Then I have the colour checker charts to calibrate colour in post. But wouldn't it be better to just get it right first time? Enter the LightColor Meter.This little thing works with flash and continues lighting. For me it's more useful during continuous lighting to make sure white balance is right but also balancing coloured lighting.The device uses an app. I hate apps. Everything needs an app. Why can't they just put a little screen on the device? In fairness, that's the only issue I have with this.And so whilst it is another thing to carry around, it is a durable thing and it replaces my light meter. The ability to continuously stream the readings is super useful for continuous lighting during video too rather than having to manually meter. So whilst I'm still getting used to incorporating this into my workflow, it does seem like a genuinely useful addition that could make some other tmtools redundant, albeit at a relatively steep price.

I’ve been using this meter for a while now, and overall, it’s a really solid tool with some great features, but it’s not without its flaws. The accuracy is probably the best part—it takes all the guesswork out of figuring out colour temperature and light intensity. I work a lot with mixed lighting, and this little device has made it so much easier to balance everything perfectly without having to constantly eyeball it or fix things in post. Being able to get real-time readings straight to my phone is a huge time-saver, especially when I’m setting up lights for a shoot.The Bluetooth connectivity is another big plus. I love that I can adjust lights and check measurements without having to walk back and forth. When I’m working alone, this is a lifesaver. It’s also pretty tough and portable, which is great for location shoots. I’ve tossed it in my bag without a second thought, and it’s held up really well. It doesn’t feel flimsy, which is something I really appreciate in gear that I rely on regularly.That said, there are a few things that bring it down to four stars for me. The biggest issue is the app—it’s functional, but it could be way better. The interface feels a little outdated, and sometimes it’s not as intuitive as I’d like. It also completely depends on your phone, which isn’t always ideal. If my phone dies, loses connection, or I just don’t want to keep it open the whole time, I’m out of luck because the device itself has no built-in screen. It would be nice to have at least a small display for basic readings.Battery life is decent, but since it runs on AAA batteries instead of something rechargeable, I always have to remember to carry extras. It’s not a huge deal, but for something this high-tech, it would have been nice to have a built-in rechargeable battery. Despite these drawbacks, it’s still a really useful tool that’s made my workflow much smoother. If you work with lighting on a regular basis and need precise color and intensity readings, this is definitely worth considering—just be aware of its limitations.Overall, the meter is a really useful tool for anyone who works with lighting, whether it’s for photography, filmmaking, or theatre. That said, it’s not perfect. The app could be better, and the fact that it relies entirely on a smartphone can be frustrating if your phone dies or disconnects. A small built-in screen for basic readings would have made a big difference. Also, the AAA battery requirement isn’t a dealbreaker, but a rechargeable option would have been much more convenient.Having said that, it does its job well and can be a huge time-saver.

I have a small studio which I do some product and still like photography. All seemed to go well, using average white balance on my camera settings. However, once I got this my images improved.First it can act like a light or flash meter. Great, rather than trial and error with exposure. But the feature I like best is the correct colour balance.If I have my internal lights on in my studio, add a flash then whilst the camera will do its best to guess the correct colour temperature, it's not a match for the Datacolor Color Meter. This takes a reading from both sources and gives you the correct temperature to adjust on the Elichrome flash units. This is recorded on the app which is dead easy and free to download on to your phone.Easy to use and it's light and portable enough to carry with you. use a Bluetooth connection rather than wifi which is a great advantage.Works in real time with immediate results and, best of all it only needs two readily available batteries, which are included.You can adjust your iso, aperture and then request a flash or light meter reading. Allows you to really read the correct temperatures of the light sources. Even if it says a certain temperature, it may not be correct so you can adjust looking at the app and lose any colour cast.Its not cheap, but certainly a valuable accessory.

Strumento impagabile per misurare con precisione temperatura colore e intensità luminosa.Lo strumento arriva in una bella borsetta semirigida, con a corredo due supporti magnetici, le pile e le istruzioni. È molto compatto e ben costruito. Su di un lato c’è il tasto per l’accensione e al centro è possibile modificare la posizione del sensore per favorire la luce incidente o riflessa.L’app è la Datacolor LightColor Meter, fatta davvero bene. Connessione sempre veloce precisa ed affidabile, traduzioni impeccabili e non introduce alcun consumo di batteria anomalo.Ci sono a disposizione diverse schermate, tra cui alcune dedicate alla fotografia ed altre alla videografica. In generale le informazioni sono sempre chiare, anche se alcune schermate richiedono la comprensione profonda delle tematiche del colore.Mi è piaciuta molto tra queste quella che consente di osservare la variazione di tonalità di colore nel tempo: è molto utile quando si vanno a girare per esempio video di cerimonie in ambienti con cui non si ha familiarità e consente di rilevare qualsiasi differenza di colore tra le lampade con una semplice passeggiata. Utilissima se non si conosce bene l’impianto luci.La precisione è assoluta: conosco a fondo le luci dello studio e ho trovato corrispondenza immediata nei dati forniti dal misuratore. Inoltre la lettura è sensibilissima, basta per esempio avvicinare il palmo della mano ad una luce per poter apprezzare la seppur minima diminuzione della temperatura di colore.Non rimpiango l’assenza di un display sul dispositivo stesso (che comunque ha tre led di segnalazione) perché la connessione è immediata ma soprattutto il livello di informazioni fornito dal telefono è impressionante.Uno strumento pratico e comodo, importantissimo per i lavori con più camere in impianti luci che non conosciamo alla perfezione. Il tempo risparmiato in post-produzione ne giustifica certamente l’acquisto.
