Do the F*cking Work: Lowbrow Advice for High-Level Creativity

Description:

A wake-up call for creatives who need that inspiring kick to finally create the thing they’ve been meaning to make, while celebrating the journey of trying, learning, and failing.

Over the last eight years, Jason Bacher and Brian Buirge of Good F*cking Design Advice (GFDA) have made a name for themselves in the international design community, inspiring creatives, artists, and entrepreneurs with their products, weekly e-mails, and most important, their unorthodox advice about work ethic and the creative process.

Do the F*cking Work is a collection of 100 beautifully packaged pieces that showcase their irreverent advice—inspiration that will help unstick even the most dedicated procrastinators. Covering everything from drinking your morning coffee to handling productive criticism, from embracing failure to rejecting the status quo, their insights upend conventional thinking and teach you to embrace and celebrate the journey of creation—the joy of trying, failing, learning, and sometimes failing again.

To make something good we have to make some mistakes. Bacher and Buirge teach you to embrace the unknown and to f*cking laugh at yourself during the process. There is a method to their madness—a surprising reassurance that is baked into their bluntness. We’re all trying, messing up, and trying again. And there’s joy to be found in that—something we often overlook in our rush to get everything done and get it right the first time.

With personal insights, actionable advice, stylish visuals, and lots of colorful language, Do the F*cking Work will leave you feeling renewed and inspired, and will make you see that the value of work is as much about the process as the outcome.

5.0 out of 5 stars Motivation never came so cheap

D. · January 3, 2020

TL;DR: You deserve this book. It will make you better and it's fun to read.DTFW is full of advice that is both wise to follow and beautiful to look at, and it's all nestled among pages of an engaging story. Reading it was a mix of out-loud laughter and "oh, crap" moments when advice hit a bit too close to home. Make no mistake, this is not feel-good "you can do it!" encouragement--it will challenge you, if you let it. I had to stop and reflect on almost every piece of advice, because it was applicable, it was real, and frankly it hurt a little bit to consider. This one hit me hard:"Stop f'ing around.Stop whoring out your attention to online shopping and cat videos. All those distractions are going to impact your performance, and you're bound to end up with something leaking from your creativity" (page 38).There's more to this one, and text doesn't do it justice, but I *know* I've been doing this lately, and I *know* it's getting in the way of achieving my goals. And apparently, so do Brian, Jason, and Jason, damn them. And they seem to keep knowing, page after page. The tough advice is lightened by hilarious storytelling about the origins and growing pains of the authors' company, which both motivates the advice and makes the book a bit easier to read than page after page of nonstop painful advice would be. As a result, I'm coming away from it with a strong urge to *do things* rather than cry about how everything is hard (even though it is).

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book for Creatives!

Is is my go-to when I'm dealing with days of self-loathing and doubt in my creative endeavors. After reflecting deeply on a few pages over a morning coffee, I often find myself refreshed and ready to get back in to the fight of creating in a world that wants the same thing emulated as long as it brings them the same result. This book has been a big help during this AI depression of mine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what you need to get your ass in gear.

S. · January 10, 2020

I met the authors of this book when we were all speaking at an event for creatives a few years ago. When I saw that they had written a book I ordered it right away. And I am so glad I did.250 pages of BEAUTIFULLY designed, much needed, blunt and to-the-point advice about how to actually get work done. There are so many self-help/advice books out there that hold your hand and make you feel warm and fuzzy. This book is firmly NOT in that camp but in the camp of don't dick around, life is short, you've got too much to contribute to live small.I'm getting another copy for my 13-year-old son who loves motivational talks that challenge him in exactly this way (and no, I don't care about the swearing) because I'm not f*cking giving him mine.Obvi if you have an issue with the f-word this book won't be your jam.Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, true & inspiring

As an aging freelance copywriter with decades of experience working with all kinds of creative teams for all kinds of clients, I recognize and celebrate the mix of smart-assery and earnestness that this book captures--and that characterizes the best we humans have to offer. If you put your heart and soul into your work, while also seeing the absurdity and humor of doing so, while also seeing the necessity of doing so, to keep the trust of your colleagues and your own self respect, this book is for you! Not only did I laugh out loud at the stories, verbal and visual puns, I was inspired. Read it from front to back. Or use the index to zero in on what's most helpful to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars For those who have Kindle version:

Great book! I'm reading everything I can read on creativity, as well as motivation and productivity inherently part of it. This is the simple and inspiring good stuff.I have the Kindle version, which I read from the online Kindle app. After some trial and error with the options, I was able to read even the smallest print by doing two things: I did the "Auto Fit Column (Alt + 3). It's the page format with the three columns and the two arrows on each end, (the last option). Secondly, I increased the page width all the way up. Maybe not ideal, but It works for me!Hope it will work for you, too...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book for [expletive deleted] inspiration...

M.R. · February 4, 2021

You want the book... Read it! It one of those for getting folks off their "posterior" and getting moving! If you find the read challenging or frustrating, good! Use the energy to get moving forward and take that first irreverent step towards creating! It's not some "self help" book; it's one that's frank and to the point, and does it with the design approach GFDA is known for. I got the original poster from the authors and framed it. It was banished from my work offices at AT&T, NTT Japan, Verizon, and has a place of honor in my home office, where it's in sight of the video conference camera...(Dear Bolo, I cleaned up all the profanity, can I now have my review of this book published?)

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for designers

l. · January 4, 2020

Love this book! Hard-hitting advice delivered with thoughtfulness and care. Aside from a few design-specific references, this book is relevant to any creative thinker. The layouts are interesting and thought-provoking and while this book can (& should) be read as a whole story, it can also be kept as a coffee table book to be read one piece of advice at a time. Would make a perfect gift for any creative friend or a gift to yourself for encouragement, motivation and tough love.

Perfectly brutally honest!

j. · August 5, 2021

Love love love this book. It’s so honest and funny that you can’t help but love every page! Definitely worth it 😀

Awesome motivational book.

G.L. · September 6, 2025

Probably one of the best motivational books out there. It does have a brilliant and smart design/layout. Love it.

Perfetto per chi ama il deisgn

A.M. · January 23, 2024

Great design and information

P.M. · March 10, 2024

This book can be read in one week, if you read 1 hour per day. Really love the design and valuable information it has in it. Gonna read multiple times cause you really gotta remind yourself how important to is to work hard.

You can't call that a Kindle version.

M. · December 30, 2019

You've got to be kidding that the kindle version it's just a scan of the print version? It's just impossible to read.
