Facing Codependence: An Insightful Approach to Healing from Childhood Abuses, Overcoming Love Addiction, and Breaking Free from Toxic Emotions

Description:

About this item:

The groundbreaking bestseller on codependence—with more 750,000 copies sold—break the cycle, heal from past trauma, form fulfilling relationships, save your self-worth, and develop lasting, healthy habits and behavioral patterns

In Facing Codependence, Pia Mellody, internationally renowned expert on codependence and addiction recovery, decodes and identifies codependent thinking, emotions, and behavior and provides a proven roadmap to recovery.

For anyone who has been in a toxic relationship, engages in self-sabotaging behaviors themselves, or simply wants to be a better partner, and person, Facing Codependence dives into the core of human behavior and allows readers to:

·      End toxic patterns, including love addiction, narcissism, alcoholism, and substance abuse

·      Heal from dysfunctional family dynamics and end the cycle of abuse once and for all

·      Ditch anxious and avoidant attachment to form stable and secure relationships

·      Rediscover your sense of purpose, self-worth, and reclaim your identity and independence

Mellody simultaneously sets forth five primary adult symptoms of this crippling condition, then traces their origin to emotional, spiritual, intellectual, physical, and sexual abuses that occur in childhood. Central to Mellody's approach is the concept that the codependent adult's injured inner child needs healing. Recovery from codependence, therefore, involves clearing up the toxic emotions left over from these painful childhood experiences. Unlearning behavioral patterns and easing the grip of trauma takes time and effort, but right here, right now, is where you start.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This book stands out among the current glut of material on codependence because it claims the realm of parenting for its vantage point. The authors believe that codependents must heal themselves in order not to repeat the "less than nurturing" behaviors of their own addicted or emotionally dysfunctional parents. Hence, they couple strategies for recovery with guidelines on what is and is not "normal" in the parent-child relationship. The authors' conclusions will invite controversy; for instance, they suggest that "emotional sexual abuse" of children may lead to homosexuality in adulthood. Nor are they reluctant to generalize: "Although physical and mental illness aren't addictions, their effect on the family is the same." Offsetting the opinionated commentary is great compassion for the helpless, hurt children who live inside adult codependents. Mellody and Andrea Wells Miller are coauthors of Breaking Free: A Recovery Workbook for Facing Co de pend ence ; J. Keith Miller is a freelance writer. Author tour.

Good for anybody looking to understand what are basic functional healthy behaviors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful for CPTSD/Codependence Recovery

This book, although very triggering at times, helped me break through a very big layer of denial about my family history. Although it can be sad to face a grim reality, it was nice to feel “seen” and know that there are others who have had the same struggles. After seeing some negative reviews, it became apparent to me that these reviewers have either been blessed enough to not have had to endure an abusive childhood or they still are in deep denial. This book maybe isn’t for beginners on their journey to recovery, but it was a profoundly helpful and riveting read for me. Hope all you survivors take care of yourself out there, sending you my love and support.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book I've Found on the Subject of Codependence

T.R. · July 14, 2024

I've read a lot of books on this subject. Most of the books I read approached the subject assuming I'm living with an addict, or I am an addict. Neither of which is true in my case. I was raised by an alcoholic parent and have pretty severe codependent qualities. This book approaches codependence from an abuse perspective, defining abuse any parenting that was not nurturing. I was shocked how many times her narrative hit with me. If you are really striving to put codependence in the past, I would wholeheartedly recommend Facing Codependence by Pia Mellody, along with talk therapy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Read For All Who Are or Near A Codependent

If you’re reading this review then the greatest gift you can give yourself, right now, is this book. For my work and personal life I perform ongoing research of childhood trauma from neglect, mental abuse, physical abuse, substance abuse, and self harm. Pia’s updated book on Facing Codependence is life changing. Why? Because, Pia explains in easy to understand terms how codependency is developed, traits, and tools to overcome the devastation of this disease. Additionally, Pia shares her decades of research on family dysfunction. My favorite part of Pia’s writing style is how she explains a functional and dysfunctional family. Must have for anyone who has a personal experience of abuse, neglect, or addiction as a child or adult. Equally, a must for anyone who is close to an individual (or group) that’s suffers from any other above mentioned.I would recommend Pia’s other books and YouTube videos as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ FOR EVERYONE

This is a phenomenal book. This book should be required reading for every person before entering a relationship. This book breaks down codependency in very easy to understand terms as well as easily to relate to terms too. It goes indepth into the different ypes of codependency. If you are looking for better, healthier, relationships in your life, this book is a must read. We are reading it as a family with my adult kids. It has brought us all so much closer and healed so many misunderstandings. If you have substance abuse or narcissism in your family, this book is just so helpful in understanding these conditions and provides hope for those affected. This book is excellent. I can't say it enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real turning point…

This book was referred by my therapist ten years ago, and the explanations and end-of-chapter questions really helped open my eyes to the codependent patterns woven into my identity and behavioral patterns. Definitely one of the best I’ve read on the subject.

Underwhelming

Good as an introduction but if you seek depth, I recommend John Bradshaw.

Intriguing read

D. · August 16, 2020

This book explains what codependence is and how it affects the relationship with self and people around you. Pia does a great job in presenting codependence symptoms and also the natural characteristics of a child are. She also describes the relation of overnurturing or undernurturing of those characteristics to codependence symptoms. One thing I didn't like was the tools to correct those symptoms are mentioned in a different book. Nonetheless bringing those unconscious and supposedly authentic reactions to limelight makes me more mindful about what I feel and what I do.

Excellent

Essential reading for anyone who has difficulties with relationships - either personal or professional. The workbook that goes with it (and needs to be bought separately) is also excellent.
