4.0 out of 5 stars Convenient charging, plenty of games
(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } This small gaming station really lives up to the photos it's bright, colourful, and packed with a huge library of games spanning multiple generations. Straight out of the box, you get access to an incredible 40,000 titles, which is insane value when you consider it's priced around what one modern game would cost!It has a rechargeable battery that charges via USB C which is convenient. The 4" screen is crisp and perfectly fine for retro gaming, and the overall build quality feels solid for the price. While the system is a bit fiddly for me due to my larger hands, it’s still very usable and comfortable for most. It's small but that’s part of the charm. A compact retro console like this is ideal for quick sessions or travel. If you’re a fan of classic gaming or just looking for an affordable way to explore a massive library, this is a fun and worthwhile pick.
5.0 out of 5 stars Take a trip back in time to see how enjoyable retro games can be
This small device holds more games than you think possible. With each game taking you back into the past to enjoy. It has a 1.5GHz CPU and a Mali-G31MP dual-core GPU. 8GB of DDR3l RAM. Giving you a nice little gaming experience all round, unless you really, really don’t like games which are the best when it comes to graphics. It houses a rechargeable 4000mAh battery, (which can be replaced easily) offering up to 10 hours of gaming, depending on games, quality and other factors. There are so many buttons giving you more options of playing style, with joysticks, cursor buttons, paddle buttons and more. Most of the control buttons are on the front with the paddles on the rear.It has a 4” IPS screen which sounds a little too small for gaming on but it’s actually not as bad as you may initially think. The games are clear and easy to see what’s happening without any issues at all.The controls/paddles/buttons react instantly giving you a good gaming experience without frustration. There are so many games to choose from, too many to list here, from many brands of gaming systems out there. Each game taking you back in time before gaming graphic were becoming as good as real life. The inbuilt speaker is of good quality plus there’s a 3.5mm audio jack to listen to this without other hearing what you're doing.I’ve not played all the games as yet, I mean, there’s thousands of them, but most games I’ve played on it so far have run pretty smoothly. Although one of two do seem to struggle and need more CPU, which causes heat inside. But it’s nothing to worry about as the games still play.In all, a fantastic, nostalgic, was to keep yourself, or others, entertained for hours. There are more games than I think anyone could play and those games are easy to play on the small screen.Plus, you get a hard case and charging lead in with this device, plus, a 256GB micro-sd card.As for the price, well, this was £55.99 (at time of writing) which, for what you get and the amount of games to keep you entertained, is well worth the money.
2.0 out of 5 stars Battery issues
The media could not be loaded. Had this for 3 days. Charged it twice in that time. Battery doesn’t appear to charge properly. Will show 100% with lead in, unplug the lead and within a few seconds its shows 69%. It then runs down quite fast, gets to zero, plug lead back in and it jumps straight to 50%. Dont know whether its just an issue with this one or a common problem but its going back. Shame as the games i played all played well
3.0 out of 5 stars returned but why?
within 30 mins i sent it back. system was not on wifi at the time and the games started buffering/freezing. in hand it felt like Oxfam division. would have less stars but the rest was great. memory card was top draw. delivery, plus the packing was great and the accessories which came along for the ride.
4.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgic gem with quirks
The VELPAX V40, in its little purple shell, has become my secret companion during those slow, late-night lulls on the ward at the Royal. Its four-inch, 720 × 720 IPS screen looks far sharper than I ever expected, with colours that really jump out, and the tempered glass has already shrugged off a careless drop from the nurses’ station without a scratch.Under the hood sits a 1.5 GHz RK3326 alongside 4 GB of RAM, which lets me flit between more than twenty different emulators. A 256 GB card comes pre-loaded with something in the region of forty-thousand games, enough to keep even the most restless retro fan occupied. The good bits first. A 4,000 mAh battery will sail through a double shift, the analogue sticks glide without any dead zones, and the rubberised casing sits comfortably in my rather small hands. When I get home, Wi-Fi and a Type-C-to-HDMI lead mean the children can push Mario onto the living-room television in seconds, no fuss at all. There are some middling moments. The D-pad can feel a touch mushy, so the odd Tetris piece takes an unexpected detour through Partick. The main menu is cluttered with duplicated ROMs, so a bit of housekeeping is essential if you prefer a tidy library. On the downside, PlayStation and DS titles warm the unit more than I would like, and the fiddly FN plus Start button combination for exiting games is unnecessary faff.Even with those quirks, a pin-sharp screen, solid construction, and an absurd pile of classics make the V40 cracking value for anyone after pocket-sized nostalgia in Glasgow or anywhere else.
5.0 out of 5 stars No issues during use
Took this on a long train ride and didn’t realise how quickly time passed. Played a good mix of old favourites and some I hadn’t seen in years. Controls responded well once I got used to the layout, and I barely had to adjust anything. Screen was sharp enough to make longer sessions comfortable. Battery held up better than expected, even with audio on. Didn’t notice any lag or freezing which usually annoys me with these types of things. Compact enough to pocket quickly when needed. Felt like a proper throwback without the usual drawbacks. Charged overnight and lasted nearly all day while travelling. Didn’t feel like it was trying too hard to impress – just worked the way it should.
