To all the world, Alizeh is a disposable servant, not the long-lost heir to an ancient Jinn kingdom forced to hide in plain sight.

The crown prince, Kamran, has heard the prophecies foretelling the death of his king. But he could never have imagined that the servant girl with the strange eyes, the girl he can’t put out of his mind, would one day soon uproot his kingdom—and the world.

Perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas, Leigh Bardugo, and Sabaa Tahir, this is the explosive first book in a new romantasy series from the New York Times bestselling and National Book Award–nominated author Tahereh Mafi.

“In a tale as exquisitely crafted as one of Alizeh’s own garments, Mafi weaves a spell of destiny and danger, forbidden love and courtly intrigue, magic and revolution.” —Cassandra Clare, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Last Hours

This Woven Kingdom is an exquisite fantasy. Rich with clever prose, delicious twists, and breathtaking world building. Prepare to be destroyed—this one will wrench at your heart and make it pound, and in the end it will leave you entirely speechless.” —Stephanie Garber, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Caraval series

"This story is so magical and transportive that I fully expected the book would know the moment I'd finished — within hours, no less — and promptly unravel into a pile of jewels and silks in my hands. Mafi's diamond-bright lyrical voice weaves a tale that is gilded in magic, laced with subterfuge, adorned with the brocade of a tortuous romance, and richly embroidered with Persian mythology. I cannot wait for more." - Roshani Chokshi, New York Times bestselling author of The Gilded Wolves

“Fast-paced action scenes convey imminent danger vividly. Part cautionary tale, part juicy love story, this will appeal to action and adventure fans.” - Kirkus Reviews

“Tahereh Mafi’s bold, inventive prose crackles with raw emotion. A thrilling, high-stakes saga of self-discovery and forbidden love, the Shatter Me series is a must-read for fans of dystopian young adult literature-or any literature!” - Ransom Riggs, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children

"Mafi follows her National Book Award–longlisted A Very Large Expanse of Sea (2018) with another contemporary young adult novel of striking emotional intensity. Complex and introspective Shadi details her experiences with the specific challenges of Islamaphobia and with more general issues. With masterfully compelling prose, this surprises and ensnares, leading readers to an inevitable but gripping climax. Though there's a feverous feeling throughout the book, there's also formidable nuance in Shadi’s paradoxical and contradictory thought patterns, which add even more to the blunt realism. Emotional implications of great magnitude and stakes that could not feel higher. A bluntly powerful read that shouldn't be missed."

-
ALA Booklist (starred review)

"Mafi confronts issues of mental health, suicidality, racism, and self-love in ways that will leave readers reacting viscerally and powerfully. Reading this novel is like being dropped straight into the everyday lives of a Muslim family in post–9/11 America. A simply real story, devoid of clichés, that will leave an indelible mark."

-
Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"Mafi’s prose is compelling and unsentimental, giving voice to the universal angst common among teenagers. She handles the timely issues of race and discrimination with skill, highlighting the inaccuracies so often ascribed to individuals of the Muslim faith. Her well-developed characters jump off the page, especially during romantic moments. An emotional, important look at an American Muslim teen’s experience."

“Mafi seamlessly works in questions of identity, race and Islamophobia [and] taps into the fierceness and passion of first love. The novel’s bittersweet ending will ring true for most, and break the hearts of many.” - New York Times Book Review

“Tahereh Mafi soars to new heights with A Very Large Expanse Of Sea. A singular new novel from one of YA’s brightest voices.” - Entertainment Weekly

“A masterfully constructed novel. The characters are beautifully developed and authentic. [Shirin’s] voice is fierce, funny, vulnerable, and honest. Mafi’s novel challenges readers to ponder their own beliefs, assumptions, and actions. And, also reminds us of the captivating bliss of first love.” - Nerdy Book Club

PRAISE FOR THE Shatter Me SERIES: “Written with precision and a sense of urgency, each chapter a strobe light–like moment in the lives of the teens trying to save their world. The prose moves readers swiftly from crisis to crisis.” - Booklist Online

“Mafi tackles the life of an American Muslim teenager in the wake of 9/11 in this visceral, honest novel. Shirin’s sharp, raw voice narrates, and her captivating story opens a window onto a different narrative than the one typically dominating the airwaves after 9/11. Mafi excels at highlighting the relationships between her characters. Rich characters, incisive writing, and a powerful story will thrill readers.” - ALA Booklist (starred review)

“[Mafi’s] writing is nuanced and smart. Shirin and Ocean’s interactions are palpable, and the discussions and exploration of what it means to be a Muslim in politically charged America will resonate with many teens and will be enlightening for some.” - School Library Journal (starred review)

“Mafi gives vivid voice to an underrepresented audience in this story. The teens’ rich personalities, desires, powerful emotions and struggles come together to form a memorable work. An outstanding contemporary novel, A Very Large Expanse of Sea is a realistic love story that provides a much-needed perspective.” - Shelf Awareness (starred review)

“This gripping political romance takes readers into the life of a young Muslim woman trying to navigate high school with the entire world attacking her right to her body and her faith. A moving coming-of-age narrative about the viciousness of Islamophobia and the unwavering power of love in post-9/11 America.” - Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“A contemporary love story with a heartbreakingly realistic portrait of one post-9/11 Muslim life in the United States. Mafi openly addresses many common misconceptions about Islam and what it means to be a woman of color in the face of racism, showing how differences can be applauded, not feared.” - Publishers Weekly

“This story holds a mirror up to the ugly reality of religious bigotry. That disturbing truth, however, is offset by a portrait of a strong Muslim teen girl who defies stereotypes on multiple levels. Shirin insists on her right to approach life on her own clear-eyed terms, granting compassion to the deserving and an education to those who need it.” - Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books

Reads like an old-fashioned fairytale!

D.H.S.L. · March 7, 2022

Alizeh is alone in the world, hiding her true identity and living as an overworked servant. She’s Jinn and has ice in her veins. She’ll be in danger if anyone discovers who she is because she’ll be seen as a threat to the human king. Kamran, the young prince, sees Alizeh help a homeless thief and is intrigued by her actions. The more he observes her, the more curious he becomes. The king, Kamran’s grandfather, sees that the prince is interested in the girl so he explains that their kingdom’s peace is at stake if they let her live. He orders Kamran to put her to death and then be ready to attend the planned ball the next evening and choose a wife. Alizeh works as a seamstress after her servant hours are finished for the day. She’s helping Miss Huda with several gowns. Alizeh is exhausted and after she leaves Miss Huda, she’s attacked by six men. She warns them but they laugh at her so she subdues them with the only weapons she has available, seamstress needles and scissors. Afterwards, she’s approached by a man who has been searching for her and wanting to protect her from harm. He sees the attack and knows she can protect herself. He offers her assistance and safety. He will take her away at the ball the following night. He also gives her a nosta, a rare orb that warms in your hand when the truth is told and chills like ice when a lie appears. This man’s identity is a surprising twist to the story! Huzzah!!!The action takes over and another twist is revealed, ending the book with a bang! I can hardly stand to wait for the next book! Elegant storytelling, 5 stars!

Jinn, the Devil, and warring kingdoms, oh my!

L./.@. · February 1, 2022

What a great start to this new Persian-inspired fantasy series! I was hooked in chapter 1. By chapter 2, I was entranced. Between mention of what seemed like fire magic, the shadowy and mysterious appearance of the devil and an origin story all in the first 3 chapters — I knew this was going to be a story I would devour and crave more of!Alizeh, long-lost heir to an ancient Jinn kingdom, is forced to live her life on the run and hide in plain sight when her path unexpectedly collides with Kamran, crown prince and heir to the reigning kingdom of Ardunia. Their distinctly divided lives can't help but keep crossing as rumors swirl and prophesy Ardunia's downfall - with them both at the center of it all. There's a swoony forbidden romance, royalty in hiding, deception, secrets and sinister plots. And oooh the twists!! It's heavily character driven but with just enough plot development and enchanting mysteriousness to keep you turning page after page! I'm really looking forward to the next installment. And that ending!!! Beware the cliffhanger.READ THIS IF YOU LIKE:— lush, magical fantasy worlds— Persian mythology— dual POVs— jinn x ancient kingdoms— fire? ice? magic— origin stories— warring kingdoms x courtly intrigue— forbidden love x royalty in hiding— prophecies x foretellings— woven things x fireflies— body positivity— magical artifacts— DRAGONSPossible Content Warnings: self harm, depression/hopelessness, fear of the dark, grief, suicide attempt, suicidal thoughtsThank you to the publisher for my advanced galley copy!

Dust cover messed up during shipping

Fantasy escapism at its finest

A.@.L.W. · March 13, 2022

I’ll be the first to admit that my favorite genre the past several years has been young adult fantasy romance. There is just something about it that, when done well, absolutely hits for me. The problem is that recently the books being pushed under that genre just haven’t worked for me. They’ve felt hollow and soulless. This Woven Kingdom was one of my most anticipated releases for 2022 and I was afraid I would have the same issues with it.I should never have doubted Tahereh Mafi. This book is absolutely everything I love in young adult fantasy romance. We have our female protagonist, Alizeh. Alizeh works as a servant in a prominent household and tries only to keep to herself, do good work, and be left alone. Of course, that is not how it turns out otherwise it would be a very boring book. She keeps finding herself hunted and in trouble no matter how hard she tries to keep her head down. The poor girl just wants to live in peace but peace is not something she is going to find.Instead we are in a world of Jinn and magic that sits on the brink of war with an ailing leader at the helm and, obviously, our budding love interest is the prince of that realm. Kamran is an interesting fellow in a “took many hormones, too little space to put them” kind of way and he only has eyes for the mysterious Alizeh. He manages to be both a hard edged, murderous creature and a big ole soft dumplin. Honestly, he seems a little confused and out of sorts about what he wants in life and is struggling to make sense of the difference between his place and what he wants for himself.Of course there are enigmatic shadowy figures that you just know are going to have a bigger part in the story later but there is some solid groundwork laid for those characters here in the first book of this trilogy. Especially Cyrus. I cannot wait for more Cyrus!Overall, I absolutely devoured this book. It had the romance, magic, and high stakes that I love in the genre. I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 for a couple reasons. One being that that world building wasn’t very fleshed out at all but I feel like we will likely get more information on that in the next book. Also there were a couple of characters that took up considerable page space but ended up being little more than window dressing which I found a little frustrating. But, I loved this story and will be scooping up the next book in the trilogy the MOMENT that it comes out.

Well written

A. · August 6, 2025

A most educated author with a beautiful style of writing. The story felt historic as well as fantastical. I loved the careful thought behind the laughs of the characters. The story itself was well spun. Looking forward to book 2

Loved it

Entertaining

S. · December 6, 2025

I love it. Especially the end and a new character really intriguing and interesting.

Tantalising narrative and interesting characters

C. · February 11, 2023

Not perfect but the protagonist (and even the few key characters) are well drawn but there are too few to fully support the narrative. The decriptions are reasonable but hardly fully drawn or deeply evocative, but they do find a certain neat and attaractive balance. The lost princess theme is very well done, detailed and fully drawn; the confused general-prince less so; The underworked 'minister' (more like an equerry or ADC) was very sketchy. There are few other characters that get any colour at all. The world building was never more than a work in progress.Princes and Ministers running their own errands, following and staking out suspects. The King acting on thin assumptions, personally supervising hired mercenraries in a bungled palace arrest. Sloppy dialogue and procedure in a national defence exectutive meeting. Sketchy Ball descriptions. These are weaknesses but I was grippedRecommended (4.5 stars) at £2.99. The sequel at £5 however, I am not sure to buy

This Woven Kingdom is an exquisite fantasy. Rich with clever prose, delicious twists, and breathtaking world building. Prepare to be destroyed—this one will wrench at your heart and make it pound, and in the end it will leave you entirely speechless.”

Booklist

-
School Library Journal (starred review)

"Mafi clearly and movingly illustrates how grief can escalate uncontrollably and seep into every facet of life."

“Cerebral, impassioned, and zeitgeisty... Mafi’s sincerity stands out in full force in her craftsmanship. A Very Large Expanse of Sea is timeless in its themes and will continue to affect readers, months after they’ve closed the book.” - NPR

A Very Large Expanse of Sea is the love story you need to read next.” - Teen Vogue

Beautiful writing

This Woven Kingdom is written like a poem, with every word chosen to have utmost meaning and beauty. Truly a joy to read. The story itself also captures the imagination, and I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

Dust cover messed up during shipping

The book itself appears okay, but the pretty dust cover is all bent up and torn from shipping. I'm sad because I got this as a gift for a friend, and it doesn't look very nice.

A most educated author with a beautiful style of writing. The story felt historic as well as fantastical. I loved the careful thought behind the laughs of the characters. The story itself was well spun. Looking forward to book 2

Loved it
