It's made of metal and does a great job protecting the Insta 360 camera from drops and falls. The metal is of good quality. The product also comes with a lens cover, which I appreciate the inclusion of heavily, as the Insta360 X5 doesn't really have a protected lens itself.The product also has a variety of mounts (a couple of 1/4-inch screw threads and the classic action camera one), meaning you can easily rig it up to include small lights or mics, for example.I would definitely recommend this product, it's of very high quality.

This is a light aluminium utility frame for the Insta360 X5 that ought to provide a good degree of protection against knocks and drops. I would rather damage a £50 cage than a £500 camera, and always use a metal cage on any camera that risks physical damage.The cage itself has three 1/4” threads for attachment to a tripod, selfie stick or other accessories, in addition to a cold shoe attachment at the top that might be useful for a light or even an external microphone. I sometimes create 360 virtual tours or events and that kind of utility is always useful.On the inside, there are silicon pads at the top and bottom to avoid scratches, and a small sponge on either side that presumably acts like a wind slayer to improve sound quality with the internal microphone. Finally, it comes with a lens cap guard to provide some protection against scratches while not in use.I read one very negative review, suggesting the magnetic clasp failed leading to a damaged camera, so I tested this with a little trepidation, but I noticed it comes with a small accessory to screw down the clasp in situations where it might be exposed to direct shocks, heavy vibrations, so I would simply screw that down for the sake of expediency.That screw could be easily lost when not in use, so it would have been better if there was some other place on the cage to keep that screw securely attached when not in immediate use. Apart from that minor gripe, it fits the camera well and is very effective in its function. Another nuisance is that Insta360 case that comes with camera will not fit when the cage is in use.Currently on sale for a shade under £50, it seems a little expensive, but actually comparable with similar quality cages for the smaller DJI action cameras. It is certainly much cheaper than a new camera.

I got this up my new X5 because I’ve damaged way too many cameras in the past, usually from silly knocks or rough handling while hiking or switching mounts in a rush. I wanted something that gave a bit of extra protection without being a pain to use—and this cage does exactly that.It’s made from lightweight metal but feels really solid in the hand. The X5 fits in snugly and locks into place with the quick-release latch, which has a good, tight snap. There are also screws included if you want to fully lock it down, but I’ve been using it without those so far and haven’t had any issues. The silicone lens cap is surprisingly useful too—it stays on properly and gives the lenses decent protection when it’s in your bag.Took it out on a coastal trail walk last weekend, had it mounted to a chest harness most of the day. At one point, I fumbled with a strap and dropped the whole setup onto a rocky bit of the path—classic me. Thankfully, the cage took the hit and the camera came out completely fine. That alone made me feel like the extra protection was worth every penny.The cage design is practical too. You get 1/4" threads on both the bottom and side so you can easily switch between horizontal and vertical setups. The cold shoe mounts on top and the side are great for a mic or small light. I tried both and neither interfered with the lenses. You can still open the battery door, charge the camera, and use all the side buttons while it’s caged up, which makes it way more convenient than I expected.If I had to nitpick, the added bulk is noticeable—especially if you’re used to keeping the X5 as light and streamlined as possible. Also, the latch felt a bit stiff the first couple of times I used it, though it’s eased up with use.Overall, this is a really solid case for anyone who uses the X5 outdoors or in more active filming situations. It doesn’t get in the way, it’s well built, and for someone like me who’s had a bad track record with gear, it definitely adds that extra layer of confidence.I hope this review helps someone out.

I've been shooting with the new Insta360 X5 and wanted a way to add a microphone and get some extra protection, so I picked up this metal utility cage.This thing is a great accessory for the X5. It’s made of metal and feels really solid, giving the camera a good deal of protection from knocks and scrapes without adding too much weight. The camera slides in and fits snugly, and you can still get to all the buttons and the touchscreen easily.  The best part is the added mounting options. It has a cold shoe mount on the side, which is perfect for attaching a small shotgun mic – a huge upgrade for vlogging. It also has three standard 1/4" threads, so you can easily mount it on different tripods or add other accessories. The bottom has the classic quick-release folding fingers, so it works with all my existing action camera mounts.  I was worried it might show up in the 360-degree video, but the frame is designed well and stays completely invisible in the final stitch, which is essential. The included silicone lens cap is a nice touch too, giving the big lenses some much-needed protection when you toss the camera in a bag.If you’re looking to build out your Insta360 X5 into a more serious vlogging or action rig, this utility cage is a must-have. It adds the protection and mounting points the camera is missing on its own.

DO NOT BUY.1 star because we can't put lower.The magnetic part totally dismantle itself and my camera crashed and broke. Poor quality for a £400 camera.

I like that the frame is metal and the latch is positive. You do need to make sure to press until it clicks, but it's held securely from there. There is a small screw included which you can use to tie the latch down even better. I am concerned that it will be easy to lose the screw when it's not installed, so I need to use a small envelope or something in my case to hold it.Included are four pads which I assume are replacements for the ones already on the frame. There were no instructions included so I have to guess.There are connectors in the bottom and the side for the selfie-stick or tripod standard screw. I like that these are machined into the metal so the screw should be secure. I'm not sure of the purpose of the screws being on the side for a 360 degree camera, but they're there if you have a special situation that requires them. I suppose they could hold lights or something but of course they will show up in your photo also.

Holds the X5 securely and provides even more mounting options.

This is a good frame. Comes with extra wind screens. There are 3 screw mount points on the frame giving you multiple options. Also 2 shoe mounts for accessories.When using this my camera is very secure, there is no rattle, and no concerns that it will fall out. The frame is not able to fully protect the lenses or touch screen, but that is what you get the lens guards for and screen protectors for.I really like the latch mechanism to open and close the frame. While it feels very secure with just the latch, there is also a thumb screw you can use to even further lock it into place. There was some thought put into this.The silicon lens protector is designed to work with the case to protect the lenses. It fit on their better when the lenses are bare, but works fine when there lens protectors installed. Ov my very limited experience with protective cases for this camera (2) this is my favorite.

Great protection for Insta360 X5 camera for rugged and tough environment

This utility frame case for Insta360 X5 fits the the camera perfectly. This metal protective case comes with a high quality silicone lens cap. It also has cold shoe mount, abd quick release adapter for other Insta360 camera accessories, like a self stick or tripod. It is very easy to put on and easy to use. The protect is solid and designed for a very rugged and abusive environment, such as bike route, rock climbing, etc. This kit has all the functionality needed for a touch environment. The value definitely worth the investment.
