How to Be Everything: A Guide for Those Who (Still) Don't Know What They Want to Be When They Grow Up

Description:

What do you want to be when you grow up? It's a familiar question we're all asked as kids. While seemingly harmless, the question has unintended consequences. It can make you feel like you need to choose one job, one passion, one thing to be about. Guess what? You don't.

Having a lot of different interests, projects and curiosities doesn't make you a "jack-of-all-trades, master of none." Your endless curiosity doesn't mean you are broken or flaky. What you are is a multipotentialite: someone with many interests and creative pursuits. And that is actually your biggest strength.

How to Be Everything helps you channel your diverse passions and skills to work for you. Based on her popular TED talk, "Why some of us don't have one true calling", Emilie Wapnick flips the script on conventional career advice. Instead of suggesting that you specialize, choose a niche or accumulate 10,000 hours of practice in a single area, Wapnick provides a practical framework for building a sustainable life around ALL of your passions.
You'll discover:
•  Why your multipotentiality is your biggest strength, especially in today's uncertain job market.
•  How to make a living and structure your work if you have many skills and interests.
•  How to focus on multiple projects and make progress on all of them.
•  How to handle common insecurities such as the fear of not being the best, the guilt associated with losing interest in something you used to love and the challenge of explaining "what you do" to others.

Not fitting neatly into a box can be a beautiful thing.
How to Be Everything teaches you how to design a life, at any age and stage of your career, that allows you to be fully you, and find the kind of work you'll love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it - Very Unique

A.C. · May 30, 2017

This book is awesome! It presents the idea that you don't have to choose a single, linear career path and provides ideas to make a varied, personalized career a reality. It is simple, direct, honest, and the advice can be applied to just about anyone, no matter where you fall on the multipotentialite-specialist spectrum. You will not find these ideas in any other career book (that I have read at least), and as a "multipotentialite" college student I found it immensely useful. It is a much more holistic career book that challenges you to decide what you want your lifestyle to look like - how much money do you really need? Would you rather have a varied job or an easy job that allows you to pursue interests on the side?I would recommend this book especially to high school and college students who are trying to decide their next steps in life, but I could see anyone from middle school to retirement enjoying this book. It is a fast, easy read (very unlike most self-help or career books) and I have found myself referencing back to it multiple times over the past few weeks. If you're on the fence, check out Emilie's TED talk to get an idea of what the book will cover - it is also fantastic, but the book is a little more in depth and has activities to help you brainstorm enjoyable career options.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most valuable books I’ve read in recent years

A. · June 18, 2025

This book is something special. It helped me understand myself and some of my loved ones much better. It also has a lot of practical advice that I’m still about to explore. I always thought that I’m just struggling to find what is that one field that is mine, what is one thing that I want to be “when I grow up”. But it’s actually everything. All of those things that I wanted, that I already tried - all of them are me. And I really love variety at work. This book gave it a name and help me understand myself better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Read with Good Points

D. · June 4, 2017

This book was easy to read and straight to the point. It identified different ways of living a life of plurality and how to devote yourself to living a life of variety despite negative feedback from yourself and others. Definitely had some great takeaways, and definitely a book to read more than once.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book

A.S.L. · August 15, 2024

This is a great book for perspective on the gift/curse of multi-disciplinary interests. Those of us who commit to a field of work, then move on to another area of interest are not indecisive; we have more of a kalaidoscopic outlook towards life and work. This book helps to make sense of the intellectual noise that comes from being a multi disciplinary indivdual.

3.0 out of 5 stars Light introduction, good for teens

m. · December 20, 2017

This is a nice book but I prefer Barbara Sher's books "Refuse to choose" or "If I could do anything.." or "Wishcraft". This book focuses more on giving you a confidence boost on accepting your multi talents and it focuses on describing the types of ways you could schedule your productivity. But it doesn't go any further than that. I think Barbara Sher's book provided a more complete picture of a mulit potentalite and offered more specific ways on being productive. This book would make a great gift for a high school student or teen who has a lot of interests. But for an adult, I think it needs more content. If you already own books about having lots of interests, I don't think this would provide too much. It's a nice read, its light, its cute, but if you need help, real help, other books can give you a little more specifics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical Guide To Life For The Person With Many Interests And Talents

A.C. · May 12, 2017

I found this book to be an entertaining and engaging practical guide to living with multiple interests and talents successfully. I've read many books on the subject that were inspiring but didn't really give me useful tools to handle an over-abundance of interests, skills and ideas when most of society is geared towards the narrow specialist. There were immediately actionable items presented that I've already started working on and I feel like they're helping me reach my goals. The author's enthusiasm for her subject is one of the most positive framings of this idea that I've ever seen- after reading her book I don't feel like I have to be apologetic about who I am now, I truly feel that being an enthusiastic generalist is a positive factor in my life. And what I most enjoyed about the book was her repeated suggestions that there are more than one approach or solution to the dilemmas we face as multipotentialites. I'd read at least three books on the subject previously but this was my favorite because the other books presented blueprints for success that I felt were too narrow and fit me somewhat but not perfectly. Ms. Wapnick did an amazing job of providing practical guidance and empathy while making it clear that in real life, every person is an individual and will find a unique path.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where ALL Of Your Dreams Become Reality - Buy This Book!

J.C.M. · May 11, 2017

This book will change your life forever in the best ways possible. Imagine if you could combine all of the random things you love and somehow "smoosh" them all together to create a more meaningful and fun life. Sound impossible? Not anymore! I used to see my multiple, disparate interests as a disadvantage. The author completely destroys this myth, citing specific reasons and examples that illustrate why being a 'multipotentialite' (someone with multiple interests and passions) is a huge advantage in today's society. This book goes far beyond mindset though. Emilie shares four distinct models that you can use to intentionally design your life, factoring in your personality AND passions. It's genius. You can feel Emilie's positive energy and caring spirit as she masterfully walks you through the entire process. Get ready for your soul to sing with joy, you've just found your peeps...and the book that will change everything forever. Buy this book right now so you can combine ALL of your dreams and create a new reality filled with more meaning, purpose and smiles.

Excelente libro (adquirí el de pasta blanda)

Me ha ayudado mucho, excelente libro, te recomiendo veas la plática de esta autora en Youtube es una plática de TED talk dado que este libro solo es para "multipotenciales" y así no gastar de más

Insightful and reassuring for people who like to try a bit of everything

Z. · June 7, 2024

If you've already watched Emilie's TED Talk, then arguably you already have a good grasp of what a multi-potentialite is and feel reassured that you are not alone. This book overall doesn't add a lot extra to the TED Talk, but it is very accessibly written, and it is the first-choice read for anyone seeking a book on multi-potentialism/multi-podism.

A Lifeline for the Multi-Passionate

W.G. · January 2, 2024

“How to Be Everything” is a breath of fresh air in the career guidance genre. It’s tailored for the ‘multipotentialites’ – those of us who have diverse interests and struggle with the idea of choosing just one career path. The author, with great empathy and understanding, dismantles the traditional notion that having one true calling is the only way to lead a fulfilling professional life. It reassures you that it’s okay not to have a single lifelong career and that your varied interests are actually an asset, not a liability. The book is well-organized, filled with real-life examples, and provides actionable tips to construct a fulfilling career that accommodates multiple passions. The writing style is engaging and relatable, making it a pleasant read. This book is a must-read for anyone who feels limited by the conventional career advice of specializing in one area.
