5.0 out of 5 stars *****10/5 stars, if I could have given, changed my life and gave me hope!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

p. · December 10, 2006

I read this book about 8 years ago, and still use it's teachings on a daily basis to reinforce my life and practices today. The author writes earnestly and succinctly, yet with humor, clean humor, that lasts beyond time. This book has given me infinite hope for healing. The reading is very light and entertaining, and a great read for anyone; yet, it is one of the deepest books I have read with the depth depending on where the individual chooses to be in their emotional, mental, spiritual, intellectual, and physical journeys, and have referenced it frequently. For those who are journeying with an open mind, reservation of judgement, willingness to consider to think 'outside the box'of their own belief system and willing to consider to be honest with self, and find question in why we are faced with such universal conflict, stemming all the way from that within, where it originates, to that reflected outward, this book holds many incredable, simple, answers, and is a great, light, enjoyable read!!!!! One of the 2 best I have ever read, maybe the best.I am a physician, very aware of all the suffering in our culture and world, and frankly very saddened to see that the key to true healing still has not been adequately addressed in our medical schools or ongoing continuing educations, yet we continue to skirt 'the truth' with permitting ourselves to 'stay busy' with the distractions of learning 'new drugs, diagnostics, research standards, treatments and mandates to keep us from truly wondering and reflecting address the key to true healing, are we really 'first doing no harm', or are we acting as automotons just 'trying to keep up with mandates and the 'new standards of cares'?What is true healing, and are we fulfilling our role and dreams to facilitate true healing in our patients, and ourselves, so we/they become more able to do the same with/for others, or are we stuck on the viscious wheel of 'just keeping up' with testing and mandates and 'standards', and frankly completely missing the boat as the morbitity and mortality of humankind skyrockets malignantly out of control, albiet with apparently 'different' diseases than those of the past, far beyond plagues of our past that were at least treatable with now resistent drugs, obsolete diagnostics, while many of us ourselves have forgotten the true key to true healing, and the 'art' of healing, or just frankly do not have the 'time and energy' to do that for which most of us went into medicine, with all the other mandates we have permitted to be placed upon us. Have we given all/most of our 'power' away by believing what we are being forced to believe and learn, just to keep up and stay secure, at the expence of true healing of life?I did not go into medicine 'just to keep up', but to really make a positive difference in the lives of others, and this book has been THE key to give me the hope to help guide others to/thru their healing process. This book gave me the permission to know there was a mechanism to true, often spontaneous healing, and it often and most frequently is not in the form of a 'pill' or diagnostic test or physical treatment. But it takes first responsibility of the true healer, the individual healing, what we call 'the patient', not the practioner (who simply may facilitate)to honestly look at their own stuff, often sadly out of desparation, then the work to work thru their own stuff, so 'all circles have been closed'and true 'spontaneous healing' is attainable. This requires fortitude, courage, honesty,open-mindedness, perserverance, modesty, respect of self and others, and a critical willingness to disbanding ones own judgements, critiques, and beliefs they were cultured with and grew up with, and which helped them 'get thru' to be where they are. it really requires either an emotionally mature or very desparate state for one to truly 'get this book', yet it is the greatest, lightest, enjoyable read i have also read. I have been the 'patient' in need of this healing, I have traveled this journey. The simple truths in this book appear radical, but occur daily in all our lives, if and only if we choose to see them. We can't see anything we do not choose to see, hear anything said that is unheard, we look away physically, emotionally, intellectually, etc. and honesty and willingness OF OURSELVES is key in this choice making.I have traveled all the above journeys. I have been in judgement of the person I have become, and thought the person I am now is 'nuts'. Yet there is a HUGE DIFFERENCE: I can have compassion for the person I was (and all those similarly), who could not see past all my judgements to truly learn and thus heal, instead of be in judgement of the person I was, as that would make me no better than the one I was 10 years ago, as a stuffed shirt, knowing the latest, greatest, diagnostic drug or test, yet being totally miserable down to the core of my soul, just knowing, JUST KNOWING, SOMEHOW, SOMETHING WAS MISSING TO MY 'ART OF HEALING'. Now i have many of the answers.Western medicine has a very vital role, and cannot and should not be ignored, overlooked, disregarded, minimized or disbanded, in any way, that is not the intent in any way of my writing. It is very important, as well. I am simply saying there are alternatives if we choose see and explore, and this book lightly addresses many aspects to key vital areas.Thank you, Marlo, you have changed my life and give me the courage to continue to work with individuals every day in a new way empowering them with true tools they can continue to use no matter how the times change or how fast they are changing. I now understand why I became a physician, and your writing this book was key and instrumental in my holistic and alternative pathway i now practice (although I must admit I was the best 'stuffed shirt' at one time, who would call me today a 'goofball'. but today I am happy KNOWING that what I do has beyond life long positive effects. Your book alone was the pivotal book, and I reference it often and give it away often.Thank you again for the courage to write this book.A good teacher gives one lots of organized information, but a 'TRUE TEACHER awakens within you that which you already know'!!!!. This book, whether fiction, or whatever, has been a true teacher for me and many others I have given the book to.Kudos to you Marlo, for the courage to write it.

I have read this exceptional book many times, and bought this copy for a friend who is fascinated with Australia. I haven't read my copy in years, however it seems to be time for a re-read.This true story may be difficult for some to believe, but the "real people" the ancient tribe that has dwelled in the harsh outback "called" a remarkable woman to do a walkabout with them and let her know their ways. They are finding it more and more difficult to live the Earth the way they have for thousands of years, and the story of this one woman's journey with them, living as they live - changed the way I saw the Aborigines (even though I am quite connected with Australia and her people.)Although this was published in 1990, the issues, the peoples, the struggles of the world have not changed, and this cautionary tell rings true throughout time.

4.0 out of 5 stars good read!

V. · November 23, 2012

I decided to write a review after reading reviews ranging from very positive to very negative. The book is some 200 pages and I read it over a month so for me it was not a big investment of my time. I did enjoy the story and journey taken by Ms Morgan in the unknown world of Australian Aborigines. I can't quiet say that this is the best fiction I have ever read. However, I don't think this book boring at all, there are many other books out there are boring and this is not one of them. The message author is trying to deliver is a spiritual one based on a frame work of her experience in outback. Positive reviews are coming from people who appreciated this message about spirituality and opposite reviews are arising from inaccuracy of this outback experience. While reading this book I naturally started to take mental notes about all the details provided about outback and about the people author had met. I did question her detailed memory over the 3 to 4 month period that is the base of this whole book. Author strategically excluded all the details that can positively verify some of her claims about the time she spent with real people. Few of the other reviewers with specific knowledge of this real people and from Australia also point out irregularities about this account. So, anyone after reading this book can easily poke enough holes about her account. I would have to admit that I think it does not take enormous effort to refute this account if you methodically collect and analyze all the facts of her account laid out by Ms. Marlow. In any case this book is a work of fiction so perhaps it would be a futile effort to begin with.On the other hand if you just focus on the message that author is trying to deliver then it makes a worthwhile reading experience. The message is about way we live vs. aborigines have been living. It is hard to refute the facts about damages we have done to this planet for our own benefit and have denied equal rights to other species. By learning the way aborigines live author highlights how we are so engaged in material world dominated by fear and greed among other vices. We often fail to conduct ourselves on a more spiritual level and fail to adhere to greater good practice of life. The strength of this book lies in delivering this message in an interesting way that author has done. Therefore, I enjoyed reading it and recommend it to anyone. The message in this book is not new to anyone and most people are aware of this. However, the difficulty lies in truly embracing the change and leaving our comfort zone. Conversations between author and aborigines during her time in the outback have some profound wisdom concepts. One of the statements made by elder that I liked is below."Do humans know that extinction of any species also means that humans are also closer to their extinction?" - By aborigine elderIn summary, I think this book is a good read. Don't get caught up in verifying any of the details about author's trip and try to figure out it was real or not. For me the message was thought provoking and it should be enough to occupy our thoughts about how we can improve our way of living.
