I just finished reading Southern Man. There were so many twists and turns that I never put it down. Knowing this book was fiction, I saw so many similarities to the insane actions occurring in our world today. An eye-opening must read….
5.0 out of 5 stars What Happened to Greg Isles?
Revision--I wrote this review on August 15, 2025, giving it one star and the critique beneath the dotted line below. This morning (August 16) I read that Isles just died. Now it is clear what was going on as he was finishing the book--he was just unloading everything in his literary quiver because he knew that this was his last chance to say important things. In that context, it is more than a fiction--Isles was checking out and using his book as a vehicle to put forth very valid criticisms in hopes that a few people would come to their senses about what is rapidly going wrong with our country. Good luck, and God speed, Greg. Hope you succeed.(I do hope his publisher will see fit to produce a second edition that takes out all the literary mistakes and contradictions these reviews have illuminated. It would befit a great author who was simply running out of time.)............................................................................................................I am 9% into the Kindle version downloaded in late July 2025. It seems like an editor's first proof. Already a couple of flaws that would not have escaped a 10th grader (e.g., Which arm did Bobby lose in combat and how?). Who was Martine and why was she introduced and killed off already in a mass murder? Is Isles counting on these comments to pick out all the flaws without having to hire a editor?I am going to keep reading, so I may revisit this review and upgrade it later. Or not. If it gets worse, I may just stop reading.
4.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Achievement but Way Too Long
Greg Iles is one of my all-time favorite writers. His picture is on my study wall among other writers who have inspired my own writing. Southern Man is extraordinary -- timely, meticulously researched, atmospheric, and full of engaging characters to love and hate. It has a scary, suspenseful main storyline that will keep readers on the edges of their seats. But that story so often gets buried in this almost 1000 page novel. It's billed as a political "thriller," but the long, long historical backstory passages and repetition bog it down, especially in the first 300 pages or so. It could have been half the length it is and would have been a much better read that still had plenty of room for the backstory and intrigue. It gets a four for Iles' brilliant writing and storytelling.
5.0 out of 5 stars Greg Isles latest
Book was in pretty good condition, considering it is over 900 pages! Decent price and on time delivery.
3.0 out of 5 stars The return of Penn Cage!
I am a huge Greg Iles fan. If he wrote a restaurant menu, I'd buy it and read it. I was looking forward to reading Southern Man.Now that I've read it I am not sure how I feel about it. Parts of it are fantastic. But other parts are just not good. The plot is one of the good parts. There is a mass shooting at a rap concert. In retaliation for the shooting, a couple of civil war plantation homes are burnt to the ground, the country is heading for another Civil War. Did I mention this is taking place in 2024 with the current election front and center.Penn Cage and his daughter Annie are right in the middle of the mess. One of the bad things is that Iles has aged Penn Cage. He is nearly 70 and has lost his leg in a car accident. He is also battling cancer. Both of those are things that have happened to Greg Iles, himself. So I understand why he has Cage go through the same struggles. But it makes it very hard for Penn Cage to be the man of action he once was. Instead Cage spends a lot of the book researching the history of slavery. The other issue I have with the book is the pace. It is very slow paced. If it was maybe 400 pages shorter it would be a much better book. The bottom line is that while Greg Iles is a very good writer this book is probably my least favorite of his. While I will definitely read his next book. I will not be recommending Southern Man to others.
5.0 out of 5 stars Wow
I'm impressed. I read the Natchez trilogy before this. Southern Man is the best Penn Cage book I've read. The storyline is layered, the characters multi dimensional. The variety of perspectives are believable (arguably, spot on) and this chapter presents a realistic view of politics, race family and history that is quiet realistic, possibly even prophetic. This book says what a lot of folk probably do not want to hear, wrapped in a compelling story that is all too possible. Couldn't put it down.
5.0 out of 5 stars A rollercoaster thrill ride!
I actually had to check the date this book was written! So much that it covers is in the news today...from Central American prisons used by the United States..to a famous person who's family passed for white. I could not put it down...Some of it was hard to stomach but I persevered. I loved the historical back story. In fact this book was actually three books in one! A great writer.

The last Book 😕Since he passed away there will be no other one, sadly. I enjoyed it a lot, well written and good story
Exquisite, Breathtaking, Topical, Intelligent Thriller you wont be able to put down!
So after 6 weeks of a wonderful binge read, I’ve finally finished the Penn Cage series culminating with Southern Man book 7 in the series and Greg Iles's latest novel. I have been a fan of Greg since I stumbled on his books in a library years ago, I read all the books and adore his writing style. So I wanted to reread the Penn Cage series again before I read Southern Man, and I am so so glad I did! This is a wonderfully deep series about family, history, politics, and racism and is so topical today. Set in Natchez Mississippi, Gregs home town. He has managed to research and uncover lots of valuable history surrounding the civil rights events and he has incorporated them fictionally into the whole series of books. But in Southern Man, we see that history can very easily repeat itself and the plotline of this 900-plus page thriller is absolutely gripping. Greg’s talent at writing about real civil rights events into fiction and therefore memorialising these terrible events and making them known to a wider audience ( I’m in the UK and we are not taught about American History ) is an exceptional talent.Southern Man is just a simply amazing, utterly page-turning gripping thriller that had me holding my breath and gasping several times as the events unfolded! It’s clear that Penn Cage is based on Greg himself but why the heck not, it makes for a deep and more loveable character! An outstanding read and one that has gone straight into my top 5 this year. Thank you @gregiles for writing even though you’ve been through hell with your health. The Penn Cage series is one of THE all-time greats of American fiction, and I urge you all to read them.I wish you many more years ahead and hope you can keep writing! You Sir are a Legend of fiction!Huge 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Star read!
