National Bestseller

“Change is inevitable. Will you let this reality destabilize or empower you? Brad Stulberg’s immensely wise and timely book provides a powerful roadmap for a tumultuous world.”—Cal Newport, New York Times bestselling author of Digital Minimalism and Deep Work

A revelatory book on rethinking change, developing resilience, and creating a rugged and flexible mindset amidst life’s intensifying flux from writer, coach, and bestselling author of The Practice of Groundedness.

From social disruptions like economic recessions, pandemics, and new technologies to individual disruptions like getting married or divorced, illness and injury, career transitions, and becoming a parent, we undergo change and transformation—both good and bad—regularly. Change is not the exception. It’s the rule. Yet we endlessly fight it, often viewing it as a threat to our stability and sense of self.

Master of Change flips this script on its head and offers a path for finding strength and stability amid the chaos of life. Brad Stulberg draws on cutting-edge science, ancient wisdom, and daily practice to help you develop a mindset called rugged flexibility, as well as habits and practices to implement it. He reveals:

  • How to be in conversation with change instead of it happening to you
  • The importance of expectations
  • Why cultivating a rugged yet flexible sense of self is key to a strong identity
  • How to stay consistent on the things that matter to you most
  • How to take productive action during uncertainty
  • The power of embracing tragic optimism

Stulberg reshapes our entire perception of change and shows us how to use it to grow—helping us to be better, stronger, and wiser than we were before.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Change is inevitable. Will you let this reality destabilize or empower you? Brad Stulberg's immensely wise and timely book provides a powerful roadmap for a tumultuous world." — Cal Newport, New York Times bestselling author of Digital Minimalism and Deep Work

“According to the Greek philosopher Heraclitus, you can’t step in the same river twice. Brad Stulberg makes you wonder why you’d want to. Change is inevitable, but if we learn to struggle with it, not against it, we become like rivers ourselves: fluid, flexible, yet ruggedly defined. This book speaks to the twists and eddies in our lives with uncommon warmth and wisdom.”  — Kieran Setiya, author of Life Is Hard: How Philosophy Can Help Us Find Our Way

"Fantastic, wide-ranging, and deeply profound, Brad Stulberg's new book is a reminder that the most important two-word summary of life is: everything changes. In a world of constant economic, technological, and political upheaval, it's more important than ever that we learn to face life with tragic optimism—to continuously rediscover meaning and strength despite life's inevitable challenges and suffering. Stulberg's book is an exceptional guide to this critical virtue. A must read." — Derek Thompson, staff writer at The Atlantic, host of Plain English podcast, author of national bestseller Hit Makers

Master of Change challenges our inherent resistance to change, providing carefully researched suggestions that will help you embrace and rise to meet it. Stulberg’s thoughtful book is a delight to read and will arm you with valuable wisdom for navigating life’s unexpected plot twists.“  — Katy Milkman, New York Times bestselling author of How to Change

"Uncertainty and changeability are the reality for us all. This is a fascinating and inspiring field guide not merely to 'coping with' this reality, but plunging into it – even becoming one with it – so as to grow and flourish here and now." — Oliver Burkeman, author of Four Thousand Weeks

"In a world where constant flux is the only certainty, the ability to reframe and adapt to change — rather than resist or deny it — is essential to wellbeing. In Master of Change, Brad Stulberg wields his characteristically deft mix of science and philosophy to provide a blueprint for embracing the unexpected." — David Epstein, author of Range

5.0 out of 5 stars Rugged Flexibility

Honestly, I wish this book was written years earlier, at a time in my life where the need to be in control caused burnout, fatigue, OCD, and panic attacks. As someone drawn to order, control, and predictable outcomes, I have read numerous books over the years telling me to "enjoy the process", and my response was always something along the lines of, "easier said than done!" It just wasn't practical for me. Stulberg managed to make this book relatable and approachable through stories, research, and his concept of “rugged flexibility” — the ability to stay grounded and resilient while adapting to life's uncertainties. It’s a mindset shift that feels especially relevant for those of us who pride ourselves on being in control, only to find ourselves out-of-control when things don't go as planned. This is not a book on toxic positivity, or faking ourselves into contentment. It is more about behavioral activation, or getting unstuck by taking the next step forward. It offers both the permission and the tools to stop resisting change and start moving with it. A must-read for anyone seeking fulfillment and peace in an unpredictable world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grateful for the book and for Brad's approach to change

R.R. · December 16, 2024

3 years ago, I had a spinal cord injury and a near-death incident, where they said the chances of walking were pretty slim...long story short...5 weeks later I was on the phone working and after 172 weeks of training (and unbelievable support from my family and wicked friends), I am back riding, lifting weights and playing with my grandson and running my businesses! HOWEVER, I had in my mind and as a goal, that I would be back to the same reality / normal as before my accident...and when I realized that, despite all the progress and work I had made (I am 80% back to what I was before), I would never be back to the way I was before...I hit a wall...until I read your book... It helped me so much to accept and enjoy my "new reality" to the max ;-) For that, I am immensely and forever grateful!I bought the books for friends going through cancer, to my colleagues and employees, and recommended the book to anyone going through life in general...A MUST read...like all the B. Stulberg's books!

5.0 out of 5 stars More Accepting and Adapting to Change rather than Embracing it

S.B. · February 20, 2024

I got this book thinking that it would be about change in organizations and that it would be helpful in my work on improving processes. It’s about that, but it’s primarily about dealing with change personally. Since organizations are composed of people, how people handle change informs the larger picture; understanding this can help you overcome barriers to change on a larger scale. But individuals are at the center here. While a theme of the book is how to use action to get past the energy-draining impacts that change can have, Stulberg consistently points out that forced positivity is not the answer to anything. He emphasizes reflection and embracing feelings of sadness and loss, with an understanding that you can move forward. Each chapter ends with a summary of key points, and the book ends with some key questions to ask and actions to take to help you handle change more effectively.]At the organizational and personal level, change is constant. Accepting and adapting to it is essential. This is not a book about embracing change per se, though that’s part of it, but acknowledging the inevitability of change, understanding that it’s a path to growth, and accepting that this path forward can also include difficulties, which you need to accept and embrace as well. This quick-to-read and easy-to-review book is worth a look if you want a guide to being more resilient and want to learn how to make the most of the inevitable change around you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read for navigating our ever-changing lives!

T.H. · January 14, 2025

Change is simply a part of life, yet most of us react negatively when it happens. This book is a great read from beginning to end, and really helps educate the reader about how to process and respond to change in a measured, healthy manner, instead of reacting impulsively in the moment.I've found the principals in this book of great use over the past year, and can't recommend it enough!

“Master of Change” is one of the best books of 2023

J.S. · September 19, 2023

I pre-ordered Brad Stulberg’s “Master of Change” because I was looking for some guidance on how to navigate change. You see, I am undergoing transformative change with the loss of my parents.Mr. Stulberg’s book has been extremely helpful. A major takeaway for me was the author’s discussion of core values. I’ve thought about my core values before, but “Master of Change” encouraged me to put pen-to-paper and write down my core values. Knowing your core values is a helpful anchor in guiding you toward doing things that are most meaningful to you.The author’s 10 tools at the conclusion of the book is a nice wrap-up of all the author’s insights. All of them resonate with me. After core values, the next big idea from the book for me is non-dual thinking. Non-dual thinking is something that I’ll be thinking about for a very long time.“Master of Change” is comprehensive in the treatment of navigating change. The author draws from many disciplines like sports, psychology, Stoicism and Buddhist philosophy. I feel grateful that Mr. Stulberg did all the research and presents his findings in interesting ways for the reader to understand. Mr. Stulberg reminds me of a sherpa when it comes to helping his readers in navigating change.Mr. Stulberg’s “Master of Change” is one of the best books that I’ve read in 2023. If you are looking for a book on how to navigate change, this book is for you. I highly recommend it.
