Unearthed: The Lies We Carry & The Truths They Bury

Description:

In this searing memoir, Chanchal Garg reveals the spiritual and sexual abuse that shattered her sense of self and forced her to question a life defined by duty and sacrifice. Raised as a devoted Indian daughter, she was taught never to question authority-until a transformative moment during a yoga class, while pregnant with her daughter, awakened a truth she could no longer ignore.

That realization set her on a solitary journey, as she lost her faith, community, and the life she had always known. Without the support she had once relied on, she had to learn to trust herself, reclaim her bicultural identity, and redefine what it meant to be both Indian and American-on her own terms.

Unearthed is a powerful call to every woman who has ever felt silenced-an invitation to trust your inner voice, reclaim your story, and return to yourself.

This luminous story will resonate with anyone navigating the delicate balance between honoring tradition and claiming their truth.- Kara Cutruzzula, author of Do It for Yourself, Do It Today, and Do It (or Don't)A powerful, courageous, and vital read that dives deep into the reality of spiritual abuse, cult leaders, and what it takes to find your voice. In a world where many women of color have had their voices silenced, Chanchal arises as a powerful disrupter. A debut author to watch! -Jas Rawlinson, award-winning speaker, advocate, and best-selling authorI had a moment during a difficult time when a crucial insight emerged: my power is not derivative. As I read Chanchal's moving journey, I was struck by how many women never get the chance tocome to this realization-despite it being true for all of us. Her story is both tender and fierce, and it moved me deeply. The way she names and reclaims her intrinsic power is not only personal-it's an invitation. More than just a story, Chanchal has written a critical offering for our moment-one that calls women back to themselves with honesty, courage, and hope.-Sheila Warren, CEO Project Liberty InstituteUnearthed is a searing memoir exploring how a smart, levelheaded woman falls under the spell of a so-called guru, tolerating sexual abuse. It accurately portrays how even loving families can damage their children, and the difficult road to healing. At times I wanted to shout at the protagonist yet always admired her honesty and courage in revealing herself. Chanchal Garg lays the story out in deft, beautiful writing. It will linger with me.-Melissa Connelly, author of What was Lost, finalist for the Feathered Quill Award

A quiet, powerful challenge to the stories we carry

S. · 3 June 2025

This book is for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of how culture, tradition, and inherited norms are embedded in us—down to the cellular level—and how difficult it can be to shift them. It helped me connect with those parts of myself and realize I'm not alone in this experience. I love how Chanchal weaves profound insights into her storytelling. This book would have opened my mind to more than what was right in front of me—and helped me tune into my own voice.

For any woman who’s ready to reclaim her story and move forward on her own terms.

Chanchal Garg doesn’t hold back in "Unearthed". She calls out family secrets, spiritual power plays, and all the messy in-between with straight-up honesty. The writing is fast, clear, and packed with real-life takeaways on setting boundaries and trusting yourself. I closed the book feeling braver, lighter, and ready to redraw a few lines in my own life. I highly recommend it for any woman who’s ready to reclaim her story and move forward on her own terms.

For every women who’s ever felt split in two…

S. · 15 June 2025

This immigrant biography is for any woman who has ever been told to shrink or stay silent in the name of culture, faith, or family.  As a child of immigrant parents, I deeply resonated with the author’s story and helped to normalize many of my own experiences both as a child, as well as an adult.  Hearing the author’s journey to breaking her silence and reclaiming her voice was beyond inspiring.  If I could hand this book to my younger self, I would.  This is the kind of story that shifts something in you – if you let it.  It has inspired me to continue to honor myself and my inner voice at all costs.  I am truly grateful for the authentic and vulnerable way in which the author tells her story, as you feel the pain, struggle, strength and healing through her words, inspiring you throughout.  This book serves as a mirror, a map, and a possibility.  If you’ve ever questioned your place or felt like you needed to stay silent for your survival, this book is for you.  Read it and your truest self will be so grateful that you did.

How mythologies shape our reality, and what happens when you talk back to the Gods

R.P. · 29 June 2025

This book is wonderful for anyone who is interested in how the stories we grow up with -- our cultural and religious mythologies -- can become woven in the fabric of our believe systems and world views. And then what happens when life tugs at the threads of those stories and starts to unravel them. There comes a point when the author, for her own survival, has to let go of everything she thought she knew, and reality comes crashing down. And she faces that with such courage and grit as she builds the kind of life where she can finally, honestly tell the truth, while weaving newer, truer connections to her family and heritage. Such an inspiration for anyone who has felt like they have to hide or conform to stay connected to family and heritage.
