Great characterization!
I really enjoyed this book. It has an almost fairy tale feel to it. The characters are all very well developed and fleshed out. I particularly enjoyed the character of Cicero. The story ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, so I'm looking forward to reading the sequel.

J.A. Fagan has created such a cool world in this story! I fell in love with all the characters, especially Elswyth’s crow Cicero. I can’t help but be jealous that I don’t have a Cicero of my own!The story moves really well with new twists unfolding throughout the book!It’s a must read for fantasy fans, especially for those of us who love strong female characters!

This is a wonderful story. Jan has a great imagination. Each one of her characters are so believable. I love the way she brings each one to life.
Beautiful realms and friendships
I am new to the fantasy genre and I couldn't have picked a better read as an introduction. The book moves smoothly between a deeply hidden forest realm and a gorgeous kingdom on the verge of betrayal and war. The conviction of a stunning young heroine and her brave companions sustains the hope and suspense throughout the book. The characters as well as the landscapes are richly presented, you can't put it down! I find myself calling my dog my "compliment". This is the perfect summer read! Find a quiet corner, hide & read!

This book was a thoroughly enjoyable read! Loved the cast of characters, the descriptions of them - and the fact that the storyline drew me in from the very first page. This is one of those books that is entertaining enough to be read many times over (= the very best kind of books!).
