have a training problem
  • Identify behavior-change techniques to address your specific challenges

5.0 out of 5 stars Learning & Design essential resource

L.B. · September 10, 2025

Julie does an expert job combining behavior change research and actionable design advise in an accessible, engaging way. I would've liked to have it go into more specifics with the COM-B model, but separate resources exist for that. If you are in the L&D world or anywhere adjacent, this is an essential book to have in your toolkit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Your Go-To Guide to Designing for Change!

E.F. · September 7, 2025

How do you follow a book as good as /Design for How People Learn/? With one that's even better! Dirksen's first book is a great foundation for instructional design that's an invaluable ready reference. But /Talk to the Elephant/ takes it one step farther and makes learning design even more useful because it's applied to the real issue: getting people to change behavior.Frankly, this is the elephant in the room, and the book is a great guide to tackling behavior change. It's a great way to learn about the different models out there, to be able to map the change journey, and then design the right interventions. The format and writing are really concrete and accessible. Whether it's a critical safety training at work, getting people to save for retirement, or just improving how teams work, this helps you move the needle. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars My most recommended book for managers/leaders in 2025

A.C. · September 11, 2025

This became one of my most recommended book for product managers, managers, and leaders over the last year. I've mentioned it repeatedly in my newsletter. It has inspired many great conversations. What I love most about this book is the balance of theory/research, and practical application. Something clicked about behavior design that never clicked before.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lesson in emotional intelligence all L&D professionals need

C.S. · September 10, 2025

I recommend this book to anyone and everyone who will listen! Julie’s message is crucial for L&D.Stop trying to “make” people learn and figure out why they should care about what you have to say.Stop teaching how you “think” people learn. Stop trying to make them care about what YOU think is interesting and try to understand what interests THEM.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Useful

H.E.T. · September 13, 2025

This book has been extremely useful to me in my work as a corporate trainer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential and practical research-informed advice for anyone seeking to design for behavior change.

S.F. · September 23, 2023

If you're in L&D or any role in which you wish to influence behavior, or you need persuading that the "knowledge transfer" approach to behavior change is inadequate in most contexts, then read this book and do what it suggests. It's a pleasure to read in multiple respects: the thoughtful application of what the science tells us, the recognition that there's still a lot we don't know (and more to say beyond the scope of the book), the empathy for the worker/learner and the designer, the recognition of context and avoidance of simplistic propositions, the structure, the enjoyable prose that's crystal clear while being as technical as it needs to be but no more, the numerous examples, the illustrations, the image selection, the typesetting. The whole thing is just brilliant, and a terrific follow-on from Julie's "Design for How Humans Learn"This is a rich resource for anyone wanting to know how and why people change behavior, or don't! But the real gift for a learning or behavior change designer (because not all change requires learning!) is the fruit of Julie's deep experience: lots and lots and lots of examples of how learning design for behavior change might work out in practice.I strongly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars I had no idea…

L.G. · September 10, 2025

…that ONE book could make me a raving fan. I have bought multiple copies to give to fellow educators, and now I read everything she writes.A must read for anyone who wants to be a part of designing learning to change behavior. In helping the reader to learn, Ms. Dirksen applies the principles she’s advocating in her book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read

Amazing book on learning design and behavior change

E.G.Q. · September 10, 2025

This is the best book on learning design and behavior change I've read recently.I've worked on Learning and Development for the past decade and sometimes it is easy to loose track that learning aims to develop new behaviors, this book was a reminder and a toolkit on how different it is when designing and intervening from that stand point. The tone, examples, and overall design is lovely and fun.I highly recommended it!
