Computer Vision: Principles, Algorithms, Applications, Learning

Description:

Computer Vision: Principles, Algorithms, Applications, Learning (previously entitled Computer and Machine Vision) clearly and systematically presents the basic methodology of computer vision, covering the essential elements of the theory while emphasizing algorithmic and practical design constraints. This fully revised fifth edition has brought in more of the concepts and applications of computer vision, making it a very comprehensive and up-to-date text suitable for undergraduate and graduate students, researchers and R&D engineers working in this vibrant subject.

  • Three new chapters on Machine Learning emphasise the way the subject has been developing; Two chapters cover Basic Classification Concepts and Probabilistic Models; and the The third covers the principles of Deep Learning Networks and shows their impact on computer vision, reflected in a new chapter Face Detection and Recognition.
  • A new chapter on Object Segmentation and Shape Models reflects the methodology of machine learning and gives practical demonstrations of its application.
  • In-depth discussions have been included on geometric transformations, the EM algorithm, boosting, semantic segmentation, face frontalisation, RNNs and other key topics.
  • Examples and applications―including the location of biscuits, foreign bodies, faces, eyes, road lanes, surveillance, vehicles and pedestrians―give the ‘ins and outs’ of developing real-world vision systems, showing the realities of practical implementation.
  • Necessary mathematics and essential theory are made approachable by careful explanations and well-illustrated examples.
  • The ‘recent developments’ sections included in each chapter aim to bring students and practitioners up to date with this fast-moving subject.
  • Tailored programming examples―code, methods, illustrations, tasks, hints and solutions (mainly involving MATLAB and C++)

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive introduction to computer vision

S.E. · August 23, 2021

The state of the art for computer vision has undergone a revolution in the past 10 years or so. However, this 2018 edition of Davies book is surprisingly up to date.As a textbook Computer Vison provides a wide selection of topics an instructor can choose from. The coverage ranges from classical CV subjects like filters and morphology to more current methods involving deep learning. These topics are nicely divided into sections, Low Level, Intermediate Level, and Advanced. The advance topics include a good introduction to both shallow and deep machine learning, and Vison and Motion. The writing is outstandingly clear. The mathematics is kept to a minimum, which can be both a positive and a negative at the same time, depending on the course. Davies includes many useful comments on applications of machine learning, drawn from his extensive experience. As a self-study book, Computer Vision is a good starting point for understanding the theory. The level of math and the writing style make this book accessible to most beginners with college level math education. There are many cook-book style CV books available, but if one does not understand the theory you just end up pulling levers on a machine you do not understand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Topic is not for beginners

Wow, this book is better than expected. It is a huge book!! But it is a delight as a reference book.

5.0 out of 5 stars approachable presentation that doesn't shy away from the details

J.H. · February 16, 2023

This book provide an excellent overview of computer vision. The style is approachable, but the content doesn't shy away from the details needed to truly gain an understanding of the techniques discussed.

Print quality not acceptable for a book on computer vision.

K. · April 22, 2018

The content is great, ranging from classic computer vision techniques to deep learning. Would deserve five stars but the print quality is too cheap for the price. Shame on the publisher.
