5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book; But the last Chapter is Missing
Trey Gowdy and coauthor Christopher Greyson have written a very suspenseful and pretty unique murder mystery. I like the characters and read where Gowdy says: "Yes Mam" in the novel, just like he does on TV. The best thing I can applaud him on is that he designed this whole story, with using profanity; as so many others do. I enjoyed this book immensely and like his style of writing. The author's certainly keep the reader guessing right up to the end. I do think the book ended prematurely and would have liked to have some follow up on what Bones revealed in chapter 88. Also, a postscript would have been nice. But, I presume my concerns will be answered in a sequel. Bottom line: 5 solid stars!
5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting, powerful, and a real cliffhanger until the last page!
Suspenseful and intriguing, this book grabs your attention and holds tight from page 1 to page 275. Trey Gowdy has created a masterpiece. He pays careful attention to details, character development and interactions, and sub plots that build to a crescendo of unexpected revelations. There are hints of a sequel…I want to be first on the waiting list. Can’t wait to find out what happens next!
4.0 out of 5 stars Page turner!
I really enjoyed reading this book. The characters were interesting and it kept me guessing with all the plot twists. My only complaint is the ending - it left me hanging! Now I need the sequel to resolve my questions
5.0 out of 5 stars Good Story in Familiar Haunts
I don’t know Trey Gowdy but we’ve known some of the same haunts. Trey’s novel, The Color of Death, takes place in South Carolina counties we both know—Spartanburg and Greenville. What’s more, I was a Summary Court Judge in Greenville County from 2006 until 2019 and one of the municipal judges for Greer, which sits in both Greenville and Spartanburg Counties. We have even more in common. I am also an author, having published almost two dozen books available internationally. So I was interested in reading Gowdy’s latest novel for any number of reasons. Perhaps we’ll meet some day.The Color of Death is a brief novel, well told, about a murdered hairdresser and a few people who make good suspects. It has the typical, voluminous, rapidly revealed denouement at the end, unveiling the true killer, which frankly was no surprise to me. But overall it is a satisfying read.My chief negative about the book isn’t something many people would share, just judges. A judge in the novel is one of the chief suspects for the murder, and he’s a philandering judge to boot. When I watch TV and see how many cop and lawyer shows there are featuring judges who are adulterers, fornicators, on the take or worse, I’m a bit peeved because I don’t think the judiciary is just littered with bad characters. The law profession, either, in spite of how many lawyer jokes there are.The characters in the book are drawn well; none is two dimensional. The real places were all familiar to me and made the story come alive a bit more than usual. I know The Junction restaurant well. It has often been on my motorcycle route from Greer to points north, out of South Carolina. You will enjoy The Color of Death. Perhaps especially if you’re a South Carolinian. It’s an easy read and engaging.
5.0 out of 5 stars My own prejudices almost kept me from this book; glad they didn't!
I was notified of the book because I follow Christopher Greyson, but when I read up on the primary author, I was hesitant. I wouldn't fit well with a certain political bent and didn't want to have to go there. However, I read a few early reviews and Christopher himself said in an interview that he and the author didn't talk politics their whole time working together. I decided to give it a try. I am so thankful I did. I think we have an absolutely brilliant new author on the scene and am looking forward to an obvious sequel. This book was written with intelligence, knowledge, and experience, and then crafted into a superb storyline. The other real treat is the narrator of the Audible version. He sounds like Matthew McConaughey and does multiple voices perfectly. I did notice that he pronounced a lot of words in the European/British way and only that made me not surprised to hir his clearly British accent at the end. Good job!!
5.0 out of 5 stars I could not put it down
I was very curious about what the writing style of Trey Gowdy would be like. I was not disappointed. His courtroom and prosecutorial expertise, combined with a compelling writing style, made this a wonderful read. I loved the different layers of storylines in the book. While the ending resolved the primary story with interesting twists, it also left open the opportunity for a second book. Loved it!
5.0 out of 5 stars good legal drama
It had an interesting plot. The characters were pretty well developed. Overall a good read. The ending leaves you wanting more.
4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining read but not as spectacular as reviewers claim
An entertaining detective and courtroom fictional story about murder and its intrigue. Even though the murder occurs within the first few pages I did not guess the perp identity until it was revealed at the end. The book in general was entertaining to read over a few days in piecemeal without losing the threat of the plot. There were no boring sections. Just a mild warning to not be misled by the glowing reviews on the jacket cover. While I'm a fan of Trey Gowdy, all the reviewers were his close friends and FOX colleagues and were rather favorably biased.
Review of Color of Death
Excellent book ! Reveals a lot about the personal battles fought in the characters' lives as well as the complexities in the legal system. The plot has many twists and turns and at the end gives us some unexpected surprises that kind of kick our prejudices and stereotypes in the butt
