A little more faff, for the VHS conversion, because my old Sharp video recorder only had a scart connection. I firstly tried a stubby scart to AV connector as an intermediate connection but that didn't work. In the end, I had to connect from the VHS via scart lead to something with the necessary red, white and Yellow AV OUT connections as well, and for me that was an old Panasonic DVD recorder, so the gizmo connected to that. That connection sequence worked fine.POINT TO NOTE: this is a real time conversion process, using the camcorder or VHS as the player and the OBS software as the recorder. So say the tape is 60 minutes, the recording process is 60 minutes. For the OBS conversion, I chose "near flawless" resolution so you do end up with big files, but best clarity too, which at the end of the day is what you're trying to achieve, right? As an example, 40 tapes, mostly full of home movie footage took up about 200GB of storage. As a final point, try a short recording first, check to make sure everything looks good in the OBS playback files, before completing the full recording. And as a final final point, if you intend to create a full length MP4 copy as a master without any further editing software, then be aware of the run time and stop your recording at the end of the tape, otherwise you're creating excessively large files for no reason.I hope my review helps you bring back some of those home movie memories to the TV screen. For me, that's now as simple as having a portable hard drive plugged into the USB port on my TV.
5.0 out of 5 stars Works well with Windows 11 PC
Works perfectly with my Windows 11 PC, capturing video from VHS VCR using RCA connection and from Panasonic DV camera using S-video connection.PC wouldn't recognise it initially when it was plugged into USB port on the case, but moved it to a port on the motherboard (USB 3.2) & the PC picked it up straight away (See Settings / Devices / Cameras) & has worked flawlessly since.I use OBS Studio to capture and Da Vinci to edit videos. Both free and fairly easy to use. Captured videos up to 45 minutes so far with no issues.Good value, works.
4.0 out of 5 stars Analogue to digital converter - but you might need an S Video cable / converter.
I'm going to give this a 4 for now but will come back. It's a cable that allows you to connect older camcorders to your PC and with the right software convert them to a more modern digital copy.It doesn't improve resolution or anything so 1080P will still be 1080P.It has composite video & audio cables and S Video. The composite cable have male female adapters but in my case crucially the S Video cable is female and so is the output from my camcorder. So now I'm going to have to either find an S Video cable thats male - male ... or go buy one.Build quality looks fine - decent moulded plugs - I just need one more old style adapter to test it.I will come back when I have that & updated. In any case was great to revisit some 20 year old Hi 8 videos of the kids & will definitely progress this.
5.0 out of 5 stars Works out of the box
I've had several video capture devices, none perfect and most didn't work how they should. This one though, I plugged it in, opened the free OBS software, (I had already watched a few YouTube videos to learn how to set it up) and the software recognised my old Sony Camcorder. I've now transferred several old analogue tapes to digital. I think it's great value, and it actually works.
5.0 out of 5 stars Converting vhs to memory stick…
if I could give this 10 stars, I would, I am so pleased with the results! I’ve been able to transfer our 34-year-old wedding video from VHS to a memory stick something we’ve wanted to do for years. It worked beautifully and now we’re planning to convert all our kids’ old VHS tapes and Hi8 videos onto an external hard drive. Can’t wait to show the grandkids all those precious memories! Easy to use, decent quality, and such a lovely way to bring old footage back to life. So glad I bought it and at £18.99 we can do as many videos as we want, compared to the cost we were quoted for one to have it transferred is amazing! I am just so pleased!
1.0 out of 5 stars Not Stable for Long Video Transfers – Avoid for Tape Conversion
I used this USB Video Capture device to digitize old Video8 tapes, and while it initially seemed fine, it quickly became frustrating. After about 90 minutes, the colors in the video shift dramatically, and the only way to fix it is to stop and restart everything. This makes it unusable for long tapes, which defeats the purpose of digitizing full home videos. The build feels cheap, and while it’s advertised as “Mac compatible,” it’s not stable or officially supported. OBS doesn’t always recognize it properly, and you have to constantly tweak settings. If you’re serious about preserving your old videos, I strongly recommend spending a bit more on a reliable device, which works perfectly on Mac without these issues. This device might work for short clips, but for long-term use or important footage, look elsewhere.

USB Video/Audio capture module works perfectly
Sorry it took so long for this review. I had planned to convert the Super VHS tapes I made almost 40 years ago to digital files, but unfortunately my VHS recorder didn’t cooperate. It apparently acquired an appetite for VHS tapes since it was last used, and decided to eat them. So did a slightly older Super VHS recorder. I had wanted to use one of them to test the Super VHS input that this capture card includes. Since I don’t currently have a working VHS recorder, I tested this with a DVD player. The video/audio capture module worked perfectly using the standard video and audio inputs. Nothing more needs to be done than just plug in the cables. I had never used the OBS Studio software before, and there was some learning curve. It installed fine on a relatively old laptop running Windows 7. After I realized I had to group together the video and audio to create a combined file, the recording worked perfectly. I had to change the output format from the apparently default mkv to mp4 to create a file that would play on my computer. The free open-source program includes a bunch of settings, but except for changing the output format, the defaults worked fine. It is certainly more complex than needed to just transfer the DVD or VHS output to a computer. Even though the software could have been more user friendly, I’m giving this capture module 5 stars because hardware worked flawlessly.Functionality:The hardware capture module works exactly as expected.
