Business Analysis Agility: Delivering Value, Not Just Software

Description:

Agile business analysis, agile development. Now you can have both.Business Analysis Agility, written by two of the most renowned experts in the BA field, shows you a modern, more nimble approach to delivering solutions that precisely match the real needs of the customers.
The book shows you how to:
  • Make agile development better
  • Make business analysis better
  • Solve the right problem -- get the right result
  • Don't waste time on things nobody will use
  • Integrate business analyst with agile development
Despite our technological advances, the biggest problem is still the human one: how to correctly understand the customer's real problem, and how to ensure that your solution is correctly solving that problem.
  • Finding the customer or user segments, and which of them yields the best, and the earliest value
  • Using value propositions to uncover the real needs of the customers
  • Using safe-to-fail probes to ensure that any proposed solution solves the right problem and delivers the right value.
  • Deploying an iterative approach to discovering the real problem, and progressively feeding the right stories to the delivery activity.
  • Understanding that by discovering the right needs and solving the right problem you deliver real value to your customer and your sponsor.
  • Doing all this quickly
The Robertsons' approach to analytical thinking is crucial to anyone who wants to build better software in agile environments: analysts, developers, team leads, project managers, software architects, and other team members and stakeholders at most levels of experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very relevant, informative AND written to read

    r. · April 23, 2020

The authors know this subject in a very practical way and present it in the same fashion. Lots of simple easy to understand diagrams provide a window of light into each topic. Everyone seems to address Agile BA differently. Even the guys that are creating IIBA training present(ed) it differently outside of sanctioned material. I keep looking for true standards to review but outside of the Agile extension, nothing actually aligns perfectly with the Agile extension. That's my only let down. But I guess that means it reflects the current landscape vs the IIBA vision. So on the other hand, I was eventually comforted in my reading to see that the author advocates what has proven useful in practical experience. And the book is true to its name. It shows you how to take the best path to solve the real issue to make a real difference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real-world, experiment-based agile approach to requirements

    J.R. · May 17, 2019

Too many agile requirements efforts look a lot like waterfall: We supposedly know the problem we have to solve. Now, all we need are the requirements, written as stories, and we're all set, right? No, not in a million years. This book builds on Gottesdiener's "Discover to Deliver" and Patton's "User Story Mapping." Both those books talk about iterating over the planning and requirements. This book specifically talks about safe-to-fail probes. Note the wording. Not just safe-to-fail, but probes. (I did a little happy dance with that.)Some of the gems:- "Problems have a way of disguising themselves." Oh yes. Without probes/experiments, it's impossible to understand the real problem.- The ideas about customer segments, a collection of people who share the same need.- "Think of a constraint as a design decision you do not get to make." (My $02: Sometimes, these constraints free us to find more and varied solutions.)- "Try not to write "I want" when writing stories. Why? Because it assumes a solution. If you are supposed to write stories or otherwise elicit requirements for your agile project, read this book. You will create real stories with depth, the kind of stories your customers will love.I received a copy of this book from the publisher for review purposes. You might notice I only review books I like. I loved this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book!

I've known James' and Suzanne's works for many years and read their Mastering Requirements ... before. I admire their practical approach in solution building and they've done a great job in this book too. Having over 45 years of experience in the field, there are few areas that I could suggest for improvements mostly on the examples used.

Get a solid Foundation in your Business Analysis Career

This is the best book I have read so far on business analysis. I would recommend this material for every business analyst who may have entered the Business Analysis profession from a technical perspective i.e knowing how to do the conventional business analysis job (capturing solution requirements) rather than, understanding the real need, solving the real problem and adding real value to the business and/or the customer. The content of the book has opened my eyes to many opportunities to add real value to businesses and organisations as I switch from a PMO career to Business Analysis. The book has reinforced my confidence that I can build a successful career in business analysis and I hope to become a Business Analyst consultant one day. Thanks James and Suzanne for taking the time to write this book.
