5.0 out of 5 stars This is really about that.....

Rob Bell is refreshing. He is taking new looks at subjects with fresh language and perspective. I got this book after reading Velvet Elvis. He is a thinker, He is funny. He is relevant about the issues of life and what people talk about today. I also bought it because I read the review about the guy who bought it and used it in an upcoming wedding that he conducted. Do you have a wedding coming up, then this book is for you.In Sex God, Rob explores ideas like sexuality and identity and where does that come from, what does being made in the image of God look like today and what does love look like today between a man and woman, or a family? His Chapter titles are great -- 'God Wears Lipstick', 'Sexy on the inside', 'Angels and Animals' and 'She ran into the Girls Bathroom', keep you turning the pages of this great book. His chapter on marriage is worth the whole book and his cross-cultural understanding of the Biblical story gives a new generation of readers fresh insight. This book is for men and women and how they treat each other. It is for couples considering marriage or for those who have been married a long time. It is for parents to talk with to their children. Rob writes about the common misconceptions about sex and what people search for, what has let them down and what their soul longs for.Page 156/7 - "It's easy to take your clothes off and have sex. People do it all the time. But opening up your soul to someone, letting them into your spirit and thoughts and fears and future and hopes and dreams..... that is being naked." This book will help you find out what love is all about and how you are apart of something much bigger.....

5.0 out of 5 stars A New Way of Thinking

S.G. · August 8, 2011

This book gives readers a new way of thinking. Often we focus on the sin and not on the reason why we are sinning. This book examines the big "sin" of lust and reveals that it really is the wrong way to look at it. Lust=desire=the thing we long for, the thing we cannot live without. It isn't just sexual. It is the thing that we run to for pleasure. That can be a drug, sex, food, work, etc. Bell shows the reader that you should not resist lust, in fact you cannot. One needs to set their lust/their desire towards the Father. This may seem like common sense but often people are taught to white knuckle their way through their lusts. The reality though is that you really would never be free from that desire. If one is able to see how amazing the Fathers love is, they would see that nothing else really compares. Here is some application. I am riding in my car on a summer day and there are beautiful women all around me. I asked God, "how can I really not lust/think/stare at all these women?" Then, having been shown by Bell to direct my lust/thinking/staring towards Heaven. Now that place is more desirable than anything on this earth. I laughed and drove around now thinking of the day I will be with my Father in Heaven.I have also used this book when talking to people who are struggling with major addictions and when I share with them that all one needs to do is find a greater love, then at least they have hope. Those with addictive personalities are people who are so passionate about what they love. They often become the most active believers when they come to Christ.Anyways, I highly recommend this book to those who struggle with strong urges of desire towards things in this world. If directed in the wrong way an addictive can kill or hurt you. Directed towards the Father, it can be a love so passionate, it can light up the world.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Worthwhile Read on the True Power of Sexuality

S.S. · June 14, 2015

Rob Bell takes on the daunting subject of sexuality and spirituality, specifically Christianity, and emerges with a discussion that is surprising, thought-provoking and by the end, uplifting. But this book isn't about, as one might think when one combines sex and religion in the mind, sin or what's sinful. It's not about what's good or bad and it's definitely not about anyone going to heaven or hell. This writing is about connection--the connection we all have with God and each other, and how that connection can suffer damage when we have little understanding about the divine nature of our bodies and the true power of sexuality.I've long been a fan of Bell's friendly, accessible approach to faith--I've seen many of his NOOMA short films and I highly recommend those as well (the one called FLAME would be a good companion to this book). His work is well-grounded in Scripture but nothing is over anyone's head. You don't have to be a seminary student to understand what he's talking about. And with a topic as convoluted as sex, the easier the better. We as a society do a great job of complicating it all on our own. We push ourselves to the extremes becoming, as Bell says, either angels or animals when really we want to seek a healthy medium."In reaction to denial, people often head to the other end of the spectrum, which is indulgence. The pendulum swings. But we were created to live in the tension. And when you lose the tension, you lose something central to what it means to be human.Living like angels can be just as destructive as living like animals."Amen to that. But how do we find that happy tension? It takes some thinking on how we see ourselves, and how men and women view each other. Bell offers some challenging notions on all of it. Which is why this book should be read. Anything that challenges us so well on questions of such importance is absolutely worthwhile.

m. · March 25, 2012

my friend bought me this book about 5-6 years ago and since then it has sat on my self gathering dust. after my wife left me to find a man with more money something made me pick it up and read it. every day i read it my life just seemed to get better and better. this book really opened my eyes to what i knew was there, but never delved into. it helped me get through my wife taking my son 200 miles away from me and maybe even helped me find my new girlfriend? who knows?... all i know is, that this book has made me feel so good inside! i feel like a happier person after reading it! even if your not a Christian you should still be able to read it, even if you just think of god and the bible as just a story. the meaning and emotions behind it will change you for the better. :-)

Good Read
