"Win the Inside Game is a wise, entertaining book that makes the excellent case that winning is more about unshackling ourselves from our expectations and knee-jerk defensiveness than it is finding minuscule competitive edges and flavor-of-the-month performance hacks. Magness is a wonderful guide, bringing big ideas back to earth by illustrating them with his own experiences as an elite athlete, coach, and writer. Highly recommended!" — Adam Alter, New York Times-bestselling author of Anatomy of a Breakthrough
"If you feel like you're constantly chasing success without ever getting anywhere, you need this book. Packed with relatable stories and science-backed principles, Win the Inside Game is an essential guide for learning how to build a healthy and personally meaningful life. Magness gives clear, practical advice for how to stop simply surviving and start thriving." — Liz Fosslien and Mollie Duffy, co-authors of the bestsellers No Hard Feelings and Big Feelings
"Win the Inside Game is a breath of fresh air that teaches how to shift the focus from external achievements to inner fulfillment. It’s an essential read for anyone interested in self-discovery and meaningful success." — Amy Morin, author of 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do
"Nobody distills the hidden principles of high performance better than Steve Magness. But Win the Inside Game isn’t just about achieving success; it’s about finding happiness along the way, which is far more important." — Alex Hutchinson, author of Endure
"Magness is an accomplished athlete and coach, and Win the Inside Game has much to offer those seeking tips on improving their competitive performance. But the principles Steve outlines in the book aren’t just a foundation for winning—they’re a formula for living a more balanced, satisfying life in every realm. Learned through real experience, Steve’s advice is generous, practical, wise, and most importantly, attainable. In Win the Inside Game, he shows readers how to achieve success by focusing on the things that truly matter." — Christie Aschwanden, New York Times-bestselling author of Good To Go
"Win the Inside Game is a propulsive tour of how modern life—from credit reports to TikTok—has left us in a perpetual state of defensiveness. Magness deftly guides the reader in how to break out of the rut of feeling threatened and chase their biggest goals with vigor." — David Epstein, author of Range and The Sports Gene

5.0 out of 5 stars New tools for your toolkit
Great read, both those already familiar with Steve’s work and those who are new to it. It mixes deep dives into the science behind the psychology of resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity while mixing in Steve’s story and others to help reinforce the point.
5.0 out of 5 stars Found this book at just the right time
Win the Inside Game by Steve Magness landed in my hands right as I was preparing for a major life transition. While I still felt the discomfort of change, this book helped me keep taking the next step. It grounded me in my values, reminded me of who I am and what I’m pursuing, and gave me tools to move forward with clarity instead of fear. His insights helped me regulate my nervous system and stay steady through uncertainty. It’s a book I’ll return to when I need to recenter and remember what real resilience looks like.
5.0 out of 5 stars Unravel your self sabotage
The book contains great antidotal and research based science on how to break out of our, or at least my, abilitie to self sabotage, and focus on my pursuits less encumbered by fear of failure. Great, useful read.
4.0 out of 5 stars The Inside Game
Early into the book but thoroughly enjoying it so far. This might be Steve's best one yet! Looking forward to getting a few free days over the weekend, some good coffee, and really getting stuck in to the subject matter
5.0 out of 5 stars Invest in yourself
A timely book that helps the reader to navigate a world that seems more and more influenced by the attention economy within our "smart" devices. Magness's ability to write in a style that the everyday person can comprehend while still appealing to the literary preferences of someone with a scientific background is impressive and captivating. Well worth the read and the investment in yourself.
5.0 out of 5 stars Super valuable for coaches, athletes, parents, teachers, and others
Magness does a great job of weaving together science and research findings with practical applications and experiences from his past. As high school coach I found myself regularly stopping to note down things that would be great to share with my kids, incorporate into our team practices, or adjust the way I support and communicate with the kids (and parents) on our team. I found this book really helpful as a coach, but the practical applications here are super valuable for any coach, athlete, parent, teacher, or really anyone looking to live in a healthier, more purposeful way in our current societal context.
5.0 out of 5 stars Be your best without the fru - fru!
Excellent read! The author, Steve Magness, works in his personal experiences and those of others to bring documented research to life. Page after page were filled with thought provoking insights in managing the hurdles life brings and striving for the day to day life you want. He convinces the reader you can make your life want it to be. Powerful and practical!
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read
Have enjoyed both of Steve’s recent books. Enjoy his writing style - a gentle coach comes off in the way he writes and he is able to blend his expertise in athletic training and apply it to all arenas of life seamlessly.
Common sense science
A much needed corrective to the mass of Insta bro gibberish masquerading as evidence in the field of high performance...
He Does it Again!
Steve knocked it out of the park with this one. I just finished it and enjoyed it the whole way through! You get the best of both worlds in this one — a bit more personal than his previous books as he gets into the intricacies of whistleblowing but still the same evidence-based exploration into a timeless and important subject. Couldn’t recommend it enough, I will be gifting this one to friends and family ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
